HISTUHY Ulf THE CLASS UF 1948 In the fall of 1936 a gloup of small boys and glrls fox med a lme on the rlght slde of the xx alk 1n front of Wateltoxvn Grammax School We xx ere alext and eager to see xx hat xxfts gomg to happen but lxttle d1d xxe reallze the act1v1t1es of the years that lay before us Among that group xxas Betty Bass Ma ry Stexvart Kathleen Smlth Helen Hunt Kathlyn Foutch Edsel Flovd Halbert LaFever Hugh Thomas Joseph Stalllngs and I A pleasant looklng lady appeared ln the doorxx ay and beckoned us to come ln A xxe seated ourselves 1n the small seats she lntroduced herself as MISS Maly Lltchfold We all '1pp1ec1ate the splendid guldance she gave us durmg that short yea1 The txme passed qulckly and It was the sprlng of 37 We had knoxvn many Joys ln our IIVGS before but none so great as school bemg out The tlme sped by and we found ourselves 1n the second glade Thls year seemed very brlef and so d1d all the other years of Grammar School untll we reached the elghth grade ln the year of 1944 ThlS seemed to be the most excltmg year 1n our l1ves In the sprmg of that year the only subject you xvo uld hear bemg dlscussed was our gradua tlon Our graduatlon xvas soon over and we looked forward to our first year ln hlgh school In the fall we reallzed xve xvere another group of green freshmen We felt al most as out of place as we d1d the first day ln 1936 when xve entered Mlss Mary s room That year students were added from the sur roundlng communltles of Alexandrla Shop Mr D F Adklsson was our new pI'1l'1C1pEi1 that year and although he d1d thmk xxe xvere a llttle nolsy he stlll thought xve were a '11ce group Through h1s splendld guldance our freshman year was one of our happlest Our Sophomore year was another to be remembered Of course l1ke any other group xve felt superlor to the Freshman but we soon dlscovered our mlstake Last year we found xve xvere really Jolly Junlors Mr T W Bruce xvas our nexx prlnclpal and through h1S kmdness and sple ndld leadershlp we found our Jumor year to be a very happy and successful one Also th ere was the excltement of selectlnff our class rmgs for the next year the Juruor and Sem or Receptlon and the Class Play Cash and Carrle Thls was all so new to us and then the thought m our mlnds of Next year we ll be Semors The tlme passed qulckly and the fall of 1947 was here The year we had looked for xx ard to the year we felt xx ould be one of the happiest years of our hves The Hrst great event of the year xvas the day xve recelved our class rmgs Then there was the electlon of class ofiicers and Sponsors electlon of the annual staff Jun1o1 Semor receptlon Class Basketball Tournament our class play The Atomlc Blonde and varlous other soclal actxvltles There s st1ll the same dlscusslon that xvas heard ln 1944 'Our graduatlon We express our appreclatlon to MISS Ma ry Burton and Mr Earl Baker our sopnsors Mr T W Bruce and the entlre faculty for thelr help and guxdance through these hlgh school years Whatever success xxe may ac hleve m llfe xxe oxxe the gratltude to our Alma Mater WILLETTE HL DSON 'I . 1 yf ' 1 . 1 7 Q 1 v L. M -1 1 , 4 5'-Ct . . or ll 4 -': Q zfldflfr NJ We suddenly reallzed that our dreams had come true on January 5 1948 when our Senlor Class and Sponsors left school on a chartered Trallway bus to see the Freedom Tram whlch had arrlved ln our capltal c1ty on Sunday January 4 The tr1p was a very pleasant one w1th an oc aslonal outburst of laughter from the group that had pushed the thoughts of school far lnto the background and were th1nk1ng only of the events of the day When we reached Unlon Statlon and saw the huge red whlte and blue Monster below us we qulckly made our way to the end of the l1ne to Walt our turn to pass through the tra1n There was an enormous throng of people and after four hours of pushing pulllng and standlng ln l1ne vse reached the entrance It was then that we reallzed th1s was truly the Splflf of 1776 the tram that held our back ground the thmgs that made our freedom posslble The cars of the Freedom Tram were ordlnary day coaches vnade over and carryxng 128 docu ments and flags that played an lmportant part ln our hlstory These cars were covered Vklth tvxenty tons of shatterproof steel platlng Inslde the corrldors ran 1n a zlg zag pattern so that there was alvs ays somethlng just around the corner Each document was 1n a steel case cov ered wlth bulletproof glass and the document 1tS91f vsas protected by an lnch th1ck plastlc envel ope Wh1Ch absorbed the llght thus protecting the 1nk and paper UH1tQd States Marlnes stood on guard day and nlght Hxstory became more real and more meanmgful to us as we pass d through each corrldor studylng the documents There vxas the rough copy of the Declaratlon of Independence 1n Jeffer sons own handvsrltlng the Artlcles of Confederatlon the B111 of Rlghts the log book of the USS MISSOUFI the Gettysburg Address 1n Llncolns own hand vxrmng the Magna Carta the Mayflower Compace the Hag ralsed by the Marxnes on Ivto Jlma and many other or1g1na1 docu ments As vue stepped pass the Mar1ne guard and out of the tra1n we suddenly reallzed vse had seen a short rev1ew 1n forty five mlnutes of what It took years along xuth blood svxeat heart aches and sorrovss to create Yes our her1tage calls for lmpo tant responslbllltles for every Clll zen to understand and preserve lt We slgned our names on the scroll just outslde the tram vth1ch xull be placed 1n the Con gresslonal Llbrary and turned our thoughts homexn ard and to WHS Th1S xx as the end of a per fect day for the 1948 Semors and thelr Sponsors e, , ,,A. .. MARGIE ATWOOD who is noisy, but sweet, Is still having trouble with her big feet. Then there's BERTHA MAE ROBERTS, still quite chu bby, Is staying at home praying for a hubby. JOSI-:PH STALLINGS with his well-known fiddle, Is on the Grand Ole Opry playing Hey-diddle-diddle. HUGH THOMAS with his curly hair, Now runs a s land at the Alexandria Fair. EDSFL FLOYD the Hardware King Is saving up money to buy a ring fFor Margie J And BOBBY BLANKFNSHIP the famous crooner Makes the swooners swoon sooner There was MARY STFWART with her stately air Is now marrled to a guy who has no hair KATHRYN FOUTCH Wlth her long blonde tresses Lives 1n Paris designing dresses HFSTFR LFA is still working at Kuhns Behind th e counter selling prunes ROBBIP BOBUM is often seen raking hay Since she wrecked the Chevrolet WILLETTE Hbnsox who was true to her Alma Ma ter Is now a star at the Royal Theater BETTY BASS in school was a bubble blower But now for Corky she pushes the lawn mower ETHYLI INI- Domsim. still vsaiting for her feller S lls cider from a barrel 1n her celler HELFN HLNT Sunday School teacher Is married to Rev Hall a Baptist preacher
