Many months and many seasons Countless as the leaves of Autumn, Myriad, as the stars of midnight, Have made their way across the meadows, Lingered near the fertile corntields, Wandered through the virgin forests, Since Black Hawk, leader of his people, Mighty Chieftain of the Prairies, Rested from his day of hunting, Sat before his ornate Wigwam, Pondered while he puffed the peacepipe, Dreamed and drowsed and saw the smoke Curl and twist in slow gyrations Upward 'til the fires of sunset Seemed to smoulder in the heavens! Long he gazed in meditation At the gold and purple splendor, Thinking of the Past and Present, Wondering where the Red Man's Future, Musing on the Great Hereafter, When suddenly there rose before him, Vaguely veiled in dusk and twilight, The Vision of a vast Tomorrow- Marveling, Black Hawk saw the Cedar Spanned by stone and steel-made bridges, Saw the smoke of many chimneys Mar the beauty of the heavens, plumes FO REWORD Saw Progress bloom upon the Prairies Like some bright flower of the Southland, Beheld the Red Man and the bison Driven on toward Western waters, But counted greater than these wonders, Greater than the teeming cities, Tall stone teepees made for learning Set profusely, that the tribesmen There might send their Youths and Maidens, There to walk in ways of wisdom, There to study with the wise ones That they might sometime lead their people, Be future chieftains of the nation- As quickly then the Vision faded, Vanished in the evening shadows, Melted as the mists of morning, Yet brightly shone in Black Hawk's memory As the silver star of evening That hung above the Whispering treetops, That danced 'til dawn upon the waters- Turn these pages then, O Reader, Find the Dream herein recorded, Read the tale of Youth's Achievement Earned by triumphs and by failures, Read ol artists and musicians, Read of sportsmen and skilled craftsmen, Read of those who gather daily By the shining Flame of Knowledge ln the great stone teepee made for learning, Set in splendor near the Cedar ln a thriving prairie city, In a Land of Peace and Plenty. -Alen e Dunlap DEDICATIO MRS. This year the students of our school partici- pated in the State Finals in each of these events. Chief among these activities is debate, With the introduction of a new course in argumenta- tion and public discussion, West High resumed interscholastic debate competition. During the season, as many as twenty-five students participated in approximately two hundred debates. The season began with an invitational debate clinic sponsored by West High to which sixteen schools responded. Following this clinic, various teams participated in the following tournaments: Teachers' College High Invitational Clinic, Fort Dodge, Elkader, Luther College, Brindley Tournament at Teachers' College, the Big Four sponsored by East High of Waterloo, Coe College, Drake Uni- versity, and culminating in the Iowa State tournament under the auspices of the University of Iowa. West High placed fourth in the state meet. In these various events, the debaters competed with teams from Nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota. Comprising the varsity debate squad and participating in most of these events were Roy Pickett, Avis Camp, and Paul Mongerson, affirmative, and Edward Kemp and lack Kough, negative. Of the fortyesix students who wrote original orations, eight competed in the school elimination contest. Bill Birenbaum placed first, thus gaining the right to compete in subsequent contests. Bette Gibson won second place. Bill Birenbaum came through the district finals at Oelwein, deliv- ered his oration at Iowa City and received fifth place among the thirteen speakers. Another new competitive activity was extemporaneous speaking. Eight people competed in the school contest in which Ralph Teske placed first and Peter Seip, second. After winning an unanimous decision at Oelwein, Ralph Teske represented West High at the State Finals on March 30 and placed fifth. This speech was broadcast. Those who were to participate in the Interpretive Reading division of the State Festival were chosen from a group of approximately thirty interested students. In the final school contest, Peter Seip, Dorothy Simonsen, Gerry Garner, Bette Gbison, and Leona Weiss won places. They repre- sented West High at the State Festival in Iowa City on April l. Peter Seip received a superior rating and appeared in a special recital. West High has made application for a chapter in the National Forensic League, an honorary society for speech students. Those who belong to the society are awarded keys for meritorious work. WAHAWK Q 70 Ralph Teske .. . The greatest service our educational institutions can render to our democ- racy is to train students to do their share in meeting the problems of the day. Research, thinking, and speech are the instruments of this training. ln recog- nition of those students who have thus equipped themselves, the National Forensic League was formed. ' The National Forensic League is restricted to five hundred chapters located in forty different states. Membership in a chapter comes through participation in debate, original oratory, and extempore. The N. F. l... confers four degrees depending upon the extent of a student's activity in speechg they are: merit, honor, excellence, and distinction. A students degree is signified by the jewel on his key. Similarly, education is not confined to the pages of textbooks nor the lectures of teachers. Rather, it includes a broadening process apart from the regular classroom work. We may call this process education by association, for it involves cooperating with others in such a way as to derive the greatest benefit for all concerned. Modern society is vitally dependent upon this phase of human relationship-upon consideration and sacrifice for others. West l-ligh has provided every facility for the founding and operation of extra-curricular activities. Virtually every field is represented by some sort of organization. ln all these organizations, which are open to everyone, students are shown how to work with others, how to secure pleasure and enjoyment, and, at the same time, to refrain from interfering with the activities of others. Extra-curricular activities not only afford a new field to students-they are mal:- ing a valuable contribution to American culture. ln conjunction, l wish to take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude for the fine cooperation and assistance