The victors unleashed a new star in wingback Kerry Keating, as he streaked to two brilliant touchdowns. Waterford then smashed a green Southfield 11 25-0, October 3, as Kerry Keating displayed brilliant broken-field running on three occasions. Jack Fear -bulled his way to two markers while Keating accounted for a six-pointer on a 49-yard sprint. October 10 saw Waterford and Walled Lake battle to a scoreless tie but the Skippers had a 38-yard score called back, that by Keating. In a night contest, Waterford was downed by Keego Harbor, 13-6, as the Skippers could manage only one marker, Kerry Keating's 83-yard kick-off return in the second quarter. 9 NJ me QQ' - V w-5, '1 . lki. Jack Fear tallied twice for the losers. When Waterford and Lincoln Van Dyke tangled on October 31, fans saw the highest scoring contest of the season. Final score put the Skippers on top, 32-19. Line crasher Jack Fear chalked up three T.D.'s while speedy Kerry Keating notched two six-pointers. Kerry Keating's beautiful 39-yard end zone sprint was the lone tally for Waterford as they played the best game of the year in losing to Birmingham, 14-6. Owosso traveled to Waterford on November 14 and left the field with a 14-'7 decision under their belts. Although ending the season with a 3-4-1 record, this was undoubtedly the schoo1's finest grid campaign in history. Ron Kopicko, outstanding Skipper tackle who had 55 tackles this year, and Kerry Keating gained honorable mention on the All-State team besides being on the All-Conference first team. Burly Jack Fear led the team in point production with 48 while Keating followed with 42. 94 X The Waterford Township reserves opened the 1952 campaign September 30 against a strong Berkley ll and left the field with a 19-13 victory under their belts. Jerry Gaultney's 45-yard T.D. sprint on a pass interception broke a 13-13 tie to cinch the victory. On October 8, the reserves traveled to Walled Lake to meet the junior Vikings in a night tilt. Waterford could not get a strong offense moving at any time during the scrap but boasted a strong defensive unit which played brilliantly and left the gridiron with a hard- fought 0-0 tie. Waterford's strong defense again held opposition scoreless but received tremendous help from the offensive group and went on to smash Southfield's reserves 38-0, October 14. Dick Goyette, Skipper scatback, tallied twice, but Dave Larkin's 53-yard bullrush to pay dirt stole the show. The local Jayvees journeyed to Farmington October 23 and squeaked out a 6-0 victory over the Falcons. Speedy halfback Dave Kerr, snagged a Farmington aerial and sprinted down the sidelines 24 yards for the game's only marker. This was the second time this season that an intercepted pass was the margin of victory for our fine reserves. The local M-59ers concluded the season with a 13-'7 victory over a capable Lake Orion squad on the losers' field to mark the first time in the school's history that a football te am had been undefeated. Dave Larkin and Dick Goyette each tallied to give the Skippers their final win. Special recognition should be given to Coaches Ashley, Good, and Cosgro, who tutored the squad to its highly successful season. 5-aw ' N' VARSITY SCORES H. S. - 25 Cranbrook H. S. - 25 Southfield H. Wolves' Tom Bullen and Dick Tims, both tied for high point honors with 12. The Skippers then dropped a tough 50-44 decision to Walled Lake. The contest was even, 42-42, at the end of four stanzas and thus went into an overtime where the Waterford downfall came. Journeying to Milford, the localites lost number three, 76-60, in a high scoring con- test. Rex Egres and Bob Jacober tallied 17 markers each in pacing the losers. Southfield threw a tight zone defense against the Ashleymen and had a comparatively easy time in whipping the Skippers, 48-29. Tims was high for the losers with 11 but Blue Jay's Edwards took game honors with 26 tallies. Traveling to Birmingham, the M-59ers dropped theirfifth straight, 59-35, to the Maples. Gordie Mutch was high scorer for the victors with 17 markers while sophomore Bob Jacober had 12 for the losers. Next the Ashleyites trooped to Farmington and were defeated, 51-34, in the foreign gym. Rex Egres was a bright spot in the Skipper offense as he netted 10 points from pivot. Tims was right behind with 9. Avondale's fast breaking quintet proved to be too much for the Waterfordites as they tromped the Skippers 64-40. Neverthless, Bob Jacober set- a new school scoring mark as he swished 25 tallies. The Ashleymen next were edged, 50-41, by Berkley on the winners' home court. The tilt was close and thrilling throughout with Bob Jacober pacing the Skippers with a 13-point sum. Dick Tims meshed 12. In a return engagement, the localites were downed by Milford, 57-33, as.the Red- skins completely outclassed Waldo Ashley's crew. Baker, of the winners, was high with 21 markers. Keego Harbor paraded to Waterford's spacious gym and beat the Skippers, 47-37. Though losing, sophomore Bob Jacober cupped game honors as he netted 16. Waterford threw a scare into Walled Lake as they again were defeated, 67-53. The Walled Lake Institute had a 6-point lead with two minutes remaining in the fourth stanza. Then the winners' Ligon, who netted 25 tallies, swished three straight buckets to decide the contest. The Skippers came closest to victory number one as the Southfield Blue Jays edged the local club, 42-39. Waterford's star, Bob Jacober, was ill which definitely hampered the Ashleyites' hopes. Forward Dick Tims swished nine points. Farmington walloped the local lads again, 56-37. Waterford performed strongly dur- ing the first half but wilted in the final two stanzas. Jacober's 13 were high for the losers. Walt Ashley's squad finally reached its peak as they edged Avondale, 57-52, in a hair raising contest. Bob Jacober hit 25 again for the second time, but against this club, and Dick Tims threw 17 markers in. Berkley's Bears sank Waterford again,55-39, as the Skippers played their last game of the present campaign. Jacober was high with 16. Ending the regular season in a high scoring duel, Waterford was beaten by Keego Harbor, 74-65, in the winners' compact gym. Jacober hit 25 once again with Dick Tims netting 16. In the annual tournament classic, East Detroit had a field day against the Skippers as they coasted to a 69-37 win. Ron Kramer of the winners put on a beautiful exhibition as he garnered 24 tallies. Things definitely look brighter for Ashley's team next year as they don't lose a player because of graduation. High scorer for the hard-luck quintet was Bob Jacober with 220 points. Dick Tims accumulated 164 markers to place right behind Bob. Ashley did a fine job in directly the inexperienced crew. 100 L-. 1 . I A-..-... ,....
