The Debate Club, organized for the first time this year, has integrated the work of the regular debate and the after school debate groups. The club met on Wed- nesday evenings and each week debates were held among members. Open forums followed all meetings. In November the club attended the debate between Northwestern University and Iowa State Teachers Col- lege. In December they entertained the varsity team of Iowa State Teachers, who presented a guest pro- gram. The East High squad joined the West Club for one spirited evening of practice debates. The National Forensic League of which West Wa- terloo is a member has grown from an organization of 6 to 29 members this season. Patty Paul is the local president and Phyllis Young secretary. Nineteen members hold advanced degrees de- termined by points of participation in competitive and community speech programs. With sixty points the following students hold the degree of merit: Mary Ellen Page Dick Poyner Herbert Bagenstos George Friedl Bill Huntington Bill Cillilland John Voss Susan West Milton Creenstein Bill Kuhl Bob Miller The degree of excellence for 100 points is held by: Phyllis Young Henry Cutler Nancy Butts Donna Bartley Homer Nielson The highest degree of distinction for a minimum of 150 points belongs to Patty Paul, Herman Robin, and the chapter sponsor, Miss Walsh. The official publication of the N.F.l..., The Ros- sponsored a tournament on January 17 in which 43 teams from Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin partici- pated. The West chapter also submitted the largest single number of applications of any chapter in the lfnited States this season. The spring training pro- gram in Forensics for fifty-five seventh and eighth graders was under the direction of this group. Radio speaking was motivated by the frequent performances of our speakers in school broadcasts on commercial radio. In the state finals at Iowa City. Herbert Bagenstos was given the highest rating for any of the participating speakers. The extempore speaking candidates were given opportunity for public performance when they ad- dressed the Contemporary Affairs Club on topics of current interest. Bill Webb was W'est's representative and placed third in his bracket at Iowa City. Interpretation was given special stress through Advanced Speech Class and after school groups. Representatives were selected from all English Classes in school. From a group of forty, the three state repre- sentatives were selected. Mary Ellen Page and Susan West received the highest ranking given at the Iowa City finals. The original oration was chosen from those of a class of thirty-five. Homer Nielson with his original oration, Trustees of Posterityf' was named Iowa's 1943 State Champion Orator and was awarded the four year scholarship to the University of Iowa. The fact that community service groups all over Waterloo call on this department for speakers shows that speech is made functional in the life of the stu- dents for it makes them better able to serve their community when they have acquired skill in the use trum, had a special story on the West chapter, which of the spoken word.
