WF The class of l942 has chosen patriotism as the theme for this issue of the Skoi-Yase. E It is not my purpose to define, or to demand patriotism for the students of Hfaterloo High School. It can be truly stated that the response of the students to our war with the Axis has been thoroughly satisfactory. It is not necessary to excite the students to :rwjllingness to sacrifice or contrib- ute to our war effort. They have been ready andfaxgixious to do all in their power. One phase of preparation has been neglectedffftis my purpose to bring home to the Students of Hfaterloo High School the importance of personal integrity and personal high character. A nation's character is the sum of the traits of its citizens. After the war the United States will assume world leadership. She must, if only to prevent the recurrence of the present flaming fiasco. Our country will find responsibilities of world leadership more demanding than military adventure. XVe will fail, and fail miserably, in the post war world, unless our citizens measure up, in total, to the high standards so necessary in any truly great leader. It is, therefore, the primary task of the class of lf?-12. to so develop to so train themselves, that they will not be found wanting when their country calls upon them lo bear part of the responsibility of keeping world order and world decency a living and worthwhile thing.
