LoTs LUCK E PE U D WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL Waterloo, Indiana A Sesrmnmne: oe Saba it = % TTS) se peas Reed es : oe a on We A asaiaasan ciao Graduation---the vantage point from which we survey our green years. We entered these halls as fledgling freshmen, inspired by the strength, vigor and freshness of youth to create traditions and to grow mentally and spiritually. In contemplation of the past, we may analyze and understand ourselves, for in these pages our true personalities are disclosed. FZ — ADMINISTRATION... FACULTY.... The Rosebud of 1961 will bring the realization of meeting new people. . . the memories of old friends . . the gaiety .. . . the sadness. . . and the compan- ionship of the past school year and how it affected each individual. We gaze into the future with alert minds, having the determination of our plans and dreams to be accom- plished. CLASSES... ORGANIZATIONS... ATHLETICS... If we, the Rosebud Staff, have succeeded in bringing to you these purposes, and have created a silhouette of your high school life, then our efforts will not have been wasted. HERSCHEL CLARK KELLEY The Senior Class of 1961 dedicates this edition of the Waterloo High School Rosebud to Herschel Clark Kelley. Much has been written about Clark Kelley's prominence in our community, his civic works, and his record of thirty-five years as a school bus driver for Waterloo School. But we wish to write of his friendship. In the words of Edgar Guest-- Make new friends, But keep the old. For those are silver, But these are gold. Between the covers of this annual are containedthe memories of the departing seniors. Clark Kelley was our friend, and it is right and fitting that his memory should serve as the strongest link in our golden chain of memories. SCHOOL BOARD Wayne C. Voss Edward C. Barton Walter Haislip John Graham We, the students of Waterloo High School, in recognition of the progress made by our school, wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation and gratitude to each mem- ber of the board for his part inimproving our school until it has become an outstanding insti- tution in the community. This year they learne; poster work, lettering, drawin;} design, painting, and art appreci§} ation. This general course serve} to acquaint students with tk major art fields. ‘Ahora si el mundo es chico'! --It's certainly a small world now! The Students in Mr. Steckler's Spanish class are meeting their South American neighbors through the pages of El Camino Real. The Romance languages may not seem very romantic to the pupils struggling through the in- tricacies of verb conjugations, but there is a real thrill in being able to translate smoothly a story written in a foreign language. ; SS Besides being helpful in later ee life, the study of Spanish is an in- teresting way to learn the history of the country and the customs of the people. Adios! The students in Mrs. Ford's Beginning Typing Class are trying hard to increase their speed and accuracy in typing. -LASSES _ The way to a man's heart is irough his stomach. If this tatement is true, the girls in Irs. Butler's home economics lasses have nothing to worry bout. Here the freshman girls re learning the art of serving an ttractive and appetizing salad thich they have prepared them- elves. Because mathematics is es- sential in many fields of endeavor, the Waterloo High School Mathe- matics Department, headed by Mr. Ford, offers the students a broad and integrated foundation inthis course. Thanks to the able instruction of Mr. Ford, the stu- dent finds himself more capable of handling involved equations and intricate graphs, as shown in the picture of Mr. Ford's Advanced Algebra Class. In the biology classes, head- ed by Mr. Berg, students become familiar with such terms as osmosis and photosynthesis, as they view the microscopic world of the amoeba. Through dissection, students acquire a knowledge of the intri- cate internal parts of animals. This knowledge helps them to bet- ter understand the functions of the human body. 1960 Rei Degree: B.S. | Colleges: Ball State Teachers' College Grades: First and Second Larry L. Dove Degree: B.S. It was a big day for all of us; although fearful of this new experi- ence, we soon grew to like it. Before long, we advancedtoJunior High. We were all intrigued by the vast upstairs. We all felt so big and proud of ourselves. Ourteachers in Junior High were Mr. Fries and Mr. McIntosh. At last, we finally became a part of the High School-- Freshmen! We gained quite a large number of new members from surrounding country schools. Our class now numbered sixty. Mr. Bourquin was our first high school sponsor. In our Sophomore year we purchased our class sweaters. We picked charcoal sweaters with pink let- ters. Also, we added quite a bitto our class treasury, withthe sale of Christmas cards. Mr. Johnson was our sponsor in our sophomore year. Our Junior year in school was a year with quite a bit of hard work. This year we had the Junior store. We worked very hard and realized a large profit. We also sold cookies this year. During our Junior year we purchased ourclass rings. We also produced our first class play, ''Nothing But Nonsense . We all had a lot of fun putting on our Junior play. At last we were finally Seniors! Mrs. Love and Mr. Ford helped us with our projects andthe making of plans forour Seniortrip. Wegaveour class play, ''Books and Crooks , which was a great success. Another big pro- ject during our senior year was the Homecoming Dance sponsored by our class. We enjoyed the dance, and it was abig thrillto haveasenior, Linda Muzzillo, elected Homecoming Queen. