Many changes have occurred since the first edition. The first yearbook was published in 1935. A fire destroyed the Waterloo Public School pictured above. A fire can destroy a building, but it cannot extinguish the memories of those who work, study, and play within its walls. Memories live forever. The staff of Panther Tour '86 hopes that years from now the laughter and tears you experience at Waterloo will come to life as you tour this 50th edition. 2 INTRODUCING ... Changes Many changes occurred in the 1985-86 school year — new faces, new classes, new ideas, new challenges. Waterloo School published its first newspaper The Panther Paws. Freshman and sophomore classes elected class officers for the first time. The “Blue Crue , an all male cheering squad, appeared on the scene. Homeroom periods, new classes, and a delicious salad bar added enthusiasm to the school year. New staff members and new students were welcomed warmly to Waterloo Public School. New teachers: (left to right) Principal Scott Clark; Miss Donna Schark, Fifth Grade; Mr. Ron Boner, Activities Director. Science; Mrs. Leslie Stratton, music; Mr. Robert Kamphaus. math. Mrs. Flynn cutting the cake during the faculty's party for her. Changing Lifestyles The 1985-86 school year marked a time of changing lifestyles for two high school faculty members. Mrs. Diane Flynn, who has been our guidance counselor for three years, got married to Dave Flynn on October 26, 1985. Although most of us think of getting married as a huge change in lifestyle, Mrs. Flynn said she hasn't gone through any major changes yet. She said she’s only experienced minor ones, such as having trouble finding the car keys or the checkbook. Mr. Robert Simpson is experiencing a lifestyle change of a different nature. After fourteen and a half years at Waterloo, Mr. Simpson retired at semester break. Mr. Simpson said that he plans to get a part-time job and spend some time fishing. The students put their money together to buy Mr. Simpson a balloon-o-gram on his last day. 6 Mr. Simpson and his wife Arlene during the faculty's party for him. The week was filled with elaborate costumes and outrageous skits. Dress varied from toga, to punk rock, to Hawaiian. The skits dealt with such subjects as “Martian’s watching the big game , “Jeopardy , and “How to win the big game when they won’t let you play”. The Juniors were the spirit stick winners as well as the class race winners. The big homecoming game was a struggle against overwhelming odds. The players tried their best, but it wasn’t quite enough. The Homecoming Dance showed everyone in their finery, ready to dance the night away. Before the dancing began, however, King Gregg and Queen Cathy were presented to the crowd along with their royal court: Rod, Sharon, Martin, Katie, Steve, and Paula. The lights went down, and the rest is history. 10 11 The Blue Crue is pre- T-shirt days. Homecoming candidates, l-r Cathy Legrand. Gregg Heiman, Paula Rowswell, Rod Schingler, Sharon Maas. The juniors have kept themselves busy this year trying to earn money for The Junior-Senior Prom. They made a great start by selling over thirteen hundred dollars worth of magazine subscriptions. The juniors are willing to try anything to raise money - everything from selling cake raffles to selling candy in the halls after school. Hopefully, all their work will not go unrewarded, and their class will have the best prom ever. The class lost a long time friend when Danny Wolters left for Pawnee City after first quarter. However, as the class said goodbye to Danny - it said hello to two new students — Chris Moore and Bill Hammock. Welcome to Waterloo. 24 Barb, did he get me in the picture? The Sophomore Class, the smallest class in the school proves itself to be one of the most determined. Sophomores take on the traditional roles of student life: classwork, homework, and sports; but school isn’t the only thing the sophomores think about — fun has its place too. Summer activities ranged from going to Sprite Night to waterskiing and sunbathing. Some sophomores decided to leave this great state of ours and travel to places like Kansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Missouri, Iowa, California, Washington, D.C. and Mexico. The sophomores gained three new members this year: From Minnesota, Steffanie Nelson; from Elkhorn, Page Bassinger; from Montana, Carrie Bennett. All through the year, the sophomores showed their stuff, taking it all in stride with the proud thought going through their heads, we’re lovin' every minute of it . These young adults listed their class preferences: shop, physical education and health, English, math, study hall, science and geography. Twelve students of this class are involved in sports. The sports they are most involved in are basketball, track, and football. In their spare time, the freshmen like to collect ants, watch television, listen to the radio, and talk on the phone. During the summer, the freshmen swim, ride cycles, play baseball, watch television, and sleep. BOYS’ BB “Our record was disappointing, but not our season. We accomplished a lot of things in one year; there was a lot of improvement in each player. Those were the comments of Coach Ron Boner after the Boys' Basketball team finished its season with a 1-15 record. Although it was a little sparse on the record side, the season did not come without its rewards. After weeks and weeks of hard work, the team finally got its first victory - at Conestoga in the second-to-last regular season game (You had to be there to know how good it felt). Also, Steve Lacombe and Kevin Hartman were named to the ECNC All-Conference team; Steve on the first team; Kevin on the second team. The junior varsity team also experienced a victory drought. The JV finished 0-8. Coach Bob Kamphaus said the JV made a lot of progress this year, even without getting a win. “We played a lot better late in the season. We were more competi-tive.” Coach Boner said he is striving to build a good basketball program at Waterloo. He stated that the two co-captains of this year's squad, seniors Steve Lacombe and Phil Serfass, played important roles in his attempt to build the program. We’re losing two good seniors. They were both a very big part in helping to build a good program.” The 1985-86 Boys Basketball Team: 1st Row (Left to Right) B. Renter, J. Rittenhouse, P. Serfass, S. Lacombe, and K. Many fun events were put on: Money was donated for the addition of fans to the school gymnasium; school spirit was raised. Before the school year started, the Student Council went on a retreat to Camp Calvin Crest. Student councils from Valley and Arlington were also at the retreat. At the retreat, the Student Council learned leadership skills. The student council runs concession stands for all home high school athletic events. The money raised by the sale of concessions is used to sponser events and is donated to some causes; for instance, the addition of fans. The Council sponsered the 1st Annual Talent Show this year, over twenty acts ranging from lip syncs to comedy acts entertained the audience. It is hoped the talent show grows into an annual event. Every year the Student Council holds an elementary field day in the spring. Elementary students participate in games for prizes. Student support is meant for the students not involved in sports to cheer on those that are. According to tradition, the support comes from the cheerleaders and the pep club. Breaking out of tradition, Waterloo started the Blue Crue, an all male organization. The purpose of the Blue Crue is to cheer on the girls’ volleyball team. This group also helps with the initiation of the freshmen boys. In the years to come, the cheerleaders, the pep club and the Blue Crue will stay and become a Waterloo tradition. The elementary students worked with a number of media including chalk, crayon and, of course, their favorite, clay. At one point, the students drew their views of the world. Older students sharpened drawing skills and began working ideas of design. The junior high had experience in calligraphy, clay, painting, design concepts, and drawing. Many students won prizes at the annual Art Music Festival. The upper classmen worked in advanced drawing, oil painting, scratch-board, printmaking and sculpture. Mar-celo Aguiar and Tom Oyster both won honorable mention in the competition at the scholastic Art Show. ART lathy and Chris setting up for the art show. 69 JUST BETWEEN Hey Seniors!
