Gridiron Teom Eorns Waterloo at Skaneateles. The lndian's gridiron team gave many a pleasant surprise, ending their season with a 3-5 record which all took pride in. The team consisted mostly of Rookies except for Greg Verone and Gary DeWaIl. Every effort was put forth by the tribe be- cause they knew they faced a tough season all the way around. With the exceptional coaching of Mr. Schwarze, head coach, Mr. Anderson, line coach and Mr. Courtney, end coach, every week improvement was evident. The Indians fearlessly stood up to every team -and played a tough 48 minutes in each game. Win or lose, the Waterloo Indians gained the re- spect of every team they played. Higdon on the tackle. Mr. Schwarze, a graduate of S.U.N.Y. at Cortland, came to Waterloo from a teaching position on Long Island. He took the job of Indian Head Coach for the 1970 season, drilling for technique and execution. By the end of the sea- ll son, a rookie team had been molded into an Orange Machine. The Agony of Defeat. - M D As the Waterloo Indians huddled before their last game of the season on November 7, they fully realized the potential of the 7-O opponent they were about to challenge. The final score of 44-8 conveyed the . Blue Devils' experienced skill, but not the Indians' incessant drive. Revenge in '71 Indians with a first down l Stopped at line of scrimmage. On November 7, 1970, 13 seniors played their last football game for Waterloo. In that arch-rival clash, our seniors suffered defeat, but not in all entirety. They surprised everyone with a record perhaps not of quantity but surely of quality. Teamwork. Coach Giovannini and Coach Bishop constructed a team consisting mainly of Freshmen into a working crew. The early weeks of football were primarily technique. The boys did their best and produced a record that promises a skilled team for next season. Row 1:C. Stein, S. Bonacci, S. Arichello, J. Russ, D. Persistence and perfection, the two traits preached by lVlr. Dorf, the new yearbook advisor, were practiced among the staff fluently. By such exertion on the part of most everyone a winning formula was compiled-adding potential, sub- T tracting doubt, and multiplying 1 ideas-all equalling the very pages of this book. True recogni- tion of the finished product of the 1971 Skoi-Yase Yearbook Staff will be evident in the years to come when many of you will again skim the 1971 Skoi-Yase and re- turn tothe days of your youth. Even without new uni- forms, their half time show at the Mynderse game was effective, resulting from hours of practice and IVlr. Schmidt's irreplaceable direction. A pop con- cert, a spring concert, a performing tour, the Gor- ham Pageant of Bands and the North Syracuse competition are the tasks to be undertaken by the band in 1971. Twirlers 82 The Best of the Best Varsity Ensemble Mrs. Dunn and the members of ensemble spend hours out- side of chorus preparing diffi- cult numbers. At every concert, ensemble has provided that ex- tra something for musically- minded audiences. The Stage Band, a newly formed organization, not only has entertained students at Wa- terloo, but also has performed for North Rose students. Under the direction of Mr. Schmidt their potential has progressed from that of an average high school group to that of a pol- ished dance band. l'fK15f::.wf:'ffl7.ff3f'.tf-'f'.ffif: fig: if -S ' H I! 3952- ' - ' S ..:, f -- 14' ,gzszzm f.t,,+,,1-ff- f tw: :L-'xii-1215 ,gzfggj - A iw - '- -: rrl- Q3 A f ' . 7 z:,, :fin -..:.S,.::: -A I-fI:'15: ,.:55 F1 f9V'T' 'J' L 5-'ii' ' Yiiufi?-ww' , - ' 1 ' 5, . .t , , .,.. , . , t, H , .... 1. .. gn , .: . . .M ,- . , . ---Q J Ww w ,V 5 FS 3 1 - - egatgzlgg-.ffl-iihslfig 2:2 ii ,. . ig . ,..z.,. ...,.. -3 Q.. if 1, ,.:Q,: .3twet.::g?. gf? it ,Z I it , tg , , ' - g-:x . w,,-. sg rsrwgga-, E -' :, ,, fyvgggs,-t if i t . : 5 Row 1: G. Fiorelli From their debut into high school as the first junior high freshman class, to their senior year, the 167 members of the class of 1971 have re- markably survived all trials and thrived with their various talents. Within their year of 1971, they completed their final projects-a float for home- coming, winning first prize in the competition, and the sale of tee shirts which aided in financ- ing the Senior Ball. The Class of 1971 owes its very existence to the guidance of lVlrs. Crenner and lVIr. Dunn and hopes that they received much satisfaction from their roles as class advisors. mei ' ...., :,.,....,... -- 2 ,.. Vw YYYYY , .. ,,,,, , - I 5 E 2 E s f 5 S E 2 E E i Y ,.., - ........, -., W. EYXU YF? r-ifw lx K, Q X E Q5 yi! kxj juff l I if W if X fm SHOULD YOU GO TO GOULD'S AFTER HIGH SCHOOL . . AFTER COLLEGE? Since 1874, time of the above engraving, more young men in Waterloo probably graduated to Goulds than graduated from high school. Fortunately, for both education and Goulds, things have changed. Both have grown enormously. Today the opportunities for education, both high school and college, are greater than ever before. The demands on the students, how- ever, are growing more intense. There is more com- petition. Same with pump companies. Some keep growing, others are drop-outs. Back in 1874, for ex- ample, there were four other pump companies in Sene- ca Falls. They're all long gone. We have some com- petitors, today, who are on shaky ground. They haven't done their homework, i.e., no new products, new ap- proaches to markets, etc. Success in schooling, suc- cess in pump manufacturing, both are the product of determined, skilled, enlightened people. We have them at Goulds Pumps, Inc., and we're proud that a great number of our key people are Waterloo Central graduates. Many are those who have gone on to col- lege and then returned to Waterloo and to Goulds. These illustrations show the change in Goulds plant facilities