afforded by the members of the staff, the faculty, and the student body in general. To them should go largely the credit for whatever success has been achieved in the i939 Wahawk. RALPH TESKE, Editor-in-chief. WAHAWK 72 li -184 WL -s , 1' 'Ye .Ev ' nr' A '21 . BOB PENALUNA As a fitting climax to two years of outstanding performance on both offense and defense, Bob Penaluna, 207 pound tackle, was awarded a first string berth on the l. D. P. A. all-state grid team. The spearhead of West High's line, Penaluna could also be de- pended upon for yardage on his ball carrying attempts from his tackle post. CLARENCE KNOX As a carry-over from his l937-38 All-State recognition, Clarence Knox, Old Rose grid star, repeated the honor by gaining a place on lack North's Des Moines Register mythical squad. The Wa- hawks scored llO points to their opponents' 77 in compiling this record. The Old Rose gridders pounded out 92 first downs to 56 for the opposition, and piled up 1,926 gross yards to the foes' l,292 total yards in finishing out the season. West was led throughout the season by its All-State, duo, Clarence Knox and Bob Penaluna, with Dick Brecunier, ace half-back, coming in for his share of the honors. Knox, a 200-pound line bomber kicked, passed, and ran with the ball, as Well as playing his regular tackle post. He gained 417 yards during the season, averaging 6.3 yards per thrust. Brecunier, versatile senior, bore the passing burden on the squad, while turning in fine running and line backing performances. On both offense and defense, Penaluna, massive guard, was the backbone of the Old Rose line. After dropping its first two games of the year, the Wahawks surged back to take five out of the last six tilts, with only a tie with Mason City blemishing their late season record. The climax of the entire year was reached in the final contest when West staged a stubborn last half rally to nose out East Waterloo l4-13. Surviving a lengthy mid-year slump, West High Cagers hit a winning stride late in the season to wind up the regular cage schedule with ten wins and seven reverses. The Old Rose tive hit a snag in the form of Teachers' High of Cedar Falls in the sectional tourney, however, and was nosed out 20-l8, to conclude the basketball season. During the entire year the squad was beset with injuries which severely hampered the top men on the team. At various intervals during the season George Heintz, Ed Fecht, and Daryl Annis were on the ailing list, with smaller injuries cropping up among the other squad members. ln the individual field, most of the honors were captured by Ed Fecht, senior forward, though the points scored were evenly divided among the players. Fecht scored a total of 97 points in eighteen games to hold a 20 point margin over his nearest mate, lim McCombs, who counted 77 points. McCombs, however, had the best percentage on his shots from the field, netting 302 of them to lead this department. lack Darland, junior center, made GSW: of his charity tosses to have the best percentage in that field. Much of the early season success of the West quintet must be credited to Dick Brecunier, all- state guard, who graduated mid-year. Brecunier was the only letterman back at the beginning oi the season, and contributed much to the team's steadiness. The letter winners were-Dick Brecunier, Ed Fecht, Iim McCombs, lack Darland, Warren Zilrner, George I-leintz, Bob Miller, and Wendell Hayward. Powerful opponents, illness, and mid-year graduation all proved to be costly stumbling blocks in the path of West High's wrestling team during the 1938-39 season. Nevertheless, the grapplers raced through their heavy ten meet schedule with only three losses to blemish their record. Three major tournament crowns were also captured by Coach Finn B. Eriksen's mat squad during the year. Starting the season with few veterans back, the Old Rose came through with victories over West Des Moines, Cresco, Grinnell, Dubuque, lowa Falls, East Waterloo, and Mason City, all state ranking squads, while dropping close matches to Osage, Fort Dodge, and New Hampton. lllness and injuries cropped out constantly during the season, putting several of Eriksen's key men out for major portions of the schedule. The squad was hardest hit before the important Fort Dodge battle, when four regulars were unable to see action because of illness. Counting 58 points, West won its first meet trophy at the Quadrangular tourney as New Hamp- ton trailed with 35 points, followed by East Waterloo with 33, and Cresco with 15. It was the second consecutive year that the Old Rose wrestlers had taken the tournament. The initial Mississippi Valley conference wrestling title was snatched up by the Vllahawks. West scored 36 points, East Waterloo 32, Davenport 22, Dubuque 14, and Clinton 7. After placing second in the annual Big Four meet, Eriksen's men won the District tourney, plac- ing eight grapplers in the state finals. West captured the District team trophy by a comfortable margin, outscoring its nearest foe, East Waterloo, 44 to 23. lack Wilcox, dependable ll5-pound ace, battled his way to an individual crown in the State meet, to lead West to a seventh place spot in the team standings. Herb Hauser, 155-pounder, lost a grueling match to McManus, Cherokee, in the finals of his division, but came back to take a third place medal. Captain Charles Uban, 145-pound scrapper, led his mates to four individual titles in the annual Vtlaterloo Y tournament, as he showed the way by capturing his class championship. lim Stoyanoff, 75-pounds: Roy Pickett, 115-pounds, and George Appleby, 165-pounds, were the other Old Rose victors. Lee McCombs, 125-pounder, and Frank Penn, heavyweight, took second place honors in the respective weight classes. Fred Christen, undefeated 95-pound firebrand, and Doug Wilcox, four-letter man in the 105- pound class, left gaping holes in the West squad by their mid-year graduation. The ranks will be further depleted by the lune graduates. Captain Charles Uban, 145, Bob Penaluna, heavy, Lee McCombs, 1255 George Appleby, 165, and Herbert Hauser, 155, representing the heavier weight divisions, will all be lost. ln the four year span wrestling has been a major sport at West, Eriksen's squads have rung up 30 victories, dropping 10 dual meets, and tied one. Highlighting this fine record have been the Wahawk's three consecutive wins over East Waterloo. The only time the Trojans have won was in Coach Finn Eriksen's first year at West High.
