Groundwork For Success “The 1987 football season was one of change, and although the record may not indicate it, one of many successes. With three new coaches and few returning starters, the season was an uphill struggle all the way. The boys that finished out the season showed great determination and gained the respect of every team, coach, fan and especially me. We had many individual honors and outstanding senior leadership, which I believe laid the groundwork for a very successful future for Waterloo football.” Coach Bottrell The Panthers launch an attack. 34 N : The boldest of the Waterloo Panthers. BY TOM OYSTER Even as I write this column, the graduating seniors of 1988 have eleven and a half shorts days of their high school careers left. I am sure that if asked, any senior would say that he or she is glad that graduation is coming up soon. However, I would bet (if I was a betting person) that each of these seniors also has some reservations about leaving. Looking into the future is a scary thing. No one can predict if he is going to be a success or a failure. Most seniors have plans for the future or at least an idea of what they want their lives to be in ten years. Some have set goals to achieve in college or in careers. But as Robert Burns once wrote, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.” (To a Mouse). It is not a reassuring thought, but it is true. Leaving high school also means leaving a way of life of which you have become very fond of and leaving people with whom you have become very familiar. Every senior has friends, favorite classes, and favorite staff members that will be hard to part with. Many seniors are or were active in sports and activities that brought them a lot of satisfaction and a lot of pride. Sure, there have been some trying, crazy, hectic times, but there have also been a lot of good times. It is those times that will be remembered in forty years. Fun times with friends, special relationships with teachers, and positive experiences will overshadow petty arguments, bad grades, or let downs that come along with being a teenager. Every student believes that his or her class is special. I’m no exception. As I think about graduation and our class, I see many faces flash in front of my eyes. Each one of those sixteen people has certain qualities that I admire and that are unique. Tammy, Page, Carrie, Kelli, Peggy, Hanne, Rachael, Bret, Heli, Bryce, Marie, Crystal, Amy, Jeff, Shawn, and Ann, I would like to say that each of you are special people, and I am proud to be graduating as a part of your class. There were many different types of art displayed: collage’s, water colors, drawings, pointillism, paintings, print, and calligraphy. Commitment To Excellence This year’s Student Council has raised money for the school and our school spirit really shined this year. The Student Council members run the concession stand at the home sports events. They are scheduled very carefully; however, as nearly every member is in a sport. The Student Council sponsored the Homecoming Dance. All members took time out of their schedule to help decorate the gym and make the night enchanting. The Council also held a talent show for the community. All members hope that this continues to be something successful. A YEAR OF SUCCESS Awesome, one of the greatest, is our name. Both wins and losses, that belongs to life. Sometimes it feels, feels like a fragile frame, Tomorrow it may be over, stabbed with a knife. Still we must target all about the past. 1 know we have to, and I know we will. Through all the explosions we surely will last. We manage, we get to the top of the hill. In our hands, holding success, holding the key, Deep, deep in our hearts, we beg and we pray. Through the shiny glassball; the victory we see. The gods are on our side; quietly, they say. The fasting, the craving, the painful hunger, Those who have never cut weight should try it. Rich, fattening foods, one can eat no longer. Practicing each day makes him go insane. Body aching, he begins to regret; To keep going he thinks, no pain, no gain. All the running, the work, the pain, the sweat. The days go by; his energy is worn; Litle tasks become tremendous jobs.
