Since that day the staff has grown to an organization of about thirty members. These members have worked many hours to produce this year ' s annual. There are different fields and areas in which the members chose to devote their time. There are many things to be done: work in the layout department, the photography department, and the typing department, which keeps people busy. Those with a hand to write can always be used in the write-ups. Then there is always the selling of advertise¬ ments to sponsor the annual. All these things and many more need to be tied together to make a successful year¬ book! Although the staff worked hard to meet the deadlines, our annual would not have been possible without the out¬ side help of many people. We want to express our deepest thanks to Mr. Bernie Tucker, our sponsor, and to Miss Mable Bevington, for her assistance. Both spent countless hours with us trying to help us assemble the book. We wish to thank the American Yearbook Company for their fine job in publishing our book. Our most sincere thanks goes to the busi¬ ness firms, merchants and other individuals who pur¬ chased advertising for our annual. The Staff Editor: Linda Sebert, Asst. Editor: Rosie Lockwood, Bus. We all had to settle down once again to studying ... It didn ' t take long until things got going full speed . . . Things really got started with the first record hop of the season by the seniors . . . The band had been working hard before school started under a new di¬ rector--I mogene Mavis. They came many evenings this summer and early fall to get ready for the many parades and field trips that they were invited to. Their two main events were the trip to Purdue Band Day and the Dekalb County Free Fall Fair . . . Mary Ann Overmeyer represented Waterloo in the Miss Dekalb County Beauty Pageant . . . Jo Voss had the Grand Champion pig at the fair . . . The cross¬ country team worked hard and we are proud that they did better than in previous years . . . Campaigns for the election were a lot of fun for the senior government class . . . Hoosier Hysteria began at Water¬ loo on November 6th with our game at Albion . . . The basketball season hit its peak when we defeated THE tall Garrett team . . . We met our first defeat with the Lakeland team a few weeks later . . . As the Christmas season drew near we got in the spirit with the 5 - i ' t ie nd y id :r in ir- e W.M.S. ' 65 Christmas Concert by the chorus and band and the senior Mistletoe Hop ... We brought back the trophy from the Holiday Tourney at Hamilton . . . With the holidays over the students buckled down to studying for their semester finals . . . The juniors put much hard work into their Sweetheart Prom at which the Freshman Candidate Sandy Pfefferkorn was crowned queen . . . Late in February the seniors and a few juniors were able to take a one-day trip to see the state legislature in action . . . The basketball season ended with a good record of 20 wins and 4 losses with our defeat in the last game of the sectional by Garrett . . . The whole high school worked to¬ gether to produce the annual school play . . . The band and chorus gave its year ' s final accomplishment of the year with its annual spring concerts . . . Finally comes the long awaited senior trip . . . To finish the year came the baccalaureate and commencement exercises . . . All these events and many more show that the students of Waterloo High School are full of enthusiasm and feeling so the La Rosa Cerrada staff would like to show you this enthusiasm by introducing you to . . . These men and women are devoted to their tasks of teaching, yet they are far more than mere teachers. They are examples of men and women which we as students observe and judge and criticize in all their various duties and pleasures. We hope that we may as adults match their fine example which they have given through their help and inspiration. n Qufj UiiiM f id U.u D m£mv 12 DejCcJlb Ctohol UrifaL Qdmt D i bddb BoojkI Under the supervision of the School Board of DeKalb Central United School District, the stu¬ dents, teachers, and other in¬ terested people have cooperated in work, study, and extracurricular activities. Have I taught them the joy of clean living? That honor is better than fame? That good friends are the greatest of treasures? Wealth, less than an untarnished name? Have I taught them respect to the aged? Protection to those that are weak? That silence always is golden When gossip bids them speak? Have I taught them that fear is a coward Who is beaten when they say, I can? That courtesy ranks with courage In the heart of real gentelmen? Have I taught them these things and the others That will help make them brave, kind and true. If I have, then I care not if they tell me, That Machu