KI-YI DAY Cold noses and damp feet, the we:1ther's Ki-Yi Day presents, didn't dampen Ki-Yi spirit. Days before, clubs and classes planned and constructed Boats. On Ki-Yi Eve, crews of students painted downtown streets with slogans that depicted vio- lent death for the Brookings Bobcats. Princess Janice Frandsen and Chieftain Dick Middleton, presented in the Legend, answered the thirty-one-year-old question, Who's the Princess and Chieftain? Janice and Dick were presented in the annual Ki-Yi parade, which featured many floats, all predicting a victory for the Arrows. The Cats, however, came from behind in the third quarter and stole the homecoming victory. Chieftain and Princess were presented in the Legend. Adding spark to the parade was the senior band. In The juniors work at Bowing the Cats. Junior girls paint the town. Art class letters the tree in front of the school. The semor and Spamsh floats follow the royalty. QP- ' es -, ,fsli..s '-N.. Patty Ellwein, Kathy Bierne Caroll Swenson, Beverly Grapentine Jim Grant, Phil Wulif Herb Teske gg The Purple and Gold, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Dorothy Fosness and the four co-editors, Patty Ellwein, Audrey Johnson, Wanda Tesch, and Mary Mar- quardt, shown above, has completed another creditable year of journalism. Some of the outstanding sections of the publication were sports features, news coverage, and interviews. As a result of the excellent news cov- erage around Watertown High School, the Purple and Gold received excellent ratings from the South Dakota High School Press Association. In addition to the state award from the SDHSPA of first class, the publication was also ,rf It 5. I awarded first class ratings from the Na- tional Scholastic Press, and the Inter- national Quill and Scroll. A new feature of the paper this year has been a bigger number of artistic illustrations and a cartoon. Another im- provement for this year's Purple and Gold was the wide picture coverage given throughout the year. Members of the staff met each Monday afternoon with night sessions held be- fore each publication deadline. Much of the writing for the publication was ac- complished by a large group of sopho- more students in Mrs. Fosness' English classes. STANDING: M. Zimprich, Z. Thompson, C. Kutz, M. Pulscher, J. The group encourages a spirit of fellowship and confers upon deserving can- didates a worthy badge of distinction. Students become members by earning points and participating in interscholastic speech com- petition and by speaking before civic organiza- tions in the community. Upon earning twenty points a student becomes a member of N.F.L. W.H.S. had twenty-two members initiated dur- ing the school year. Initiation for these mem- bers was held in February. Total membership in N.F.L. is now forty. After a student becomes a member he may earn advanced degrees by earning additional points. He is granted the degree of honor, the degree of excellence, and the degree of distinction after earning fifty, one hundred, and two hundred points respectively. Each year the N.F.L. members elect eight stu- dents to participate in the Student Congress. The Projectors' Club is advised by Mr. Hertz. Taking, developing, and enlarging pictures are among the many technical tasks that the students who are members of Camera Club learn in the way of photography. Their big projects each year are processing most of the pictures for the Arrow and the Purple and Gold. Mr. Pederson is this year's Camera Club instruc- tor. BAND The high school band is one of the busiest and most enjoyable organizations in W.H.S. Under the direction of Armond Pappy Pappone, this year's 61 piece band practiced an hour every morning and willingly gave hours of their time to add color at football and basketball games, pep meetings, concerts, and convocations. School started a month early for the band members, for when August rolled around, the band Worked diligently practicing march- ing maneuvers to catchy strains of Band Jive. The band marched in the Dakota Day parade at Vermillion this year, in addition to the Ki-Yi and other local parades. The band constantly strived to perfect their music, be it jazz, classical, or popular, and to entertain their listeners. ARROWS HAVE DISMAL YEAR new coach Gene Cheever when the future Arrows reported for practice. The Arrows were issued uniforms August 23. They then started a grueling schedule of two practices daily for two weeks until school started. The season opened with the Arrows travel- ing to Worthington, Minnesota, for a non- conference game. Watertown came from be- hind in the third quarter to win, 7-6. After fighting a hard non-conference game with powerful Sioux City East, the Arrows came out on the short end of a 39-6 score. This was the Lake City boys' first home game. The following Friday the Arrows traveled to Mitchell for their first E.S.D. conference OPPOSITE PAGE, TOP: Ed Heathcote brings down Sioux City East player from behind. Ki-Yi day was shattered by the Bobcats' second half comeback. Watertown led at half- time 6-0, but was unable to stop Brookings until they had amassed a 25-6 lead at the close of the second half. Watertown was again plagued by a second period letdown when they met Madison. Leading midway through the game 13-6, the Arrows fell into a slump to lose, 26-13. Next the Arrows played an afternoon game with the Huron Tigers on their home- coming. After playing hard and tough in the first half, Watertown dropped behind to lose, 26-13. The Purple and Gold stayed with the pow- erful Golden Eagles of Aberdeen for two and one-half quarters, but after putting up a brilliant fight, fell back and lost, 33-14. Hoping for an upset, the Arrows traveled to Yankton for their final game of the sea- son. The E.S.D. championship Bucks pulled away from a 7-7 score in the fourth quarter to win, 20-7. ARROWS SIXTH IN ESD Two non-conference wins opened the Arrows' 1954-55 season. They defeated Mil- bank 46-45, and then overpowered Webster 62-49. Huron visited the Arrows and defeated them in their first conference game 57-54 after a last minute rally by the Arrows failed. The following Friday the Mitchell Kernels defeated Watertown 53-46 in the Corn Palace. The WHS five showed a lot of hustle as they downed Madison 56-49 for their first conference win, but were overpowered by the host, Sioux Falls, 43-39, only after they had cracked the strong Arrow defense. During Christmas vacation, the Arrows journeyed to the Black Hills with Washing- ton High of Sioux Falls to play Lead and Belle Fourche. The Arrows lost to Belle Fourche 59-53 the first night and were de- feated by Lead 60-45 the final evening. Following the holidays the Arrows had three games away, losing two and winning one. They lost to Yankton 58-50 and to Huron 51-47, but came back to knock Aberdeen out of the conference leadership with a 47-39 win. The Madison Bulldogs made it even for the season by defeating Watertown 75-51. Next the Sioux Falls quintet squeezed by the host Arrow team 61-57. At the height of a blizzard, Brookings de- feated the Arrows 67-51 in the State College Field House. In the final two conference games, the Arrows defeated the Yankton Bucks 76-55, but lost on their home court to Aberdeen 67- 63 despite a last quarter rally. The Watertown Arrows finished their con- ference play with 4 wins and 10 losses.
