I I I I I I I I I I CLASS HISTORY In the year 1939 nine eager children marched bravely un to the school house door. Miss Rand, our teacher found the lollowing in her .rooms Karialice KcArdle, Donna Jean Smith, Kenneth Lockwood, Mickey Villwok, Lea Mae Trullinger, Dale Betters, Dicky Flynn, Alyn Kasl, and Lewis White. The end of the first semester Miss Ranr left the school and Miss Roscoe was our teacher for the remaining term and for the second grade. Mickey Villwok, Loa Mae Trullin er, Dnd Dale Eetters ropped back recucing our class to seven. In the third grace Miss Hansen endeavored to teach us the multiplication tables, spelling, and readir.r. During our third year Lloyd Jensen and Noel Chavet joined our class. Alyn Kasl and Lewis White moved at the end of the year so there were still seven in our class. Miss Hansen was again our teacher in the fourth grade. We lost no classmates and received no new ones. Kiss Moore was our teacher when we were in the fifth grade. Our class remained the same until the second semester of our sixth year in school when Nancy Lou Miller from Omaha Joined us, V e lost and received no students during the seventh grade. Miss Samson was our teacher. _ _KrSj Fletcher was our teacher during the first semester of the eighth grade. Mrs. Fletcher had to leave because of illness and Mrs. Sell was our teacher for the rest of the year. V e ended our grade school years with a class oarty at Nancy Killer home. Nov; the long awaited moment had arrived. We were green freshmen. How vivid are the memories of chat day when we walked into the assembly to be greeted by stares and scoffs at our bashfulness and apparent terror seeing nurils so much wiser and older than we. The fres jnen ''lass consisted of the following: Marialice McArdle, Donna Jean Smith, Nancy Miller, Dorothy Rowell, Ernie Renter, Bill Clark, Marion Gordon, Kenneth Lockwood, Lloyd Jensen and Tom Shepherd. V e were all scared, small and green, green up to the freshmen initiation and were later classed as true highschoolers. We gained two new members to our class that year, they were Jean Lesch and Muriel McKenna, but we also lost two. Bill Clark moved to Iowa and Marion Gordon moved to Ogallala. Mrs. V ilson was our class sponsor during that year. Mrs. V ilson was again chosen our sponsor in our Second year of high school. We lost one of our classmates, Tom Shenherd, who quit school to work. The membership of our class remained the same during our Junior year, with Mr. Leo Ryan as our sponsor. We put on a three-act lay entitled Sally Sallies Forth , and a Box Social. The proceedings went toward our Junior-Senior Banquet which was held at the Black Stone Hotel in Omaha. Finally came the day when we became sophisticated Seniors. Our class and teachers were the same except for Muriel McKenna who left school to get married. (continued on next page.) I I I ( I Continued Class History 1 Vr. Ryan was a;ain chosen as our class sponsor. The Seniors -ttx their sneak day on May 4. ve journeyed to Lincoln and went si ;ht-seeing. 7.e ended the day wltn a movie. Baccalaureate services were held on May 13 In the Presbyterian at Waterloo The Graduation took place on Vay 18. I I I I I In the summer of 1967 I was sent by my employer or. a business trip to ny home twwn. Waterloo, Nebraska. I had'nt been back to Waterloo since I had left fifteen years ago. Much to ny surprise the small town had grown into a large city. What used to be the main street was now Old Waterloo. It may sound silly, but I could'nt find my way around in the town where I had been raised. I hailed a taxi, and had it take me down to Robinson Seed Company which had grown considerably. The main of .’ices now took in 6 blocks. After I had gotten in the taxi, I noticed the driver looked familiar, but was somewhat heavier than I remembered her. Arennt you Donna Jean Smith? I asked. Yes, I used to be, but I am now Mrs. Don Jones. Don broke up with his steady girlfriend, Marialice McArdle, and msrrict r.e. Where is Don now? I asked. Don is home minting our six kids. Why does'nt Don work so that you can stay home and take care of the kids? Don can't