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our trip to Washington, D.C. and New York. Nowwe are all await- ing the big day when we will receive our diplomas and be onour way towardour goal in life. Yet we know that it will be a sad day, because we leave our friends and memories of Waterloo High School. Lynn Strock Linda Muzzillo HALLOWEEN PARTY The Waterloo Lions Club sponsors a Halloween Party every year for the students of the Waterloo School. It is heldinthe school gym on Halloween night with free popcorn, doughnuts, and cider for everyone. Activities for the evening include judging the costumes, money scrambles, sack races, pie eating contests, and a record hop for the older students. The students repay the Lions Club by not committing any vandalism during the Halloween season. If there is no vandalism the students also receive a one day vacation from school. The Lions Club Halloween party is one of the many memories we cherish from our school days at Waterloo. Wealsoled the Halloween par- ade at Halloween time. The concert season began after the marching season was over. The band played at all the home basketball games and presented a very fine Christ- mas program at Yule time. In February the solo and ensemble contest was held at Fort Wayne. The bandsmen fared very well this year. After the solo and ensemble contest the hard work began--pre- paring for the concert band contest held at Angola. The annual Spring Concert was presented at the school gymnasium on April 23. T-E-A-M Team! Team! Team! This was oneof the many yells that bounced off the walls of the Waterloo High School gym as the newly formed Cheering Block spurred the Wildcats on to victory. The group of 68 spirited young Waterloo fans, executed with a great deal of finesse, the yells and maneuvers originated by our energetic cheerleaders, Carol Till, Marsha Hodges, Linda Muzzillo, Linda Wallace, Mavis Sutton, Alice Lockwood, Dave Hill and their sponsor, Mrs. Evelyn Ford. During the basketball season, the cheering block practiced every Friday morning at 8:15. During the sessions the new cheers were demonstrated by the cheerleaders and practiced by the block. The cheering block is composed of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The seventh and eighth graders must serve a year ortwoinan apprentice or substitute role. In this manner, the younger students gain experience for their ensuing years in high school. During the games, the block members wear white blouses.or shirts, black gloves, and dark skirts or trousers. Sharon Toneman held the only office in the cheering block, that of secretary. In its first year, our cheering block added much enthusiasm and eye-appeal to our basketball games. Coach Bourquin and the basketball players appreciate their efforts and look forward to their next sea- son with the Cheering Block. 47 WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL COACHES Standing, Coach Richard Bourquin; Seated left to right, Eighth Grade Coach, Ned McIntosh; Seventh Grade Basketball Coach and Cross Country Coach, Larry Dove; Freshman Coach, Ronnie Vaughn; Back Row, As- sistant Coach, Bruce Gurtner. : Coach Richard Bourquin has been head coach of Waterloo Athletics for six years. GROWTH OF WATERLOO KINDERGARTEN The Waterloo Public Kindergarten was started in 1952 with only one session meeting daily in the Waterloo Church of Christ. The first year there were only 25 children. Their teacher was Mrs. Auckland, who taught fortwo years. It wasthen sponsored by the parents, but since January, 1959, the Waterloo Public School System has taken over its operation. Mrs. Nice is now the teacher and has been teaching the kindergarten for the past six years. She has also been a Y-Teen mother for the past three years. She was born.on Prince Edward Island in Canada and attended the Prince of Wales College there. After moving to the United States in 1941, she attended Butler University and the Arthur Jordan Conservatory. Mr. and Mrs. Nice moved to Waterloo in 1951, and she became a citizen in 1952. There are now 2 classes each day, andthis yearthere are 48 children enrolled. The first class is from 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. with the secondclass beginning at 1:00 p.m. and lasting until 3:30 p.m. The general objectives of the kindergarten are to help the children adjust from the home to a larger social group; to develop good citizenship, health, and safety; toteachthem to be independent and respect the rights of others; and to develop the abilities of each child. Many of the things that they learn for later school life are how to count to one hundred, the alphabet, to know and distinquish the different colors, and to act out stories. They also learn how to print their names and keep rhythm to music. Theterm kindergarten was an excellent choice. It isaplace where the children grow mentally and socially through’play, laughter, and gaiety. 69 P.T.A.
