M -1 1 , 4 5'-Ct . . or ll 4 -': Q zfldflfr NJ We suddenly reallzed that our dreams had come true on January 5 1948 when our Senlor Class and Sponsors left school on a chartered Trallway bus to see the Freedom Tram whlch had arrlved ln our capltal c1ty on Sunday January 4 The tr1p was a very pleasant one w1th an oc aslonal outburst of laughter from the group that had pushed the thoughts of school far lnto the background and were th1nk1ng only of the events of the day When we reached Unlon Statlon and saw the huge red whlte and blue Monster below us we qulckly made our way to the end of the l1ne to Walt our turn to pass through the tra1n There was an enormous throng of people and after four hours of pushing pulllng and standlng ln l1ne vse reached the entrance It was then that we reallzed th1s was truly the Splflf of 1776 the tram that held our back ground the thmgs that made our freedom posslble The cars of the Freedom Tram were ordlnary day coaches vnade over and carryxng 128 docu ments and flags that played an lmportant part ln our hlstory These cars were covered Vklth tvxenty tons of shatterproof steel platlng Inslde the corrldors ran 1n a zlg zag pattern so that there was alvs ays somethlng just around the corner Each document was 1n a steel case cov ered wlth bulletproof glass and the document 1tS91f vsas protected by an lnch th1ck plastlc envel ope Wh1Ch absorbed the llght thus protecting the 1nk and paper UH1tQd States Marlnes stood on guard day and nlght Hxstory became more real and more meanmgful to us as we pass d through each corrldor studylng the documents There vxas the rough copy of the Declaratlon of Independence 1n Jeffer sons own handvsrltlng the Artlcles of Confederatlon the B111 of Rlghts the log book of the USS MISSOUFI the Gettysburg Address 1n Llncolns own hand vxrmng the Magna Carta the Mayflower Compace the Hag ralsed by the Marxnes on Ivto Jlma and many other or1g1na1 docu ments As vue stepped pass the Mar1ne guard and out of the tra1n we suddenly reallzed vse had seen a short rev1ew 1n forty five mlnutes of what It took years along xuth blood svxeat heart aches and sorrovss to create Yes our her1tage calls for lmpo tant responslbllltles for every Clll zen to understand and preserve lt We slgned our names on the scroll just outslde the tram vth1ch xull be placed 1n the Con gresslonal Llbrary and turned our thoughts homexn ard and to WHS Th1S xx as the end of a per fect day for the 1948 Semors and thelr Sponsors e, , ,,A. ..
