The Year In Politics 1. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gobachev met in Reykjavik, Iceland, for a two-day summit in October to discuss arms control. The two leaders reached an impasse on testing of the U.S. Star Wars weaponry. 2 3. After 20 years of ruling without serious challenge, Philippine president Ferdinand E. Marcos was forced from office amid charges of corruption and scandal. The new president, Corazon Aquino, was faced with political and economic turmoil. 4 5. Gennadiy A. Zakharov, a Soviet U.N. employee, was arrested on a subway platform in New York City and charged with spying. A week later American jour- nalist Nicholas S. Daniloff was arrested on the streets of Moscow and accused of spying on the Soviet Union. Both men were released within weeks and the entire affair set the stage for a super- power Summit meeting in Iceland. 6. U.S. Air Force and Navy jets attacked five targets inside Libya under cover of darkness in April, delivering a response to what President Reagan called the mon- strous brutality of Libyan-backed terrorism. 7. The city of New York gave the Statue of Liberty a big 1986 bash — a Fourth of July festival of song, celebrities and fireworks honoring the great lady's first 100 years. 12 CURRENT EVENTS

The Year In Events 1. NY Mets catcher Gary Carter is lifted in the air by relief pitcher Jesse Orosco after the Mets won game 7 in the World Series over the Boston Red Sox. 2. Britain's Prince Andrew married commoner Sarah Ferguson in July at Westminster Abbey in a spectacle that mustered the pomp and glory of Britain's monarchy. 3. Caroline Kennedy, who captured America's heart as a little girl romping through the White House, married Edwin Schlossberg in July 4. Among the celebrities who died in 1986 were singer Kate Smith, noted for her version of God Bless America ; 5. Benny Goodman, the King of Swing; 6. James Cagney, one of Hollywood's famous toughguys; and 7. Ted Knight, remembered for his role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. 8. In September, Miss Tennessee Kellye Cash was crowned Miss America.
