THE ROSEBUD OF 1957 EDITED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957 WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL WATERLOO, INDIANA Dedication We, the Seniors of '57, dedicate this ROSE- BUD to the memory of the late town marshal, Willard Knott, who was known by all as one who rendered his services for the youth of the co mmunity. Theme In the ROSEBUD OF 1957 we hope we succeed in showing our readers that to us our high school days have meant more than just hard work. We planned this year's book to give you, the reader, a complete idea of the joys and difficulties we have experienced. | At the same time we wish to fold into this book reminders that will bring memories to each of us of our days at Waterloo High School. We seniors chose as our theme--hands. An inspiring message can be found in hands. The hands of the mother tell a story of love for her child; the hands of the teacher tell a story of patience and under- standing. Although their hands are very busy, we hope our parents and teachers find pleasures in their toiling hands. We, too, through twelve years of school have witnessed the fruits of toiling hands. Realizing the truth in the sayings many hands make light work and “hand and mind can use the tools, we have ventured forth this year to put forth a ROSEBUD of which we may be proud. School Board a. As the years passed we met many new teachers until finally we were in junior high. The next two years were very eventful and were climaxed on the night of eighth grade graduation. The next September we entered high school. We had the largest freshmen class yet--sixty-three, and Mr. Leslie was our sponsor. Our sophomore year we had Mr. Berg as sponsor. He guided us very successfully through our card sales and the buying of our class sweaters. The halls were decked out in the powder blue and white of the sophomore class. Mr. Ford was our sponsor during our junior year. With Sally Kelley and Carolyn Hovarter as managers of the concession stand, we saw an increase in our treasury. Also, we sold cookies, had a paper drive, bake sales, and sponsored a record hop. Then to make the year just right, we got our class rings. Our senior sponsor, Mr. Dove, safely guided us through our magazine sales and many paper drives. The annual staff produced the yearbook at a profit and really set us on the right way to Washington, DC. Graduation night found twenty of the original thirty-six classmates, whom we had drawn from many places, receiving diplomas. Although our school days at Waterloo are behind us now, fond memories of the faculty, underclassmen and classmates will remain with each and every one of us. Class Poem It was in the year '38 or ‘39. When our parents, yours and mine, Received a bundle sent from heaven That became the class of ‘57. Two years ago Carole found her spark; I believe it's a cadet by the name of Park. Jerry B. says love simply cannot wait; He's out every night on some new date. Judy Tarney lives in town, I'm here to say No one is sad when she is gay; Susan Buss, a quiet lass, Has never been known to cut up in class. Donn L. on the other hand you'll find Drives some teachers clean out of their minds. Rosalie, who hails from a farm, Knows a little work will do no harm. Neal, who goes by the name of Winky Dink. Is a real artist, too, we think. Carl is nice and also very quiet, But get him alone, and he’s really a riot. Janet has her eye on a guy, And we know she'll get him by and by. David thinks he's a real Don Juan; We hear he wants to wield a baton. Crooksy thinks a nurse she'll be; You think so, too? Well, wait and see. Glo ria, for some unknown reason, Has her mind on a guy named “Tarzan.” Doug is keen with a good disposition, Who from school should seek readmission. Carolyn H. has her hooks on Jim, And he's already bowing to her every whim. The class president, a basketball star? Jerry Myers, naturally; he's way above par. Nick, who's interested in a Garrett lass, Is always ready to answer in class. Dike has been here every day; It seems he just can't stay away. Carmon is new to us this year; In the band his cornet you can hear. Sue gets along with all the gents; You, too, can be a blonde for forty-nine cents! Ruth is a worker we all know, And in her car she doesn't go slow. Judy D. is in love and to me that's not silly; She's going to get married to a guy named Dilley. Dwight Z. is quiet--you can never hear a peep Because most of the time he's behind a book asleep. Sally is our brain, our only one? She never stops ‘til the job is done. Size is no object, our Shirley Shull knows; She's hypnotized Dave clear down to his toes. Carol N. does nothing but study in school And keep her eye on Barry Cool. Jack is quiet and