This was the ominous threat facing the fourteen frantic mem- bers of the Arrow staff as they rushed to meet their March I5 deadline. And their hard worlc paid off as they completed this year's Arrow-one of the largest yearbooks in WHS history-ahead of schedule. On March IZ. the last piece of copy was typed, the last picture was printed. and the last page plan was drawn. This was the climax of the worlc that began last September, when the staff was chosen and every member was assigned a specific iolo. Each section was under the supervision of a section editor and an assistant. Audrey Johnson. co-editor, directed the section editors, while Bruce Burghardt, co- editor, handled the sports phase of school life. lt may sound highly organized, but . . . aslc any staffer . . . the keynote for success was cooperation instead. The months of tension. work. and worry are now forgotten . . . but the results will always be seen in the finished product-the l958 Arrow. 46 . If V 5 1 , 77 4, ZS .? They are pictured on the preceding two pages, g ' A distant drumbeatg the pomp and pageantry ot presenting the newly elected princess and chiettaing the gay testivity ot tloats, parades and pep, all combined to make a wondertul Ki-Yi Day, the memories ot our never-to-be-torgotten high school days which we shall tuclc into our minds. The day's events began at 6:30 when Miss Bruhn's sleepyeeyed art students painted the street in tront ot the high school with colortul de- signs. The highlight ot the day came when Masque and Thespians presented the annual Ki-Yi Legend. and Gretchen Langenteld and Larry Lundeen were chosen as this years Princess and Chiettaun. Following the . . . . . H I i presentation, the royalty led the 33-unit homecoming parade. The Arrows loss to the Mutche Kernes tem porarily dampened enthusiasm, but spirits were again litted at the annual homecoming dance to put the tinal touch to that wonderful day. This was the ominous threat tacing the tourteen trantic mem- bers ot the Arrow statt as they rushed to meet their March I5 deadline. And their hard work paid ott as they completed this year's Arrow-one ot the largest yearbooks in WHS history-ahead ot schedule. On March IZ, the last piece ot copy was typed, the last picture was printed, and the last page plan was drawn. This was the climax ot the work that began last September, when the statt was chosen and every member was assigned a specitic job. Ready and willing to lead WHS sports fans in the familiar cheers at games and pep meetings are the seven cheerleaders This year's squad consists of three seniors: ABOVE: Mary Jane Meadows, Judi Valentine, and Gretchen Langenfeld, The four jun- iors are LEFT: Meryl Gay Fortin, Monica Mitchell, and RIGHT: Jane Ellwein and Virginia Langenfeld. Last year a new system of choosing the cheering squad was used The cheerleaders were voted upon by the student body at an assembly where tryouts were held, Instead of having the usual five cheer- leaders and four songleaders, the two squads were combined. Almost every Friday these peppy could be seen piling into Elwin Duke Grow's car to take off for an out-of-town game. Signs seen in the halls before most games were just one of cheerleaders made by the cheerleaders. This was their jobs which helped to create school spirit in WHS. No pep meeting, football or basketball game would be complete without the aid of the cheering squad. BELOW: Ardent WHS students gather in front of the school for a pep meeting right before the team leaves for the sectional tournament at Webster.
