On Monday, October 19, the Dow Jones averages plunged 508 points amid pan- icky selling. This was far worse than the Crash of 1929, and led to a great deal of confusion on world markets for the next couple of months. The market continued to fluctuate leaving investers and brokers with few answers to the dilemma. Top Celebrities of 1987 were (from top left to right): Tom Cruise of the movie Top Gun ; the Lincoln Memorial gets a complete cleaning; Bono, of the rock band U2; ALF, star of one of the hottest TV shows; Matt Frewer (also known as Max Headroom); Madonna as seen on a poster from her latest film; and actor Charlie Sheen. The 1987 World Series lasted 7 games. Won by the Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3 over the St. Louis Cardinals, each team won only in their home sta- dium. Wisconsin state legisla- ture worked to pass a man- datory seat belt law for the state. Early in the year rural interstates permitted a speed limit of 65 mph. As of Janu- ary 1, 1988, the state's drunk driving laws became even tougher, making Wisconsin one of the leaders in hard- line dealing with drunk dri- vers. The Rescue of Little Jessica McClure . . . On Octo- ber 14, 1987, 18-month old Jessica McClure slipped into an abandoned well shaft while playing with four other toddlers at a day-care center in her home town of Mid- land, Texas. The nation watched and prayed throughout the child's 58-hour ordeal. The little girl’s life was saved by the heroic efforts of many community volunteers. The NFL players union went on strike after week two of the regular season of play. Team owners hired replacement teams to continue the season while negotiations continued. The union agreed to return to play without a final settlement after three weeks. For those hired as replacement players, it was the chance of a lifetime” to be able to play in the NFL. They included Caterina Coto, from Costa Rica, who stayed with the Eugene Saltzmann family; Henrik Sjoberg from Swe- den, who stayed with Mr. Mrs. Carl Run- nels; and Charmaine Collins, from Australia, who stayed with the Marvin Saltzmann family. On Wednesday, September 2, faculty and stu- dents met in the library to attend the AFS breakfast. The purpose was to allow everyone to meet Cathy, Henrik, and Charmaine. Thanks to all who attended and helped make the event a success! Cathy with her American Family, ' Stephanie and Mrs. Saltzman. Henrik enjoyed the breakfast with his Mom Dad,' Mr. Mrs. Runnels. Scott and Jill Saltzmann were brother and sister to Charmaine. . . . Spirit Week, . . . Spirit Week has always been a memorable occasion at Waterford High, and this year was no exception. Students and faculty were able to show their enthusiasm while keeping with the Fantasy Island theme. Besides the class spirit competition, the cheerleaders came up with a new spirit-rais- ing idea. They started the penny jar competi- tion in which students brought pennies and other coins to fill their class jar. The class with the most pennies (the Sophomores) won the competition. 6 Spout IVeeJi . . . tfcme UnuiH } Patouk . . . French Club received First place in the club category. The parade was held at 1:30 on Friday, October 9, followed by the pep rally. The teachers, as well as the students, enjoyed them- selves on the memorable day. The Wolverines lost a hard fought game to the Whitewater Whippets , 14-41, that same evening. A dance was held on Saturday night in the gym. The theme was Endless Summer Nights, and the music was provided by Fat Chants. Homecoming may be one of the many milestones throughout your high school years. J In the fall of 1984, the 184 members of the class of '88 entered the halls of WHS for the first time. There were many things we didn't know about until we were helped along by those friendly seniors. Before we knew it, our first Homecoming was upon us. We were very excited and happy to Bury the Broncos and the rest of the school, even though our float won only 3rd place. Nevertheless, our spirit was first rate! Our freshmen representatives were Scott Klein and Beth Nannemann. Leading us through all these firsts were: Dale Mittelstaedt, President; Tammy Berg, Vice President; Donna Titze, Secretary; and Julie Benavides, Treasurer. Just as we began to get used to the routine, spring was upon us with all its new activities. Finally, we had the routine down. We became sophomores! The end of all the firsts. Class officers for our 183 sophomores were: Joe Zablocki, President; Scott Klein, Vice President; Donna Titze, Secretary; and Tim