Dedication To the ALUMNI OF WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL we gratefully dedicate this 1962 ROSEBUD. Because we appreciate the foundations of our education, which you helped to lay in your student days at Waterloo School. . . Because of your constant encouragement, your support--both morally and finan- Clallyz.. Because of your continued interest in our school and in our community . Because many of our alumni are now our dear parents, our relatives, and our very good friends. . . We are proud and happy to dedicate to you this Golden Anniversary Edition of the Rosebud. : P L Og L CSS is the keynote of Education in the _ community of Waterloo during the last half-century. _ Many changes have been made through the years. The school building itself no longer stands. Only the bell, which many years ago called the children of Waterloo to classes, now remains enshrined in the City Park. Their grandchildren look at it now and ponder thought- fully what it would have been like to attend school in Waterloo in those days. In 1912, the graduating class numbered seven - all boys. Today's senior class is composed of forty-four members. There were ten faculty members then; to- day's faculty numbers twenty-seven. One of the great- est advancements in education, though, is seen in the curriculum. Classes offered to seniors in 1912 were: English Literature, Virgil, Physics, History and Govern- ment, Physical Geography or Geology, Music and Draw- ing (once a week). Today's seniors are offered Art, Band, Chorus, Mu- sic Theory and Appreciation, Home Economics or Agri- culture, Typing, Bookkeeping, Advanced Shorthand, Government and Economics, Industrial Arts, Physics or Chemistry, Senior Mathematics, English, and Spanish. Fifty years ago the method of transportation to school was very simple. A student either walked to school or rode his horse. Today the students who do not live in town come on one of the five school buses. This year Waterloo School acquired a beautiful new 73 pas- senger school bus, of which the students, teachers, and administrators are very proud. This is the only school-owned bus Waterloo has. In 1912 the students who did not live in town carried their lunch to school. Today the Waterloo School Cafeteria, operated by Mrs. Reuah Bixler and Mrs. Lorna Dove, serves about 350 delicious hot meals daily. Athletics has always been a major interest of boys and girls in Waterloo. When the old school was still being used, _ the students had their basketball games in the .Town Hall. The present school building was erected in 1926. Several _ years later the gymnasium was built. It has been the scene of many exciting and thrilling games. | We have many clubs at Waterloo High School which are chapters of national organizations, dedicated to service in aH | } | various fields. Some of these are Future Farmers Ee of America, 4-H, Y-Teens, National Honor So- ciety, and Student Council. This year, two new clubs were organized. These were Future Teach- ers of America, and Girls’ Athletic Association. Fifty years ago there were only two organiza- tions, called the Zedalethean Literary Society and the Ciceronian Literary Society. Each club tried to train its members to be better leaders and speakers, and to be more at ease before an audience. The clubs competed in sports, class elections, and other school activities. The Waterloo School system has grown and changed with the times gracefully. The orig- inator of the yearbook name, ROSEBUD, must have had prophetic vision. He recognized that Waterloo High School was a bud, destined to become a beautiful blossom. Yes, Waterloo High School is blooming now, and it will not begin to wilt as long as the community, alumni, students, and faculty continue to support it. Lines Dedicated Co WH.S. Your ancient pile of brick and stone Means more to us than the learned tone Of lessons learned within thy zone. We cannot part without a pang Of pain that jars like a jarring clang. The feeling is deep and its rooted to stay Till our bodies are changed to useless clay. Association has made you dear to us all, Memories that are dear, we often recall; May your fullness live on and never fall. Charles Thomas Waterloo High School, 1912 This page reproduced from the first edition of the ROSEBUD, 1912. ual Ta | To The Class Of 2012 So many “truths” of 1912 are now no longer true That we are forced to reassess what we bequeath to you. If our high school's to be revered as long as memories last It must be the transmitter of the best of all that’s passed. What'er abides should boldly say across the span of years, “Not having truth, but seeking truth, will compensate for fears.’ So with these tests to guide us, the question now is clear; What will remain in 2012 to show that WE were here? LS Class of '62 Waterloo High School Urban Steckler, Superintendent TO THES TLUDENTS OF Welles: The educational interest of students has bettered itself through the years, Each graduation class con- tributes to the school its unique set of values, The teachers and student leaders must receive the credit for this improvement, Another yearbook has been produced--this golden anniversary edition, which marks fifty years of progress in education in Waterloo. This yearbook helps to perpetuate your memories which have a real and lasting value. To the staff of the 1962 ROSEBUD, I say, “Thank you for a job well done, CUnbeuw ite Marilyn Gurtner James Miller, Principal As part of the continued progress of Waterloo High School, we have, for the first time, a qualified guidance director and counselor. Our principal, James Miller, serves in this capacity. He helps the students develop their educational and vocational plans. He works toward finding scholarships and loans for eligible students. He discusses with them any problem which they may broach to him, In addition, Mr. Miller formulates the schedule of classes and takes care of discipline in junior and senior high school, Mr. Miller holds the Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from