The, Neuh . . . CRASH OF ’87 .. . On Monday, October 19, the Dow Jones averages plunged 508 points amid pan- icky selling. This was far worse than the Crash of 1929, and led to a great deal of confusion on world markets for the next couple of months. The market continued to fluctuate leaving investers and brokers with few answers to the dilemma. Top Celebrities of 1987 were (from top left to right): Tom Cruise of the movie Top Gun ; the Lincoln Memorial gets a complete cleaning; Bono, of the rock band U2; ALF, star of one of the hottest TV shows; Matt Frewer (also known as Max Headroom); Madonna as seen on a poster from her latest film; and actor Charlie Sheen. The 1987 World Series lasted 7 games. Won by the Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3 over the St. Louis Cardinals, each team won only in their home sta- dium. Wisconsin state legisla- ture worked to pass a man- datory seat belt law for the state. Early in the year rural interstates permitted a speed limit of 65 mph. As of Janu- ary 1, 1988, the state's drunk driving laws became even tougher, making Wisconsin one of the leaders in hard- line dealing with drunk dri- vers. The Rescue of Little Jessica McClure . . . On Octo- ber 14, 1987, 18-month old Jessica McClure slipped into an abandoned well shaft while playing with four other toddlers at a day-care center in her home town of Mid- land, Texas. The nation watched and prayed throughout the child's 58-hour ordeal. The little girl’s life was saved by the heroic efforts of many community volunteers. The NFL players union went on strike after week two of the regular season of play. Team owners hired replacement teams to continue the season while negotiations continued. The union agreed to return to play without a final settlement after three weeks. For those hired as replacement players, it was the chance of a lifetime” to be able to play in the NFL. Bork Nomination Defeated . . . President Reagan's nomination of Robert Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court was soundly defeated by the Senate after week's of lobbying by the President and those opposed to the nomination. CwiMtit [zMmU 3