in the past 90 years. But Goulds is moving faster than that. In the past 10 years sales have more than doubled. To keep growing we need more good people to grow with. Consider Goulds as a good place to work after high school or college. established in 1848 GOULD'S PUIVIPS, INC. Where all the sports hang out Riverview Plaza Seneca Falls, N.Y Do ou have to give up our identi to make it in a big corporation? You've heardthestories: One big corporation forbids you to wearanything butwhite shirts. Anothersaysitwantsyou to be crea- tive -and gives you a 4-pound rule book telling you exactly howto do it. Yet another doesn't want you to buy a more expensive car than your boss because it vvouldn't look right . ls this really happening in American business? Have-companies become so rigid and fossilized that they're scared of people who don'ttitthe norm ? Not this company. Weare nothungupontrivia likethat. The advances General Telephone 84 Electronics has made didn't come from people hiding behind organization chartsand smilingatthe righttime. They came from people who used theirbrains: People who revolutionized picture- taking with the Sylvania flashcube, E SVLVHMAEE, who developed the high-energy liquid laser, who came up with the sharpest color TV picture in the world, who pio- neered instant electronic stock market quotations, and so on. We are looking for more people like this-people who aren't afraid to stand up and try themselves out. We are an equal opportunity em- ployer: All you need to make it with us is a good head on your shoulders. Although they didn't place, the band showed a good effort. The Color Guard placed third in a close competition. ON THE LINE THIRD PLACE ON THE MARCH FOCUS ON SPORTS WRESTLING: Posting a 6-7 won- lost record, this year's wrestling team finished the season in fifth place in league competition. Se- nior Tom Pearce, who suffered only one defeat, was Waterloois lone league champion. The team's most valuable wrestler also distinguished himself in the Section 5 tourney in Corning. Junior Tim LaBelle, who also lost only one league match, was the most improved wrestler. Ju- nior Dave VanNostrand, 95, and Pearce each received trophies for scoring the most pins. The prospects for next year's team are encouraging as only two varsity starters will graduate. Se- nior John Pettingill, the team's leading rifleman, received the MVP award. Other top scorers were Senior Jack Kuney and Sophomore John Breese. BASKETBALL: Although they finished the year with a 9-9 rec- ord, the season was encourag- ing as the team reached the .500 plateau for the first time in several years. Sparked by Se- nior Jim Contant and Junior Steve Schweitz, the Indians lost several games by one or two baskets. In sectional play the team just missed advancing to the second round, losing to Spencerport 49-45 in the last few seconds. Schweitz, one of the league's top scorers, was chosen as the MVP. After a winless sea- son two years ago in class A, they won 16 last year in class B. This year they rebounded for an 11-59 record. Marty Olschew- ske, Tom Paradise, Don Covert, and Terry and Larry Spiwak led the team to its most improved season. The most improved player award went to Senior Marty Olschewske, and Gary Seifert received the Outstanding Freshman award. TRACK: After winning only one track meet in the last three years, the team defeated three teams this season. Working with a squad of 50 members, Coach Morse has started the rebuild- ing road to a championship team. Particularly strong in the distance events, the Indians al- ways made it an exciting meet. Steve DiCicco, who copped the league championship, and Jim Pierson, who placed second, re- peatedly gave top performances in the 2 mile and 440 respec- tively. Jim Waters received the outstanding track award and Roger Ridley received the best in field award. The future looks good as only seven seniors will graduate. LACROSSE: In their first year in the Upstate Lacrosse League and only their third year as a team, Waterloo distinguished itself as a team to watch out for. They sur- prised everyone by posting a 9-6 record. Led by high-scoring Bob Craig, Pete Vacca and Calvin Utzman, the Indians provided plenty of action in their games. Senior Craig on midfield was elected as the MVP, and senior Steve Bourne, who played goal, was elected the top defensive player. Another senior, Mike French, was chosen as the most improved player. With as many key players returning, next year's team should continue Waterloo's winning ways. BASEBALL: A I t h o u g h they ended the season with an im- pressive 10-5 record, the base- ball team failed to capture the Wayne-Finger Lakes champion- ship as well as a sectional berth, when they lost the last game of the season to Penn Yan and a play-off game to Mynderse. However, next year the Indians should be a major contender as thirteen players will return. Ju- nior Chuck Pratz, with a 1.38 ERA, was the team's leading pitcher. Junior Vic DiJohn was the leading hitter with a .372 average and 11 RBl's, and ju- nior Bob Didsbury was named the MVP. As it was last year, only Dundee was able to top the Indians. Led by three se- niors, Ron Rizzo, Marty Olschew- ske, and Pete Vacca, the team made Coach Giovaninni's first year an enjoyable one. The team also produced some great indi- vidual efforts. Three team mem- bers, Rizzo, Olschewske and sophomore Scott Phillips ad- vanced to the finals of the New York State Junior Boys divisional championships. Phillips placed twenty-first in the boys 15 and under division. Marty Olschewske placed seventeenth in the boys handicap division. Ron Rizzo, in the boys scratch divisional cham- pionships at Albany, placed first. Bowling a 561 -545-593 series, his 1699 total was good enough to earn him the championship.