Purdue University. Before coming to Waterloo, Mr. Miller coached basketball at Mississinewa High School. His wife, Wilma, is aregistered nurse. The couple has one child, seven-year-old Jimmie. Our school is fortunate, in- deed, to have Mr, Miller join the staff. Lois Armstrong School Board PROGRESS IN EDUCATION IN WATERLOO would not have been possible without the work of the members of our School Board. Upon the shoulders of these men ulti- mately rests much of the responsibility for seeing that Waterloo School is top-notch. The physical plant must be maintained, The personnel--administrators and teachers must be hired, and their salaries paid. The School Board works closely with the super- intendent to supervise and coordinate all school activities. As our school has grown so rapidly in recent years, this task has become increasingly difficult. The students of Waterloo School are grateful to the members of the School Board. We appreciate the effort they have expended in our behalf, and the countless hours of their time which they devoted to school work, Without these men, who form the back- bone of our school administration, Waterloo School could never have become the ac- tive, progressive seat of learning that it is. Members now serving on the School Board are Wayne Voss, President; John Graham, Treasurer; and Fern Morr, Treasurer. Faculty “4 RICHARD D. ' Marsha Hodges Phil Speer t Nancy Brandon History of the Class of ’62 In September, 1950, forty-one mischievous boys and girls entered Mrs. Duncan's first grade room, After six years we finally made it upstairs to Junior High. Through the seventh and eighth grades we were under the supervision of Mr. Fries and Mr. McIntosh. Then came eighth grade graduation, our promotion to high school. In our Freshman year Mrs, Starkey and Mr. Berg were our class spon- sors, This year we took on the task of starting a fund for our trip to Washington, D. C. and New York in our Senior year. With our sales of candy and other activities we made a good start towards our goal. Under the guidance of Mr, Vaughn in our Sophomore year, we pur- chased our class sweaters, which were black with a big black and white three-D letter on it. We also added a lot of money to our treasury by the sale of candy and by sock hops. During this year our class was thrilled to win the boys’ class tourney in basketball by beating the sen- iors, In our Junior year Mr. Vaughn and Mr. Grimm were our sponsors, We had a most successful play, Mrs. McThing, under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Grimm, With the cookie drive and the Junior Store, we added more money to the treasury. During the year we purchased our beautiful class rings, of which we are very proud, Again this year the boys won the class tourney in basketball. At last we were finally Seniors! Mr. Stump, Mr. Volz, and Mr. Grimm, our sponsors, helped us with our projects and the planning of our Senior Trip. To start our year off, we held an ice cream social late in Septem- ber in the street next to the bank, on the closing day of Merchants’ Days. During this time the Waterloo High School Band performed, un- der the direction of Mr. Volz. Later in the evening dancing and square dancing were enjoyed by the students and many adults. Our Senior pictures were taken on October 1 and 2 by Roberts Studio. Were we ever dressed up!--and thrilled when they arrived in Decem- Der, We had a difficult decision to make in choosing our invitations to our graduation, but were happy and pleased with them when they ar- rived, Finally the day came to spend all our money. We were excited as could be, and thrilled to be embarking on our Class trip. We went by bus to New York and Washington, D. C. The highlight of our trip was our visit to the United Nations. We shall never forget the fun and ex- citement, and the comradeship of our classmates during our last week as students of Waterloo High School. After twelve years of struggle, we finally reached our goal--grad- uation. We wish to thank our parents, teachers, and all others who made this possible. Mat The blackboards aren't the only things that are blank in Senior English classes. Take Mr. Worley's scalp, for exam- ple. (You say somebody has already taken it?) Or take the thoughts of the scholars whose backs are so beautifully pho- tographed. Of course, there's some activity in Room 9, Clinton, angry because he split an infinitive, has just given himself a stiff left to the cheek. Norman is all attention; he thinks the teacher is about to pass out some money. And Jerry is certainly not asleep; on the contrary, he’s reading his marks upside down from Mr. Worley's gradebook. Sally, Coleen, and Valetta have wasted no t ime in getting to the day’s assignment: undangling a participle. Ronnie has his chair pushed back, all ready for a fast getaway in case the word test is mentioned. Marsha watches Keith watching Dick read. And over on the bulletin board the educated giraffe seems to be saying, It may be English, but it ain't senior! . . while visions of amendments danced in their heads. In spite of the faci that the Seniors take every assignment so seriously, the study of American Government is a pretty humorous adventure. Linda's apparent happiness is her natural reaction to maps. While Phil looks over his paper, Frances is busy wrapping Christmas packages. Don has already read the jokes three times so his is a rather knowledgeable grin. The empty chairs mutely testify for those who, after think: ing twice, decided to stay at home. Bookkeeping The senior bookkeeping course includes materials on social security taxes, personal budgeting, and family bookkeeping records that will be helprul to all individuals regardless of their future occupations, All of this material is a matter of importance to everyone, because it is necessary to meet the obligation to our government--local, state, and national. At the end of each semester, the bookkeepers complete a practice set with business