I slowly contlnued down the dlmly llghted alley I enloyed these walks ey en though the people wlth w hom I l1y ed and assoclated d1dn t ap proye of them but I consldered It safe enough now IH the forb1dden alley The walk was w ell pay ed On each slde were dark closed doors and there w as barely enough llght to see where I was golng As I rounded a corner I w as knocked roughly down by someone w ho seemed much more 1n a hurry than I was After we picked oursely es up I notlced that he was dressed rather queerly He had on a fortune teller s costume and I couldn t keep from laughmg Much to my surprlse he too started laughlng Then I thought to myself Maybe he Isnt all there He asked me lf I had seen hls crystal ball x I declded that I had better humor hlm so I sa1d No but I w1ll help you find It We walked down the alley and we found the crystal ball 1n a corner I finally lnqulred who he was and why he wanted thls crystal ball He lnformed me with a great YVRXIHL of hls alms and head that he w as the great Jack Know Nothlng Tell All Keefe and that he needed the ball to make h1s nlghtly ga7e I was surprlsed when I heard the name for I had graduated with a boy by the same name but I d1dn t thlnk that th1s character could be he Yet a lot can happen 1n fifteen years' When I asked he xmmedlately sa1d that he was the Jack Keefe from Waterbury I told h1m that I was Harold Boyden h1s old pal He suggested that we look 1nto the crystal ball to see lf we could find any of our former class mates We sat on the floor and Jack started saylng stupld th1ngs as usual and waylng h1s arms Much to my amazement the ball started to glow Before us was a lovely beach scene The first person we notlced was a glrl sunnlng herself ln a flowered cellophane bathlng su1t and on a closer obsery ation we saw that It was Ruth Mary Hlckorv getting a tan for a beauty contest As We were gazlng at her pulchrltude who should appear but Andy Carpenter whose attlre was sllghtly ragged and as we watched hlm all that we could gather was that he had gone 1nto the pro fesslon of a beachcomber Yes he always was lndustrlousl Then swoop mg down from the Sk16S came a plane and at 1ts controls was our old frlend Allce Grayes When she flew closer we saw a ladder and grapple hook attached to her plane We assumed that she had modernlzed her man huntmg equlpment Farther down the beach we spled a happy contented couple It was Geneyleye Izor and Eben Smlth They were w ell establlsh ed wlth Genexleve holdlng down more than her half Vthen we looked agaln we saw Lorralne Carpenter showlng her suntan bathlng sult to a throng of appreclatne admlrers Before the scene faded away we notlced a concession booth whlch ady ertlsed as speclaltles Sugar House Dogs Burgs and Steaks Immedlately we knew that lt was operated by John Qulnn and John Harrlngton The next scene presented a loyely .blue sky and roll1ng wooded h1lls At the base of these hllls w as a small country town named Westoy ershoe of Threebuckles County At the outsklrts we notlced Buddy Deal slttlng on a stump looklng through field glasses We follow ed hlS gaze and saw a lot of comely glrls practlclng a folk dance Buddy was st1ll obserylng new ter11tor1es for somethmg that takes less work and enelgv Glanclng back at the town we saw a large slgn leadlng S S S S We became curlous and looklng below the slgn saw a cafe and Its propuetor w as none . w v v - V l v I v . v w A u nf v ' 1 u y v v' v ' v . 1 , - , .. , . . v v + ' v ' - 1 a , l , v Y Y D . . y 7 . f ' 1 Y . . , . tl r 9 . . , .
