gg The Purple and Gold, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Dorothy Fosness and the four co-editors, Patty Ellwein, Audrey Johnson, Wanda Tesch, and Mary Mar- quardt, shown above, has completed another creditable year of journalism. Some of the outstanding sections of the publication were sports features, news coverage, and interviews. As a result of the excellent news cov- erage around Watertown High School, the Purple and Gold received excellent ratings from the South Dakota High School Press Association. In addition to the state award from the SDHSPA of first class, the publication was also ,rf It 5. I awarded first class ratings from the Na- tional Scholastic Press, and the Inter- national Quill and Scroll. A new feature of the paper this year has been a bigger number of artistic illustrations and a cartoon. Another im- provement for this year's Purple and Gold was the wide picture coverage given throughout the year. Members of the staff met each Monday afternoon with night sessions held be- fore each publication deadline. Our school is governed democratically, fol- lowing the example of our national govern- ment, by a Student Council. A representative is elected from each ad- visory at the beginning of the year. One of the honors of the school year is to be a delegate chosen by the faculty each spring to represent W.H.S. at Girls' State and Boys' State. Girls are sent to Dakota Wes- leyan University at Mitchell and the boys to Northern State Teachers College at Aber- deen. As staters these students learn about the government and have a chance to practice democratic principles. This year Dixie Collins was elected governor of Girls' State.
