Cheers to Student Council! The Student Council is dedicated to the purpose of boosting school spirit by taking care of school property. 1986-87 Student Council officers: Jeff Thompson, President; Jeff Schindler, Vice President; Neil Feld-hacker, Secretary-Treasurer. Student Council sponsored the Homecoming dance. Members worked diligently during the day transforming the gym into an enchanting dance floor. It was a fun-filled evening for all students. Student Council members operate the concession stand for all home games. Since many of the council members are active in sports, workers must be scheduled carefully. This is a big demand on their time, and Council members are to be applauded for their willingness to give precious free time. The Council would like to purchase a video camera or weight equipment for the school. Student Council also sponsors an annual talent show presented for the entire community. Members are attempting to build this show each year into a bigger an better production with more students involved. JOURNALISM The people who are responsible for Panther Zone ’87 that’s in your hands have been preparing all year for this premier. In the beginning of the year, some of the yearbook staff attended a seminar at the Holi-dome. The staff learned how to develop layouts and create exciting covers. A lot of learning and complaining went on throughout the year, but the yearbook was completed. Good job staff! Another special part of the journalism crew is the newspaper staff. They have made “Panther Paws” a huge success and have made every deadline. The journalism crew attended conference at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. Each of them attended seminars including writing sports articles, features, editorials and news articles. Yearbook staff top (L-R): Marcy Embrey, Barb Longbrake. Chris Moore. Escape to Success A last minute “chat.” Jeff Schindler; Jeff qualified for state his sophomore year; however, an injury this year at districts hindered him from competing. The injury haulted his march to state but we are confident for his senior year. Jeff’s record is 24 and 5. Glen Shepherd; good job, Glen. We’re proud of you! Glen wrestled all throughout high school and finished with a record of 17 and 18. Glen qualified for state this year. Mike Copeland; Mike should be noted for putting up with his knee. He was put up a few weeks but did a nice job finishing out his season with a record of 16 and 3. Mike made it to state his sophomore year. We wish him good luck his senior year! Shawn Ruppert; Shawn’s wrestling is definitely something to look forward to. As a beginning wrestler, Shawn went through a lot of learning and ended up with a record of 2 and 15. Neil Feldhacker; Neil has an excellent career record of 17 and 6. He suffered an injury at the beginning of the season and was unable to finish it out. Neil should be noted for the excellent skills he has in wrestling. Neil made it to state his sophomore year. The 1986-87 Waterloo Panther Wrestling team proved its strong ability this year by finishing with a 5-3 dual season. Although only short in number, the team made up for some of the dual losses by their drive and determination, which proved them winners. Mr. Jim Bovee coached wrestling again for the tenth year. This year he was nominated as one of the top ten Class D Nebraska state high school wrestling coaches, a very deserving and rewarding honor. Mr. Lynn Vyskocil is also commended for his positive attitude and spirit for the wrestlers. This year the team says good-bye to seniors Neil Feldhacker, Jim Rhoades, Glen Shepherd, and student manager for two years, Steph White. Jim Rhoades: A two time state qualifier, Jim also passed the 100th career win mark. (105) Jim has been a bright spot of the team and finished with a terrific record fo 26 and 9. Congratulations! She qualified for state. Other track members who placed at districts were Shawn Teutsch who placed 4th in the 3200 meter run and 6th in the 800 meter run. Renne McDonald, a freshman, placed 6th in the 400 meter run at districts also. Matt Burns high jumped 5'11 for his best jump and did well in the 200 and 400 meter runs. When Coach Pat Ivers was asked about his team he stated, “Our numbers were low, but the people were dedicated and worked very well.” There were only nine people on the team, two of whom were girls, but they had a good season, and Waterloo is proud of their hard work and dedication. 23 JUNIOR HIGH Front row; Nicole Sanders, Katie Adler, Heather Lee, Sally Shepherd, Leslie Benke, Becky Barnes, Alicia Collins. Queen Steph and King Neil are crowned. The afternoon stroll. The Panthers play a tough defense. The cheerleaders in a picture perfect pose. Homecoming ’86 Everyone will remember Homecoming ’86. “This Is The Time” was our theme by STYX. The whole week was filled with spirit and fun. Our halls were decorated by everyone. The seniors wrote their names on a wall. The freshmen has a strobe light in their hall. Skits were original and well planned this year. All ending with intentions of a Friday night smear. Our spirit increased and anxiety mounted, We would not know until the votes were counted. The freshmen won the spirit contest, Although everyone thought his own class was best. The volleyball team was out-of-sight. The football team lost, but put up a fight! The cheerleaders got down to a Little Richard routine. All eyes were on them and much spirit was seen. The candidates, Kelli, Ryan, Chris, and Kevin, Were super representatives of the class of ’87. Queen Steph in her dress and King Neil in dress pants Were a joy to watch during their royalty dance. Homecoming went by with a raving success. But just ask student council about Saturday’s mess! 34 (picture right) “Take that, Barb! Hey! Does anyone have a breath mint? Paul’s mother, father, teacher and neighbor all notice his strange behavior, but can’t seem to help him. Paul eventually loses contact with reality and falls into his dream with the snow. The doctor comes for a visit. 