Picchu is not a town in Peru. FRIEDA E. Happy-go-lucky, gay-hearted are we, But pensive, responsible, too. We like knowledge, excitement, and things serene, And to be heard and to be seen. Through twelve grades we have worked; No longer can we look forward to Another eventful year at Waterloo, For what was once in the near future Is now in the recent past: We have graduated at last. ' Tis often true that with the passing of time One collects more memories And entertains fewer hopes; We, however, have not yet reached the point At which we can no longer set goals, For our whole life lies ahead of us. Whether or not it may be dreaded, In forty-five different directions we ' re headed. So to students and teachers of Waterloo High And her classrooms and corridors we say good-by. • • ' ; , .1 ■ I J . H 1 V £ Jf A 0 ua nTir I ' ■ i 1 i i The Long Awaited Senior Trip was finally here. Our goal had finally been reached. The embarkation time was set at 8:15, May 14, 1965. We left ten minutes early. First stop, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. To stay awake on the first night out was almost a requirement, and several members took it upon themselves to see that the rest didn ' t sleep. Washington finally loomed on the horizon, and in the next two days it was conquered by the group. At last they came to realize what a symbol of democracy Washington, D.C. is to the citizens of the world as well as to the citizens of the United States. Now off to New York and the Worlds Fair. We arrived early Tuesday evening. Then off to the Empire State Building to see the breathtaking view. The next day, the Worlds Fair. It was the highlight of the trip. Thurs¬ day was filled by taking a grand tour of the city. All too soon for many, it was time to head for Indiana. However, each in his own way experienced and faced many situations, strange and new to him, which will better equip him to face similar situations. Arrival back home meant graduation. Now that it is over we will find ourselves remembering all the fun and other memories of Waterloo School. 33 34 Qtudfij cfe PuMufi f-f(wM6 uv WHS SEATED: B. Friend, D. Haynes, D. Sutton, Mrs. Butler. The group is composed of juniors and seniors who are considering the future occupation of teaching. The students have the opportunity to visit the assigned classrooms while they are in session. There they get classroom experience. They often have the opportunity to do some student teaching. We are glad to welcome this organization to Waterloo and we hope it continues. F.F.A. helps agriculture by presenting today ' s problems in agriculture to the public. The program ' s purpose is to teach young men to be well-equipped modern farmers using the latest techniques and methods in farming. The boys themselves have an aim To develop competent, aggressive rural Ag. leadership and build individual farming programs for establishments in farming. The 4-H is a club for youth who are between the ages of 10 and 21 years of age, and take part in farming, homemaking, community service, and other activities. The 4-H motto is: To make the best, better. The pledge is: I pledge My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service, My Health to better living, for my club, my community, and my country. With such a pledge these 4-H ' ers surely hold an important role in the spirit of our school, community, and country. This Page Sponsored by MR. CECIL FITCH WluIl Tktoj Lotwuu ROW 1, R. Woolever, M. There must also be guidance to teach them the skills of athletics. Our coaches, with their guidance and patience, worked with our boys. From these hours of practice came winning teams. We congratulate them for a fine season of sports. He is counted on to have that rosin can in the huddle. He can be counted on to soothe the pain of an injury. Sutton, B. Platt, B. Toneman, J. Starkey, D. Nodine, P. Patterson, K. Dunn, J. Giradot. Many people believe that this edition of the Waterloo Wildcats was the best team ever to come from W.H.S. Blessed with height, speed, good shooters, and one of the best coaches in the area, the Wildcats went all the way to the final game of the Kendallville sectional before bowing to the tall Garrett Railroaders. During the regular season the Wildcats compiled a 17 win, 3 loss record. Together with the 3 wins and 1 loss in the sectional, they finished their season at 20 wins and only 4 defeats. This is the best record ever compiled by a Water¬ loo team. Although the boys and coaches receive most of the credit for this wonderful season, there are other factors that helped make this such a good year. The way in which the fans, both young and adult backed the team was tremendous. The team appreciated this very much, and they would like to thank all for backing them.
