Since parents were besieged by individ- ual club fund-raising projects, WHS tried something new and conducted one school- wide raffle prior to Christmas vacation. Students sold $1 raffle tickets, giving the public a chance to win one of seven prizes, ranging from $100 to the grand prize of $1,000. Over $8,500 was earned as profit from the raffle. Students in Mr. Kelm’s computer class developed a program which distribut- ed the money to various clubs in school, giving each a percentage comparable to the number of members in the organization. Drum Roll Please! Dan Graczyk steps down to receive his prize for selling 391 tickets. Leo Linnemanstons presents gifts from various clubs to Leo and Toko. The Student Council is made up of students from the fresmen, sophomore, junior, and senior classes. These members work hard on making the school a better place for all. This year the council looked into complaints made by the students, teachers, and the office, and tried to resolve them the best way possible. They were involved in dances, assemblies, Homecoming, the Blood Drive, and funding scholarships. The W.H.S. Stu- dent Council also became more involved in Statewide Student Council events. In November they sent members to the Fall Conference and they were also involved in member exchanges with other schools. The Student Council worked very hard on making improvements for the stu- dents and all of the members should be proud of their accomplishments. Student Council: Row 4 left to right; K. When asked about problems and weak points, Coach Schaetzke indicated there was a lack of depth, leadership, and talent. The team’s strength was the fact that it got better as the season went on. Losing Leo Linne- manstons and Dick Reesman because of injury was unfortunate for these two seniors and for the team. Varsity Football Row I seated left to right:). Rydzik, G. Janke. The undefeated team then ventured to Oshkosh, where they took place in the 1986 State Competition. They then tied for fifth place with an overall successful season. Along with all the team efforts, a number of individuals also received a great number of honors; Joan Chart and Jori Whitford were named to the All-Conference Team and Jori was also named to the 2nd All-State Team. This year’s golf team was very small and young, consisting of only sopho- mores and freshmen. However, the goal remained the same: for each indi- vidual to reach the full capabilities by the end of the season, and then as a team do the best they possibly could. 104 GYMNASTICS This year's'wrestling team has two new coaches: Coach Kyle and Coach Nanneman. Although the team lacks ex- perience, the determination shown by them was tremendous. Steve Podgorski led the team with an undefeated record of 11-0 through the first half of the season. Though the team will miss the ser- vices of Dick Reesman for part of the sea- son, the team has enough talent to chal- lenge for another conference title. The ball - handling duties are taken care of by Scott Hegemann, and Shawn Gahagan is the out- side scoring threat. Cooks Cooks (left to right): Ms. Washburn, Mrs. Essman, Mrs. Bucholtz, Mrs. Caliva. The Cooks are those who make our meals and keep us fed with healthy, well-balanced food. They all show great concern and must care for our well-being. FACULTY 115 Social Studies Joseph Hying Jim Edwards Patrick Morgan Social Studies teaches us how groups of people (soci- eties) learned to live together. We should learn to be a good citizen; and we should learn from the mistakes of societies past. Music Music is something that stretches the imagination. It can change something ordinary into something incredible. Music demonstrates incredible beauty and hateful ugliness. Music celebrates life. Many students at W.H.S. celebrate with music together as a family, in choir, band, and performance groups. 116 FACULTY Kim Westergaard Steve Jacob English Ralph Eckhardt Mary Ann Bousquet English teaches us to communicate. The rules of grammar may seem a bit dry, but without them, our language would consist of garbled information. Through English classes, students learn to write how we feel and what we think. We can read the literature of other people and gain from their insights. Carolyn Cooley Terry Bahr Terry Schaetzke Agriculture And Art Jeff Ray Agriculture Sonja Kipper Art Agriculture is the study of plants and animals and how they live and grow. Students learn how to manage a farm and provide a much needed food source for the survival of our nation. Art enhances the natural ability that so very few of us have. Art helps us to see the world from a fresh point of view, and it gives us a chance to be expressive and original. FACULTY 117 Foreign Language Lynn Graf The Foreign Language Department teaches French, Spanish and Latin. Foreign languages increase our scope, bring the world together and make world communication more possible. Foreign languages encourages students to learn more about the world around them so that they might grow to better understand it. Joan Schuster Kathy Mitchell Business Education I Sally Osenga 118 FACULTY Marcia Ranke Business Education is the study of handling the money, correspon- dence, and knowing what it takes to make an office work today. Business Education teaches us how to type memos, to keep re- cords up to date and increase effi- ciency with shorthand and office procedures. Dave Milatz Home Economics Home Economics is the study of those skills necessary for running a home. It teaches you the basics from raising a child to making a shirt. Doris Noltner Marilyn Nitka Mathematics Cheryl Lettenberger Dick Kelm FACULTY 119 Industrial Arts Industrial Arts teaches us to be craftsmen. We learn all .kinds of things from building small cabinets to drawing the floor plan of a house. Nils McDermott Lloyd Frye Health And Physical Education Barb Deichl Physical Education is a class that aims to keep our bodies as fit as our minds. We have fun learning to exer- cise our muscles, working on a team basis, and practicing good sports- manship. Ross Gettrust 120 FACULTY Pam Beck Science Science is a process of questions: Why does it work?”; How does it work?”; How much is needed? ; What's in it? Science plays on our curiosity; encouraging us to ask ques- tions, formulate theories, and test them. It encourages us to look deeper than face value and find out what is really going on. Marian Schraufnagel j i. Larry Nannemann Paul Bixler Dan Bugenhagen Special Education And Reading Karen Ebert Louann Brandstetter The Special Services Department is a place where stu- dents can go to get help on a one-to-one basis. The department is tailored to fit the needs of each student seeking help. Reading is just one of these special services that enables students to better understand the written language. In February, Joe Whitford passed away following a lengthy illness. During the more than 20 years that he taught here, Mr. Whitford dedicated himself to his Industrial Arts classes, driver’s education, and a variety of athletic programs. Under his guidance and leadership, we as a school and the entire community were able to share in the happiness of the Girls' State Basketball Class B championship. He touched the lives of many throughout his teaching career, and will always be loved by family and friends. 46 MEMORIAL In March, Kathy Kossow, a member of the sophomore class, was killed in a traffic accident. As a student at WHS, Kathy was a member of the French Club and FBLA. She also enjoyed writing poetry and being with her friends and family. Kathy’s kindness to others and cheerful attitude will always be remembered to those of us who knew and loved her. She is missed by family and friends. Varsity Baseball provided much fun and ex- citement during the spring. The team got off to an excellent start, having a 9-1 conference record at one point. Pitching was very strong, thanks to Chris Wolfgram and Dick Reesman. After going through regional play, the team defeated Case and Milwaukee Hamilton in regionals to make it to the state tournament in Wausau. In spite of losing the first tournament game to Appleton West, the season was extremely successful. Con- gratulations to Coach Nannemann and the team! The varsity team consisted of only 4 seniors, 1 junior, and 6 sophomores. The varsity record was 2-11, but hopefully next season will be much improved with 7 letter winners and many talented freshmen returning. This year’s team was led by seniors Stephanie O'Brien, Lorli Schingeck, Joan Chart, who was voted best de- fensive player, and Bethany Fregien, who was named MVP for the 1987 season. New Medico Rehabilitation Center graciously allowed the cast and crew to use their facilities and students built the sets. A familiar story of the von Trapp family in the lat 1930’s, the play tells of the love affair of Maria, a former nun, and Captain Georg von Trapp of the Austrian navy. As World War II breaks out, the family is forced to flee to Switzerland because of the Nazi takeover of their homeland.
