Katherine Radke 5 ...Jn During the next few weeks approxi- mately 33.000 young men and women will graduate from the public high schools of Wisconsin. Of this group of young people several thousand will he enrolled in some institution of higher learning next year: however, for the ma- jority. graduation from high school will mark the end of formal education. Whether you enroll in a college next September. or begin your life's occupa- tion, l hope that all of you will take full advantage of every opportunity to continue your learning. Although our schools and colleges provide the teachers and equipment to help acquire ex- tensive knowledge, develop skills, and gain better understanding in a rela- tively short time. much learning still occurs outside of the classroom. In fact I will venture to say that the happiness and degree of success which you will enjoy during your life will be largely determined by the extent to which you continue your learning through life. As our society has become more and more complex and we become more and more dependent upon our fellow citizens in our everyday living. the need for well trained and disciplined minds and the fullest development of the de- sirable personal qualities have become more essential for every individual. These qualities of character and personality are among the most important factors in determining success or failure in life. Through numerous personal studies we have found that the qualities of character-i.e., honesty, loyalty, dependability, thoroughness, cooperation, and punctuality, rather than the lack of knowledge or skill accounts for nine out of every ten job failures. I believe all of you are aware of what these desirable personal qualities are. Of course, development of them is another matter. However, I would like to elaborate briefly upon a couple of these qualities. They are ones to which you may or may not have given much consideration: they are not men- tioned as frequently as others, but they are ones over which I find employers to be greatly concerned, The first of these is what we call ingenuity: the other resourcef-ulness. lngenuity is skill in devising or combining techniques and ideas: it is the cleverness of design. We might say it is the ability to conceive new and 6 7110 gm nf 7953 trtnt t lol or xx xxx t mt xxoul toluwlx .ir u t . s 1 N15 x o v ut tan htm ut tt noux 1 t K to our xxx un nu f o xnxx mom t st O v L N 1 . 1 O us muxt pawn X t t mxtn :xt Q-,nlux o 1 1om1 won wut :txt Ihif Luth of us xhot lrt our L ortx toward n utr nn ttter xxaxx o tnrrxlnq ou our tulw .mt ru OIlNll5ll1f1tN t Ast xx must it xxl n o rx mu me l nmlus 1 t Llillkk what XOUI 7llINlll ld 1 L tt Il odx .md ldt xx xour lt 1 t . x L us p tm. nu xxxll . xx at lk o .mum tontuwuttd xomt lllk 0 Kout . 4 xou Nl u ruxtnttt Ildllkld out xou utotm fdrmtr xo r n xt t w t mart pun so tr dollar of fttd .L Il o our to L 1 mx uttnlvu to our trtmtmlous proqrt xx Clurmq tht rut ll kLlltlllllN Rtsourufulmss is dthntd as tht ilulxtx to n tat urultllstatuts and our ut dlffluxltx s rl ll x xr our rmldx thmwn mort IR urtu stanus mxolucl ln ptrfoxmlnq lolws and llXlIlq lldI'IIlOIllOLlSlX xuth cur ftlloxx mtn .art dlfl'-CFL nt todux from xxhdt thu wart a war xqo .md to ht surf thty xxlll lu dxflrcrent nut xt r VX t ax xour ttathtrx tannot posslblx prcptart xou for L1I'LL1IllSIElIlLhS about xxhxth Xu know nothlnq todax We hfue trled to proxlde Xou vnth Somt of tht fundamentals Xklllgll l am sure you vull uttlt t IN xar1ous sltuatlons but tht alulltx to use those slulls that knoxxledgt and understandmg vshlth you noxx possess 1 Qomethxnq XKl'l1Cl'l you must dcxelop To he resourceful ont must extr be alert to what 18 gomg on about h1m or Lannot IQHOFQ or uadt the dlHlCUlt hut must fam up to such cxrcumstanccs squarely and make: tht bcxt of xx hat he has at that moment Your emplour Ldnnot posslhlx antlupdtt ill tht problems xou nxqht tn tounter on xour ,oh but nf xou xull nmkt tht fxllt st use. of all your knowledge talents and xlulls m ill sxtuutrons xou xull han 1 qood lmttnng auruqt norm dzffltult or sxmplt prohlems Your strxltcs xxnll lu rn demand and xou v.1ll III rtturn tnlox A rrthtr and happltr lxft knovunq that xou ham some-thmq to offtr whnh othtre gonsldtr xxorthvhmlt COHQF3fUldflOI15 to the Class of 1933 and may the. future hold ID story the but of l1fe for mach of you Eldon M Amundson 7 .