quite a scholar, But never underestimate a quiet man's power. Carolyn Wiecht likes to have herself some times, Gets home just in time to hear the morning chimes. Patty M. and Jack are on their way to marriage; Soon they'll be off in Jack's new carriage. Vada, we know, is a hard-working gal, And from Garrett she's found herself many a pal. Janice has moved to the west side of town, And in the class play she brought the roof down. Don G. says farming is his future to be; What will his steady say: Let's wait and see. ‘Darlene, who is so very neat, Is looking for a guy who is tall, dark, and sweet. Martha, we know, is sure to find Sonteone who will change her mind. Lowell, right now, is serious about Dorothy; And someday, she his wife may be. Sherry is someone of whom we're mighty proud, Especially when she twirls before a crowd. Bob is for hot rods like bees are for honey; Someday off those hot rods he'll be making money Linda P. is in love with Doug, But she hates all Fords that go chug-chug. John doesn't care for books and such But likes his horses very much. Ruth K. came this year from Ashley And happy with the change she seems to be. Patty P. is college bound; A prettier girl cannot be found. Herb L. now is altar bound, Then to an occupation that is sound. Laura, who is so very bashful, Has many things for which to be thankful. Gary hopes to have the fame Of someday changing Lela's name. Bill P. gives to lots of girls a line; And from what we've heard, he does just fine. Eric's handy with nail and hammer. Someday he'll find a girl and marry her. We've tried to show in these short lines Just what can be on our classmates’ minds. We hope you'll overlook all our mistakes And realize how much work a class poem takes. Now we're only seniors without talent or fame; But just for your information, here are our names -- -Donna Jean Myers and Bill Hornthrop The Class Prophecy DIARY OF SUE TILL DECEMBER 31, 1964 I was just reminiscing about my classmates and what they are now doing. Patty Piatek received her medical degree from Indiana University and is now a doctor. Sharon Crooks, Donna Myers, Laura Wagner, and Carol Nelson are all nurses. They have been given the name Fabulous Four because they have saved so many lives. I remember how Bob Wells loved old hot rods. Well, he threw together an old clunker that went two hundred miles an hour. Dike Grate tied it out on the highway by out-running four state troopers; he is now spending the rest of his life in jail. Speaking of state troopers, Jerry Boman has been made super- intendent of the Indiana State Police Force. His motto is If you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em. Carole Warner has married that sailor and travels the world with him. By the way, Douglas Colbart is now an admiral in the Navy. Darlene Makovicka and Linda Pinkerton are now secretaries. Darlene's dream of working in the Pentagon came true. Linda is just working and waiting for Admiral Colbart. A dream that really came true was that of Lowell Stuckey. He led his beloved Dodgers to their fourth straight series win this fall. Judy Tarney's dream came true also. She received her degree from Michigan State and is now a world-famous cat veterinarian. Some of my classmates have been married. Judy Duncan married her true love, David Dilley, and is raising little Dilleys. Patty Miller is now happily married to Jack. Herbie Leins, now married, runs a dry cleaning shop in Singapore. The winner of the boxing match I saw on television last night was David Rocky Dunn; I remember how he loved to fight in high school. The next program I saw was called Snooty Hoot's Variety Hour. The master of ceremoines was the delightful, hilarious Nick Hoot. The guest comedienne was Janice Medsker. She won fame for her antics by performing for the Queen of England. Sally Kelley, while attending U.C.L.A., knew so much more than the professors that she is now head professor. Last night's newspaper headlines stated that F.B.1. agents Neal Hodges and Eric Kuykendall had cap- tured that master mind of that counterfeiting ring. He was none other than Donn Lowman. Rumor has it that Ruth Wiggins and Gloria Grieser were counterfieters, too Susan Buss and Carolyn Hovarter are teaching. They were the winners of last year's Teachers of the Year award. John Stahl's horse, Flaming Hoosier, won the Kentucky Derby. I understand that Gary Hire was the trainer. Oh yes, the beautiful movie queen Shirley Shull attended the Derby. The magazine article on the Three Cronies was very enlightening. It seems they are Vada Mc- Dougall, Martha McBride, and Janet Bergstrom. They own the Golden Hawk gambling casino in Las Vegas. Sherry Smith won the title of Miss Baton Twirler. She now