Margaret Oliver Glee Club Advisor of Club Walter Marland Basketball With only one veteran, Jupe Church, returning from last year's team. Coach Morris faced a tremendous job of rebuilding. A long training season enabled one of the most finely conditioned teams that ever wore the Red and White to take the floor in the initial contest. In this, and ensuing games, Waterford literally ran their opponents into the boards. The long training period produced dividends, as witnessed by their record of eleven wins and five losses. Four of these five losses were decided by the slender margin of 4 points. Lettermen this past season were Captain Church, Ed. Lawlor, Ty Shepard, Chris Sorenson, Dan Paternianni, Harry Kirker, Tub” Thompson, Jew O'Rourke, and AI Falconi. As the nucleus for next years' team Coach Morris will have Church, Kirker, and Falconi. Soccer Waterford finally clinched the championship of its district after having been counted out, not by games, but on paper for two successive years. The Waterford booters tasted defeat but once in league play, and that at the hands of a third place team. However, our play was not confined to league games. We played, and defeated, many other teams from Northeastern New York. Draper, credited as being the most clever and powerful team on the entire Eastern Seaboard, met and bettered us twice. Waterford went on, after this pair of setbacks, and fought to bring in the exceptional record of nine wins, three losses, and three ties. The boys that wore the colors of our school so successfully were: Ed Lawlor, Moe McGrievey, Bud Pitcher, Joe Scarchilli, Dan Patemianni, Quito Ronesi, Naz Ascenzi, Shorty Baker, Ed Catallo, A1 Pearson, Mouse Daignault, Harry Kirker. Tony Cicchenelli and Chris Sorenson. Cross Country Comparing this season's record to the exceptionally high standards of previous years is hardly fair. Although we tasted deleat twice, we emerged victorious three times. With our three wins and two losses. Waterford still was the cream of the crop of local Hill and Dalers. Bill Dooley, Captain Falcone, Red Clement, Joe Wright, Jew O'Rourke, Irv. McEnroe, Phil Marino, Tom Hawley, Jim Casscello, Prof. Ryan, Pete Medick, and Leo Rosbozom carried the Red and White over the fields. An undefeated season is not an impossibility next year, when one con- siders that only O'Rourke and Wright will be lost through graduation. Bowling Waterford lost the District Championship they had held lor six consecutive seasons. The narrow margin ol one game decided to whom the cup would be awarded. Even in defeat Waterford was the outstanding team in the area. Their high single of 1052, and high triple of 2898 was an all time high for local high schools. The season record was 23 games won, and 7 lost. Promi- nent bowlers still are amazed at what the high school youths accomplished. The answer lies in the arms of Alex Pearson, Charley Howland, Joe Forchilli, Mike Batto, Mouse Daignault, and Walt Reynolds; who all will return next year to assure a new cup for W. H. S.