37 SPIRIT ZONE The cheering this year has remained the same as last year in the sense that both wrestling and basketball squads united together to cheer for our new eight-man football team. Even though they suffered the loss of the pep-club, they have learned to overcome that and yell a little louder. Senior and captain of the basketball squad, Tammy Pedersen commented, “We’re a good group; and we work great together, so we made cheerleading a lot of fun.” “They worked really hard at camp and earned a superior trophy, and I am real proud of that,” said Mrs. Judy Long-brake, sponsor of the squads. Many parents and others have commented on what a fun, lively squad we have this year. I hope more guys go out next year.” Troy Renter, a senior and a member of the choir stated, “More underclassmen should go out because it’s not as bad as people make it out to be.” The first time the mixed choir preformed together was at the PTO meeting, Monday, February 16. 41 ORAL COMMUNICATION UR, Ingie; UL. Farewell to Our Foreign Exchange Students This year the Senior Class was invaded by two new students. No, they weren’t just ordinary students; they were foreign exchange students. These brave students dared to do the impossible: to go where they have never gone before. Yes, folks, they entered the Panther Zone. Their mission was to complete their senior year in a foreign country. Thje two students are Rikke Klit-gaard Kloppenborg from Aalborg, Denmark, and Vilma Aleida Moreno Cano from Hernosillo, Mexico. They will surely be missed by everyone when they return to their countries. We all wish them good luck and hope they will visit us again. 55 LEADERS OF THE ZONE Seniors wait in anticipation for Hamlet. Hard at work selling slush puppies. m t Lady Panther Zone! The seventh graders study hard. 58 The crowd in “awe.” The Juniors work hard selling cake raffles. Amy and Crystal model the latest fashions. The women of the future. Mr. Boner lends a hand to the elementary students during their P.E. class. Michelle, Ingie and friends take a little “breather.” The Juniors demonstrate their spirit. Some of the sixth grade girls gather to talk about after-school plans. 59 JUNIORS Dave Fredkin Peggy Haas Bret Kohn Jean Malolepszy Steffanie Nelson Tammy Andrews Page Bassinger Carrie Bennett Mike Copeland Kelli Dalton Juniors, “to be or not to be?” 00 . . . So far they have started raising money for prom. They have sold magazines, flowers, and had a cake raffle. Out of the eight new high school students, four are in the junior class. Our foreign exchange student, Ingie Vifarsdottir, is giving it her all. She was born in Iceland, but lives in Denmark. Ingie has nothing but good things to say about America, but also misses home. Our other three newcomers are Dave Fredkin from Las Vegas; Ann Stenglein from Omaha Marian; and Kelli Dalton from Omaha Bryan. The majority went out for a school involved activity. Four juniors were in One Act Play and two are in National Honor Society. Dave and Bret cheer on the panthers. 61 SOPHOMORES Scott Smith enthused about his day. This year fourteen out of seventeen students have participated in all different sports events. This year’s sophomore students listed some of the things they like to do in their spare time: 1. go to the movies; 2. watch television; 3. listen to music; 4. go to parties; 5. go shopping; 6. participate in sports events; 7. talk on the phone; 8. kill the ants collected last year. In our sophomore class, we have two people participating in band. One student is involved in yearbook. We also have three outstanding artists, Tom Oyster, Jack Rittenhouse, Brad Renter. Tom does the cartoons for the school newspaper, The Panther Paws. All three boys have won art awards at various art shows. 63 FRESHMEN Jill Bednar Corbin Bennett Kasey Buckingham Skip Burress Dawn Hawthorne Timothy Jensen Brian Landen Clinton Lavigne Spirited Freshmen The freshmen class surprised everyone this year with its outstanding school spirit during Homecoming Spirit Week. When asked how she felt about her class winning the spirit stick, Jill Bednar commented, “I’m very proud of our class winning the spirit stick because a lot of upper classmen said we couldn’t do it and we worked really hard to prove them wrong. Brett Thompson added, “I think it’s pretty neat that we’re the first freshmen class to win it, and I think we deserve it because we worked hard at it. The average freshmen has attended Waterloo for six years. In their spare time, freshmen like to read, watch television, hunt, and party. The three major sports in which freshmen like to participate are track, volleyball, and basketball. 64 We are the freshmen and we are the best!” 1986 winners of the spirit stick.
