Student Senate I, Gaveliers I, Girls' and Boys' State A government by the school, for the school, and ot the school -this was our student gov- ernment-Senate and Gaveliers. Problems, some important and some not, were discussed again and again and usually solved. A chance to practice correct parliamentary procedure and student cooperation was given to the representatives of the Student Senate and the Gavelier members, the homeroom presidents. But a bigger and more exciting chance awaited the lucky students chosen to attend Hawkeye Girls' and Boys' State - a program designed to give high school students an inside look at their state's and country's gov- ernments. Contest Play This year's contest play, Alice-Sit-by-the-Fire, written by the author of Alice in Wonderland, concerned a mother's efforts to attain a closer relationship with her three children after being separated from them for several years. With an English setting and fine portrayal of characters, the play advanced to the district meet at Tama. Fall Play A touch of make believe-a modern fairy tale - Mrs. McThing was another fine produc- tion from the speech students and Miss Ruth Wilson. A story of o witch's influence on an aristocratic family and the gang from the other side of the tracks made a humorous and delightfui presentation. CONTEST PLAY W. Schwyhart, S. Cooper, M. Greene, J. Slaughter, J. Schmidt, S. Blindman, J. Silver. Entertaining the Kiwanis Club, singing in the Christmas program and the Evening of Music, appearing on television, and joining with the East High Chorus in the Music Festival will always be pleasant memories tor these students. Especially different this year was the formation of barbershop quartets --- tor girls as well as boys. The fine performance, the cooperation, and the willingness to give of outside t'me, all helped to make this year's vocal group West High's best. CHORUS A Row T: Mrs. Tressler lstudent teachert, K. And so it was for the Evening of Music, the two per- formances of the Christmas program, the Music Festival, and other occasions. Class time and outside hours were devoted by these musicians to perfect the selections chosen for concerts. As in post years, West had a group of talented individuals combining their efforts to form an orchestra of superior quality. Silver Strings Formals, tuxedos, and a beautiful blend of music -this was our Silver Strings. With stu- dents from West Junior as well as West High, this fine musical group entertained at ban- quets, the fall play, and assembly programs at West High and West Junior. The quality and superb performances were always enioyed and will be remembered. ANNUAL STAFF ANNUAL STAFF Standing: S. Hanuske Ciunior picture ediforl, M. Casberg C, Main fphotographerl, J. Somehow West wouIdn't be the same without its news- paper to keep the students informed and entertained. By working together and giving up many hours of outside time, the staff produced a publication that served not only the students but also acted as a public relations medium to acquaint the community with the school and its activi- ties. Tanner Varsity Cheerleaders West High has always had a great deol of pride in its athletic program. An es- sential and very pleasing part of this program was our varsity cheerleading group. Just as the athletes strived to win contests and break records, these girls contributed their part by keeping up the spirit and desire to win. Whether it was at the pep assemblies, football and basketball games, or wres- tling meets, we could depend on our cheerleaders - win or lose. YY Sophomore Cheerleaders Another year-another brand new group of soph cheerleaders. By cheering for sophomore basketball games and re- serve wrestling meets, these girls ac- quired the necessary experience and ability that will carry them through until their last cheer as seniors. Chosen from many hopeful girls, these lucky four have shown themselves to be very worthy of their honor. VARSITY CHEERlEADERS Row l: S, Chapman, J, Young, L. Barger, B. Bill- ington Row 2: J. Hubbard Bible Club To learn more about faith and to provide a social life for the student with a more restricted religion were two objec- tives ot this important organization. These students planned their programs so they could understand and interpret the Bible more fully. This truly was one of West's finest or- ganizations. Y-teens Twice a month Thursday nights were reserved at the YWCA for this group. In addition to their regular business meet- ings, skits and programs were presented by these girls. Discussions from hair styling to gift wrapping and helping a needy family made this club lots ot fun and worthwhile, too. Hi-Y Listening to a refugee tell of his escape - seeing one ot the nation's largest gun collections -hearing all about hypno- tism. These were the Hi-Y highlights this past year. These people, mostly upper- classmen, spent many hours of their extra time to help direct and assist the public. Whether for athletic events, plays, open houses, or the Variety Show, this group could always be depended upon for their greatly appreciated help. They contributed a lot to what we call Wahawk spirit. ll USHERS Stargazers Seeing stars? Yes indeed! Many clear, beautiful nights were spent at the tele- scope by this starry-eyed, star-minded group. interesting programs, trips to the museum, and monthly astronomical re- ports-this was the work of the star- gazers -work and fun. G.R.A. Girls' Recreational Association it is, but lots of hard work, too! Most of the real work was done at the students' homes where they met to discuss the mechanics of the radio and other electrical appliances. These, too, are the mighty Wahawks. They had to be -- big bundles of towels aren't exactly light! The Wahawks completed an undefeated, untied season as they won ten straight meets, the Big 6 Conference title, the District tournament, and the state title by a score of 69-43 over East Waterloo. Six Wahawk wrestlers qualified for the state meet, and West came home with three state championships and three runners-up. State runners-up were Fran Augustson at 95 pounds, John Perry at 127 pounds, and Jim Bast at 133 pounds. Co-captain Lowell Stewart won the state championship at the 103-pound class, three-year letterman Frank Lane won the championship at 112 pounds, and co- captain Tom Huff became a three-time state champion when he pinned his man in the finals of the 120-pound division. Huff's pre- vious two titles were won at 95 pounds and 112 pounds respectively. These memories will be precious to us not only because of the big events but because of the wonderful experience it is to be a part of the spirit and student body of West. This spirit, though it is indescribable and intangible, is felt within each one of us. The things most appreciated are those that are past, as the senior class, we may have called this our year, but without the underclassmen this could not have been so. Now, underclassmen, you have your chance to take advantage of the opportunities to make next year -your big year. 9 W J K' iff C69 I' C6 cliff' I .balm Ill!! .Janie 'Mc Mffuqg a:r'rd72l'J Xss- y - J l I A . . sr I y 5 DQ J L. iff ?
