Three of our backs were injured early in the game which broke our of- fensive power. The Bears scored in every quarter and won 31 to 6. ,, ff 2 fg The Whitehouse game was evenly matched, Watertown struck swiftly in the first quarter when Thompson took a thirty-yard pass and carried it twenty-five yards to the C0-Cqpfq'in4L. The Blue Devils were expected to run up a large score, but it proved to be a tough game for them. The Leba- non backs were kept in check by ends Wright and Thompson, who kept them hemmed in all night. Harvey played his best game of the season and stayed in the Lebanon back- field most of the time. The Blue Devils scored their only touch down in the fourth quar- ter on a fumble in the Watertown backfield The entire Watertown team played one of their best games, to hold the Blue Devils to the low score of 9 to 0. We came out victorious with every member of the squad participating. 3. ' Our next game was away from home with Lebanon. After a hard fought battle we lost. K, Carthage proved to be a strong team. At the half the score was ' V, 10 to 9 in our favor. We won the game 17 to 13, which was the '.,, first time we had ever won over Carthage in several years. c We then journeyed to Liberty winning very easily. The follow- ing night we met Auburntown, there. Our second team played 'W about fourteen minutes, scoring fifteen points. Every player played an outstanding game. We came back after the Christmas Holidays and on January 7, we traveled to Gallatin. This was an outstanding victory over 'i'i a strong team. Our guards, Hildreth, Hardin, and Corley were very strong. The Gordonsville game was rather close during the first half. Knee came through with nineteen points and we won 32 to 16. Q ,, 'fi Liberty met the Tigerettes on their own hardwood for a rc- turn game. Again we found this an easy game to win with our forwards each scoring about the same number and our guards CAPTAIN JEAN HARDIN doing their job well. Our substitutes got more experience in the Hartsville game since they played about half of the game. Every player on the squad did a good piece of work and won an overwhelming victory. The next game was at home with Mt. Julliet, one of our County rivals. We scored nine points in six minutes of the second half. This was a hard fought battle from the beginning. Walker scored thirteen points and Knee thirty. The gym too much for We were of the game. We were forwards did was packed for our next home game which was with Lebanon. Again they proved us and we lost our second game of the season with a score of 33 to 19. on the road again, this time it was Hartsville. Our substitutes played about half This was another easy victory. expecting defeat when Gordonsville came over for a return game. However, our a good job of shooting, with Walker scoring twenty points and Patton eight, and our guards played a good defensive game. We won 45 to 19. Everyone was playing to winnwhen we next met Gallatin for the second time. Each player shared honors alike in this game, winning 37 to 25. Corley played one of her best games when we won our third game with Auburntown, The next game took us to the lower end of the County. This time we found Mt. Julliet a much improved team which made it a hard fought battle from the beginning. Our forwards and guards again shared honors for outstanding playing and won 31 to 28. For the last game of the season we traveled to Carthage. It seemed to be one of the hard- est games of the season, but with the superior playing of the entire squad we won 29 to 23. After much discussion and getting ready for the tournament we drew Gallatin. We were afraid to meet them the third time, but were determined to win. We did with a score of 33 to 13. This was one of our best games of the season. Our next tournament opponent was White House in the Semi-finals. Resume' uf the Season With everyone playing an outstanding game we won over White House 37 to 13. Once again we met Lebanon in the finals and lost 33 to 14. The following week we traveled to Murfreesboro to play in the Unit Tournament, meeting a strong team from Lincoln county, Fayetteville. Everyone played an outstanding game even though we lost 37 to 23. We placed two players on the all tournament team of the ninth district namely, Knee as for- ward, also highest scorer for the district and tournament, and Corley as guard. Since we only lost two games in the regular season and two tournament games we are just- ly proud of the outstanding work of the 1948-49 Tigerettes of Watertown High School. Even though the game was exciting to the spectators we were defeated 16 to 15 The following week we met Lebanon on her own hardwood and as usual we were defeated by a score of 51 to 32 despite Captain Lannom s twenty three points On December 10 our loyal supporters traveled to Carthage to see us agaln defeated by the Owls with a score of 49 to 31 CAPTAIN RoY LANNOM Scored 243 Pomts The next four games were played away from home with the Tigers wrnnmg two and losing two One of these games was a return game with Auburntown thrs trme the story was different we won 25 to 17 Each of our boys played an outstanding game This victory seemed to renew our sprrrts for we next met the Creenwaves and won 25 to 21 Thrs was our first outstanding victory with Thompson belng the hrgh scorer The Gordonsville game will be remembered by Red Harden scorlng for the OPPOQING team immediately after enterrng the game as a substitute Again we were defeated by 30 to 24 Even though we lost to Liberty on our own hardwood the Tigers played a hard fought game with Handsome J T and Maggre sharing scoring honors The next three games were played at home before a packed gym of loyal supporters The Hartsvllle game was a pushover the Tigers wrnnrng 49 to 23 Most of the squad played ln thls game However the next game was Wlfh another county rrval Mt Juliet The Tigers played one of their best games of the season holding Marshalr to sev nteen pomts which was below hrs average per game Corkey scored 14 pornts for the Tigers The story was different when we played the return game with Mt Juliet They won by one of their best scores of the season 80 to 58 When the Blue Devrls came to Watertown they agaln de feated us 36 to 18 The Tigers were on the road again this time lt was Harts vrlle 'I'h1s game will be remembered for the outstanding fioorwork of each player Butler added to our score 4 points thus we won 42 to 28 ff 4-fm. 'wwf' ww wwe Then it was home again for the next two games. The first one being with the Greenwaves which was a thriller from the beginning to the end, with the score being tied at the half. With a few seconds left to play it looked as if the game would end, the Greenwaves being victorious. However, as the spectators were on their feet, Captain Lannom dribbled across the center, paused, shotwstripping the net--winning the game by one point. Coach Knee's Tigers certainly played a game that will ever be remembered in basketball history. Our last home game was with Auburntown, the Tigers again playing a hard fought game and winning 52-21. VVe traveled to Carthage for the last game of the season. We lost the game to a strong squad, with Thompson and Lannom sharing scoring honors for the Tigers. We had several days to rest before meeting Gallatin's Greenwaves in the Ninth District Tournament. Coach Knee and his squad were determined that the story would not be repeti- tion of the last ycar's tournament game with Gallatin. The quick thinking and experience as a good coach and the outstanding teamwork and the playing of the Tigers gave us a victory of 39 to 31. We then played Lebanon in the semi-finals. We were leading at the half by several points, but lost by two points, despite the superior play- ing of our team. Captain Lannom was placed on the all-tournament team as guard. Thus, the season closed and the school admin- istration and student body were justly proud of the 1948-49 Tigers!