papers in order to use what they have learned in class. Among these ac- tivities are sports, which we all enjoy. Many times it is hard to maintain good sportsmanship during games, but the students of Waterloo High School have managed to keep a good record. Our school spirit has improved with the help of the coaches at W.H.S. We are all very happy to have three fine coaches with us this year, Coach Bourquin, who is our Varsity and B-team coach, is doing an excellent job with the boys. Mr. Student Managers Bourquin has been with us for about seven years, and during this time he has served our high school well, as a fine coach and an efficient teacher. Larry Dove, Freshman coach, is in his second year of coaching at Waterloo, Last year he coached the Jun- ior High team, He is teaching the boys many of the fundamentals which they will need when they are on the varsity team, It is most important to teach the boys good sportsmanship as well as good basketball; and Larry Dove is doing both, Ronald Weimer, Junior High coach, is spending his first year at Waterloo. He graduated last June from Man- chester College where he played on the Varsity Basket- ball Team. The students of Waterloo School wish the coaching staff good health and happiness. Through the years at W.H.S,. we have had many basketball teams and many cheer- leaders, but something seemed to be lacking. Last year we decided to meet this prob- lem by forming a Cheer Block. Its purpose is to give our ball team better support. It has added much enthusiasm to our ball games. During these two years the Cheer Block has made great progress under the super- vision of Mrs. Evelyn Ford, the sponsor. The varsity and B-team cheerleaders work with the Cheer Block during the weekly meetings of the group. We hope that the Cheer Block will always continue at Waterloo High School, be- cause it helps to strengthen School Spirit. STANDING: Coach Bourquin, Jim Kuykendall, Bob Platt, Phil Pinkerton. In this organization the boys learn through active participation how to conduct and take part in a meeting, speak in front of a group, assume civic responsibility, fi- nance, and most of all, how to solve their own problems. Through these activities, the Future Farmers of America develop character, sportsmanship, cooperation, thrift, scholarship, and a strong feeling for citizenship and patriotism. This year the boys have been very active in judging contests, farming programs, and F.F.A. basketball. The Waterloo High School Chorus is made up of eighty-five stu- dents in grades seven through twelve. Any Tuesday or Thursday morn- ing during the fourth period, strains of beautiful music are wafted through the halls of our school. All the children waiting For the bell to ring. All their faces happy, Thinking of that day That's just around the corner; It's graduation day. I thought I would be happy, But when it came around, There was a tear in my eye; I had an awful frown. When handed my diploma, I heard my parents say, We saw him grow, and grow, and grow, And now he's going away.” by Carl LeRoy Myers '62 1962 Seniors of 196] at the Nation's Capital FIRST ROW: Nancy Lockwood, Jean Sebert, Sharon Toneman, Carol Schmidt, Janet Hall, Becky Nice, Pat Patter- son, Linda Deetz, Brenda McDonald, Cheryl Pontius, Alyce Bard, Rosanna Harter, Carol Till, Jean Bowman, Sue Brown, Judy Rynearson, Glee Keesler, Sandi Warner, Linda Muzzillo, Shirley Cobbs, Mary Jane Henderson. SENIOR CLASS TRIP The class of 1961 left Thursday evening on the Pennsylvania Railroad for Washington, D. C. While in Washington we stayed at the beautiful Mariott Motor Hotel where a few of our braver souls even tried the swimming pool. The class spent two and one-half days in our nation's capital touring the impres- sive memorials and governmental buildings. A few of the most important of these were the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, U. S. Capitol, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where we witnessed the Chang- ing of the Guard, Mt. Vernon, the White House, Smithsonian Institute, and the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, While we were in Washington we dined at the Casino Royal Nightclub and were treated to a stage show starring Lloyd Price. On Sunday morning we left for New York via American Airlines. After a pleasant fifty-five minute tide, we arrived at La Guardia Airport. Upon landing we went directly to Pier 83 for a four-hour cruise around Manhattan. During our two-and-a-half day visit to New York we visited Times Square, Rocke- feller Center, Chinatown, Statue of Liberty, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Grant's Tomb, Empire State Building, to mention just a few. Two ofthe highlights of our stay were the Tour of the United Nations with luncheon in the Delegates Dining Room, and the evening at Radio City Music Hall, where the class saw the world-famous Rockettes perform before viewing a new movie. The class stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel right in the heart of Manhattan. The seniors left New York at eleven p.m. Tues- day evening, a tired but happy class. We arrived in Ft. Wayne the following afternoon at two p.m. The Senior Class of 1961 would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Ronda Starkey and Mr. L. C. Ford, our senior trip sponsors. They were good sports and saw to it that everyone had a memo- rable time. Some of the graduates as they prepare to receive their diplomas. The years from kindergarten through senior year . . these are years of pleasure and of hard work. What are the thoughts of these seniors who are about to attain the goal for which they have striven for twelve years? Many are thinking “In a few moments this matter of a formal education will be finished, the last stone on the path. Others are thinking of graduation as merely a stepping stone in the path of education. But in each mind is the thought that this is the last night in their life that they can be called a student of Waterloo High School.