twirls throughout the world. There is some question as to where Don Gurtner and Bill Horntrop got all their money. Some pecple think it came from a bank robbery. Anyway, they are surely ladies’ men. Since Carolyn Weicht always loved to travel and to find excitement, she talked Ruth Ketel and Rosalie Harding into going to deep, dark India with her. They have discovered a new race of people. The richest man in the world is Carl Cobbs. He discovered platinum in Wyoming. Bill Parkinson lost all his money by gambling so he is working on the Siberian tumpike. Dwight Zerkle is his slave-driving boss. I guess Jerry Myers is still digging spuds. I hear he even sleeps with potatoes. The secret service finally caught tax-evader Jack Overmeyer. No wonder he wanted to be Attorney General. Carmon Wenger managed Rockefeller's businesses for two years. He now has all that money. Beta Club The Reta Club is a national organization formed by high school students who are outstanding in scholarship, leadership, character, and service to their schools and communities. The Waterloo High School chapter was in- stalled a year ago in rites conducted by the Riverdale Beta Club. Our chapter has the distinction of being the northern-most Beta Chapter in the United States. Membership is restricted to students of good character who maintain at least a B average in all academic sub- jects. This year Beta Club projects have included formula- tion of By-laws, participation in work days and a dance to raise money, attendance at the state convention with Mrs. Donald Myers as chaperone, and the compilation and posting of the honor roll as a service project for the school. The group's main purposes are to foster Christian lives and to encourage fellowship among the girls of high school age. This year the Y-Teens went Christmas caroling, conducted a porch -light collection for the March of Dimes, sold chocolate bars to send delegates to the Mid-winter Conference, and sponsored an all- school talent show. In February a group of Y-Teens accompanied by Mrs. Love, club sponsor, traveled by train to Chicago for a sight-seeing tour and a weekend climaxed by their participation in the regional conference at Gary. Six mothers elected by the members assist the group with their work, The current Y-Teen mothers are Mrs. Fred Miller, Mrs. Clay- ton Warner, Mrs. Clayton Pontius, Mrs. Ernest Wallace, Mrs. Guy Christlieb, and Mrs. Charles Smith. The Photo Club was usually blamed for many of the odd pictures that turned up throughout the year. On this trip we enjoyed three days of camp- ing in the state park. Two of our members along with Mr. Berg and other chapters in the county enjoyed a week of camping in the northern part of Canada. We are also proud to have two candidates for the Hoosier Farmers Degree this year. They are Donald Gurtner and John Stahl. Other activities this year were farming about fifteen acres of ground, chapter pest contest, sale of variety garden seeds, and entrance of teams in the county judging contest. Another activity of great interest to us is our annual Father and Son Banquet. This year we give awards to the adult who has given us the most help during the year. Also awards are presented to the chapter's Star Farmer and Star Greenhand., The officers for this past year have been Jerry Myers, president; Richard Korff, vice-president; Donald Gurtner, sec- retary; Lyle Bowers, treasurer; Lowell Stuckey, reporter; Jerry Boman, sentinel. Marching Band Drum Major The Senior Band started off a busy season last summer when Mr. Reed took over the organization for the usual Concerts in the Park. Besides these concerts, the band performed many times at the Water- loo Centennial; traveled to Van Wert, Ohio; for the Peony Festival, Sharon Smith and marched in the Mermaid Festival Parade at North Webster, In- diana. Plenty ot work was in store for the band during the Auburn Fair, and this was immediately followed by the State Marching Con- test. After marching in the Halloween Parade, the band entered the basketball season with five half-time shows. One of these shows was repeated when the band took a very successful trip to the Fremont game. The band really sparkled this year with their new set of plumes and a complete rank of sparkling gold drums. Our thanks go to the Band Parents Club. Twenty-six entries in the solo and ensemble contest launched the bands’ concert season. The musical year wound up with the annual Spring Concert.” This page sponsored by WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL BAND. 53 Chorus FIRST ROW: Rebecca Sebert, Merrilee McLaughlin, Janet Bergstrom, Sharon Crooks, Carolyn Weicht, Vada McDougall, Laura Wagner, Sally Kelley, Barbara Souder, Mr. Workman.
