The staff of the 1966 Longhorn has worked many hours to give you one last look at Waterbury High School. While the record of the 1965-66 school ye-ar is as complete as we can make it, We believe We cannot capture in pictures or words, the nostalgia that publishing a final edition evokes. lt is our hope, therefore, that YOU will complete this final edition. LONGHORN 1 966 Waterbury High School Waterbury, Vermont Dedication Cc OU never miss the Water till the well runs dry. How often have you heard those Words? Familiar though they may be, they convey a mes- sage of sadness and memories -- Water bury High School will close its doors for the final time in june . Throughout the many years Waterbury High School has existed, many students have passed through its halls, have learned lessons on which lives have been built, and have been graduated to reflect on the guidance and help these hallowed halls have imparted. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that We respectfully dedicate this final edi- tion of the LONGHORN to Waterbury High School. We hope that in so doing we may say in some small Way what hundreds of graduates have felt as they commenced a life apart from Waterbury High School. 6 H, ul I 51551 W I og ' sm' 4,L m1.u.u an I .zz XA. Mr. Reuben We1l's daughters taught the first school in towng it was a private school but no record can be found which clarifies whether or not the school they taught was in the first school house . In about 1801, a building for a County Grammar School was put up and roofed. Private subscrip- tion helped to defray the expenses, but the town did nothing to aid in its completion, and the building was later sold and turned into a hotel. 4 Original H igh School 1897 Waterbury ,S First School Building. Lyndon Center was the first place to be considered but Waterbury Center won the final decision. The citizens of Waterbury Center had to pledge 3515, OOO before 1868 in order to build the in- stitution. The money could be raised, so the Corporation voted to raise 9520, OOO. The institution finally closed its doors in February, l906. In l9l3 this building became the graded school for Waterbury Center, whose youngsters still use the classrooms in it. In l888 Waterbury had 16 common school districts and a graded school district. Each district operated inde- pendently and maintained a school. The same situation existed earlier in 1876, except that there were l8 districts. The number of weeks school was held then varied from 20 weeks in some districts to 33 weeks in Districts l CWaterbury Streetb. Most held sessions for 24 weeks. F the building complex that stands on the current site, the middle building is the original, having been constructed in 1898. At that time, it was considered to be outstanding in beauty. In 1912 the present Village elementary school was added to the original struc- ture. The final addition, the senior high school building and gymnasium, was built in 1936. Now Waterbury has outgrown its own high school. In the fall the doors will open to admit students from 6 towns to the new Charles E . Harwood Union High School.