stay sobcrlong enougi to '..old a job, she replied. I bid Donna goodbye and proceeded in to the main office of Robinsons I was greeted at the entrance by a tall slender man who said he was vice president of Robinson Seed Company. I later learned that he was my old classmate Ernie Renter. Geei Long time no see. What brought you back? Ernie askad. I am back on a business trip. Mow is life treating you? I asked. I am married to Marialice McArdle who usee to babysit for tie 'Robinson Twins.' Won't you come over for dinner tomorrow? I am sorry, I'd sure like to come to dinner and see my old classmate Mac, before I leave, but I can't possibly make it. By the way Ernie could you tell me where I could find a good hotel. Lloyd Jensen ownes one on Jensen Avenue. You can't possibly miss it. It is all decorated up in brightly colored neon lig': ts. Ernie, ive my best regards to Marialice for me. I will have tc be on my way now, but I'm awfully glad to have fe.cen you wiilc I was here. My taxi was waiting. As I got out of the taxi to register at t'r e hotel, a man with a long beard and rag ed clothes burn'ed into me and knocked me do m. Then he ran riel t on over me with his cart. I got painfully to ny feet and said to the street cleaner What's wrong wit1 you? Can't you see where you're going? Ho , he said sadly, Thnts what hap ened. My eyesight is failing me fast. At times I can hardly see anything. As he talked, I finally placed ! is voice I I I I I You could1nt ,e lien Lockwooc.could you? V hy yes, I am, he said in a surprised tone of voice. I am sorry this had to happen:, but we may have never net otherwise, lien said apologetically. How is Dorothy? there do you live now? (taking it for granted that Ken and Dot were maiTied.) I an living in a shack down by the Llkhorn River. Dorothy broke our engagement, and 1 never quite recovered from the shock. Where is Dorothy now? I asked. She is married to beryl LcKelvey and lives in Albuqurque, Lew I. exico Mexico, he sighed. Ken helped me to my feet and 1 went over to the Waterloo Hospital where I was taked in a surgical room for observation. The only thing I liked about this was that tne nurse was very pretty. I heard one of the doctors call her Mss Lc'sch, 1 wondered if it could be the same Mss Lesch that I used to know. rardon me Mss, nut are you Jean she recognized me. V«hy yes. «hat brings you here? Are you still a student nurse? ho I am row a Heristereo burse, make nursing ny career.0 Lesch? I asked. After a while she said,as she recognized me. 1 asked. I stayed single and decided to After visiting with Jean for a l ov more minutes and having n; scratches taken care I was on my way back to th hotel to see Lloyd. Lloyd recognized me right away. He ,.al. up to me, grasped my hand and shook it so nard I could hear my knuckles cracking, ..elcb ie ack. I thought you said you would r.cver return when you left.Lloyd said, still shaking my hand vigorously all the while. I am back here on a business trip, ut ± was hoping to see some of my old classmates while I'm in town. V hat have you een doing in the past fifteen ears? I am married to Amelene Zwiebel and have five little girls ranging. In ages from 1-5. Loyd showee me to my room end told me to rest well, and try to get used to him with five little girls. After supper tint night 1 decided to go to Red's Stage Review, which was playing at one of Waterloo's many theaters. After 1 had pusheo ny way to a seat 1 saw a line of ;.ula hula girls forming a conga line across the stage. uch to my surprise the girl heading the procession looked familiar. I looked again and found it none other than ancy Lou Killer who used to be very timid. Sho had her hair dyea a oeep Auburn. After the show I went back stage to see Nancy. hello Nancy Lou. Do you own this place ? Yes 1 own this place. I married I.’oon KcArdle, but we arc divorced. s.-.e told rne. what was t. c trou' le, Haney? Loon did'nt approve of my job. she replied. By this time it was getting late so I .id Honey adieu and hurried ack to Loyd's Hotel to get some shut eye after such an exciting day. I I I I I SEKIOR CLASS FOLh The Waterloo school house.
