FO REWORD Saw Progress bloom upon the Prairies Like some bright flower of the Southland, Beheld the Red Man and the bison Driven on toward Western waters, But counted greater than these wonders, Greater than the teeming cities, Tall stone teepees made for learning Set profusely, that the tribesmen There might send their Youths and Maidens, There to walk in ways of wisdom, There to study with the wise ones That they might sometime lead their people, Be future chieftains of the nation- As quickly then the Vision faded, Vanished in the evening shadows, Melted as the mists of morning, Yet brightly shone in Black Hawk's memory As the silver star of evening That hung above the Whispering treetops, That danced 'til dawn upon the waters- Turn these pages then, O Reader, Find the Dream herein recorded, Read the tale of Youth's Achievement Earned by triumphs and by failures, Read ol artists and musicians, Read of sportsmen and skilled craftsmen, Read of those who gather daily By the shining Flame of Knowledge ln the great stone teepee made for learning, Set in splendor near the Cedar ln a thriving prairie city, In a Land of Peace and Plenty. -Alen e Dunlap

FOREWORD Many moons have passed, O Reader, Moons of glory and of splendor, Moons of chaos and disaster, Unremembered by the living, Now forgotten, save in legend. Many months and many seasons Countless as the leaves of Autumn, Myriad, as the stars of midnight, Have made their way across the meadows, Lingered near the fertile corntields, Wandered through the virgin forests, Since Black Hawk, leader of his people, Mighty Chieftain of the Prairies, Rested from his day of hunting, Sat before his ornate Wigwam, Pondered while he puffed the peacepipe, Dreamed and drowsed and saw the smoke Curl and twist in slow gyrations Upward 'til the fires of sunset Seemed to smoulder in the heavens! Long he gazed in meditation At the gold and purple splendor, Thinking of the Past and Present, Wondering where the Red Man's Future, Musing on the Great Hereafter, When suddenly there rose before him, Vaguely veiled in dusk and twilight, The Vision of a vast Tomorrow- Marveling, Black Hawk saw the Cedar Spanned by stone and steel-made bridges, Saw the smoke of many chimneys Mar the beauty of the heavens, plumes

DEDICATIO MRS. MAUDE PALMER There was one Within the teepee Who taught the children of the tribesmen Many things about their language, One Whose efforts and endeavors, Seiflessness and constant striving, Inspired the scholars of the teepee, One to Whom, in recognition, This book is dedicated.