Halverson, Treasurer. Our second Homecoming was a great success. Our float received a first place because we knew our team would Spit on the Panthers.” Sophomore reps for the Homecoming festivities were John Rydzik and Deana Tweed. Before we knew it, the time had come for cupid to go to work. With his help, the sophomore class was able to sponsor a very successful Valentine's Day dance. Spring rolled around all too quickly, bringing the summer along with it. Time flew by and we became juniors. All 172 of us were upperclassmen. Leading us into the big time were: Jack Hammer, President; Meg Stone, Vice President; Tim Halverson, Secretary; and Mark Read, Treasurer. Amy Marta was our Badger Girl and Jack Hammer was our Badger Boy. Once again, the Homecoming activities began. For the first time, we had a disastrous float. But we managed to have a great time anyway. The theme was Trash the Falcons” and that’s exactly what we did to our float. Jack Hammer and Trudy Kopchinski were our class representatives. This particular winter passed slowly. Then came our big occasion — the 1987 Junior Prom! Reigning over the festivities were King John Rydzik and Queen Renee Scherrer. The representatives were Paul Ulrich and Andrea Lauria (co-chairmen), Tim Halverson and Donna Titze, and Dale Mittelstaedt and Tammy Berg. The beautiful decorations of rose, pink, and white and the fantastic entertainment by the Wait helped make this prom one of the most memorable ever. It truly was Almost Paradise,” as the theme stated. Finally we were seniors! Now we could sit back and watch the freshmen and everyone else go through the things we were experts at by this time. Leading the 164 members of the class of '88 through our final year were: Dale Mittelstaedt, President; Jack Hammer, Vice President; Gretchen Davidson, Secretary; and Meg Stone, Treasurer. The class was also very fortunate to receive Cathy Coto, Charmaine Collins, and Henrik Sjoberg as our AFS students. Once again, the Homecoming festivities began. We had a disastrous float — but this year, we had an excuse. Senioritis” was already setting in. The Wolverines lost to the Whitewater Whippets with a score of 41-14. In spite of this, our senior Homecoming was a success. Homecoming King and Queen were Pat Eulgen and Lucy Sanchez. Henrik Sjoberg and Tammy Berg represented our Senior Class. Our final year is drawing to a close and graduation is right around the corner. We realize how very quickly the past four years went by. On May 29, 1988, our class closed not only the doors to high school, but also a door that has many memories of good times and close friendships behind it. We can leave with the knowledge that we can always hold these memories close, and we will always . . . Remember. 1 SadoKi 15 Jeri Lynn Bazen John Benson Julie Benavides Brian Bertschinger Teri Beck Tammy Berg Mike Ahnert Jennifer Axelson Robert Albee 16 SeMiou Jill Block £toi H 17 Nancy Christoffersen Doug Cheever Michelle DePatie Brian Dworak Vicky Dohve Srkml 19 20 SmjUM Glenn Fluegge Jolyn Gnader Dean Grobarchik Heather Greeley Kevin Greil Tim Halverson Kim Fisher Kris Gauerke £toio U 21 Jim Kapelke Dean Janke Wendy Jock Kris Kienast Cindy Kickland Jackie Ketterhagen Jason Klepp Christy Kietzke Scott Klein 22 SeMiou Raul Koch Andrea Lauria Kelly Kossow SeMioHl 23 Amy Marta Kris Mattke Anthony McCrank Jeff Mickelson Jeanette Means Cathy Meyer Jerry Mehlhaff Amy Metz Robert Milentz 24 £mu a Renee Mischel Dale Mittelstaedt Jim Mitchell Bekki Moll Beth Moran Lisa Morris Beth Nannemann Sandy Oberhart Scott Novak Jennifer Peck Nicole Ovaska Roberta O'Leary 6 SeMUfll Mark Quilling Tanya Rausch David Radtke Michael Rasmusson Todd Reich StoitM 27 Rachel Roberts Kurby Rickert Carey Robran 4 Q.S QtotiM Don Shine Renee Scherrer Jennifer Schulz Kelly Shawhan Rick Seater Troy Seefeld Mark Shubert Troy Scheibel Michael Schroeder £eniMi 29 Henrik Sjoberg Michelle Stachowiak Paul Stahura Brad Stendahl Meg Stone Chris Stern Dean Sylvester Lisa Stephenson Randy Thompson Deana Tweed Paul Ulrich Dana Vyvyan Sudori 31 JuMixHl 33 . . . After being welcomed by the recorder consort and a brass fanfare, diners shared some humor and fun during the dinner of Roast turkey, baked ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, and other trimmings. Of course, the meal would not be com- plete without the Wassail Bowl and Blaming Plum pudding. They put a great deal of time and effort into the orga- nization of an overnight with the AFS students and Homecoming festivities. In addition to this, they held several assemblies including Bridges and the band The Edge.” They again sponsored the blood drive in March. This year student council tried to get the student body more involved. One way they did this was by sending a student council member to each of the school board meetings. To re- ceive more student input, they added the Suggestion Box in the office. Our council members should be regarded as leaders who are trying to make school life more interesting for the rest of us. This year we hosted students from three countries, Costa Rica, Australia, and Sweden. Henrik Sjoberg came through the Y.E.S. program and added much to AFS ac- tivities. After hosting a Faculty Breakfast in the fall, students also worked hard on a Homecoming float and helped with the annual pancake breakfast in November which was sponsored by the Adult Chapter. The highlight of the year was the out-in- state weekend in December, that brought 12 other visiting AFS stu- dents to Waterford. The team is coached by Mr. McDermott. . . . Gymaida . The 1987-88 Waterford gymnastics team kept up the winning tradition of past years. Julie Benavides and Becka Victor consistently put in quality per- formances with high scores. The team did well in the Arlington Heights In- vite in December and took third place at the Salem Invite in early January. A lot of young talent is developing in several of the underclassmen that will keep the team strong in the future. The girls owe much to their coaches, Mrs. Beck and Mrs. Yankunas. The girls’ varsity basketball team again added lots of excitement to the winter sports season at WHS. Under the direction of new Head Coach Mr. Kelm, the team got stronger as the season went on. Scoring leaders were Meg Stone and Beth Nannemann, and another senior Amy Marta was often hot with the 3 point shots. Several sophomore and junior players will gain experience for next year. The team also placed second in the Waterford Holi- day Tournament. 100 BallcttbaM The sophomore and freshmen girls teams had great seasons, with the sophs having a 12-2 record overall at one point. Chris Rateicke and Kevin Oleson also contributed to the team by having good seasons. With only one senior on the team, the remaining wrestlers will return and make for a strong team in the future. The girls practiced many long, hard hours in preparation for performances at football and basketball games. Their work was very worthwhile and they did an excel- lent job out on the floor. The squad also went to camp this summer at Whitewater. They worked hard together, and were awarded a spirit stick. The group is advised by Mrs. Leick. The 1987-1988 Wrestling Cheer- leaders consisted of 5 new members. Despite that fact, they did an excel- lent job. Their practices every night after school were filled with work, but they also managed to have some fun. JVs are coached by Mr. Milatz. The freshmen ended up the season with the best record of all thanks to consistent hitting from Jeff O’Brien and Kent Milam. Top batting aver- ages were turned in for Jenny Kim- ball, Kerri Janssen, and Roxanne Winker, and the team looks forward the years ahead. 147 TtacJc . . . The girls track team was plagued by injuries early in the season, but got stronger as time went on. Senior Beth Nannemann always did well in the hurdles, while Nichole Felber and Nancy Scherbarth often won the 100- and 200- yard dashes respec- tively. The team placed first overall in the W-Club Invite in April. The girls were coached by Mr. Westergaard, Mr. Bugenha- gen, and Mrs. DeBoth. Girls Truck, row 4, left to right: Coach Westergaard, B. It is a story about a group of orphans, especially one little girl named Annie, who are having an awfully hard time of life because of the woman in charge of the orphanage and their near-poverty living conditions because of the depression. Annie is waiting, hoping that the parents who left her there will return for her one day. Suddenly, the rich Daddy Warbucks whisks Annie off into his world where they begin a wonderful adventure in growth and love. The audiences that enjoyed this production on the WHS stage quickly found themselves back in the 1930s. The play was directed by Mrs. Bousquet and stage manager was Nicole Richert. The servants in the orphanage watch over the children. Daddy Warbucks discusses world affairs with President Roosevelt. We Annie is returned to the orphanage after running away. Annie guards the locket with the picture of her parents. Upon returning home, Warbucks makes sure things are in order. Miss Hannigan, Rooster, and Lily sing “Easy Street.
