The Pac Man game represents the struggles of the students at Water Valley School. Pac Man is a symbol of different students in search of one unifying goal, to be successful. Each student is striving for the victory that waits at the games end. Sometimes students are defeated by obstacles that stand in their way, but invariably they pick themselves up, start the game over and eventually win. Whether the obstacle is winning state in football, passing English IV or merely surviving the first day of school, the students at Water Valley are struggling to realize the final goal, SUCCESS! This yearbook hopes to show the Pac Man goal of success embodied in Water Valley School. 1 A I PUBLISHED BY THE 1983 WILDCAT YEARBOOK STAFF OF WATER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL WATER VALLEY I.S.D. P.O. It was a greater feeling winning two more games and being competitive in others. We knew our men were going to be good because of their attitude during our off-season program. They realized the desire to win was useless without the desire to prepare. These Water Valley men had a lot of desire, dedication, discipline and pride - even though they only had sophomore experience in eleven-man football. They executed like veterans! lt was an experience we worked so hard for, and one we will never forget. Sandy McSpadden .V-afar 'jg mx. Ii . ,.7, 0 s , ,kin gl G, Ni HQ... , if -iw 1. The team was a dedicated bunch of boys who practiced diligently for the season. The morale and spirit of the team was always present while they were practicing or playing in a game. The team shared the same pride that was exemplified by the Varsity team. Each game was played with improvement. These young men will be the nucleus of the next championship team at Water Valley. Led by Co- Captains Gaynell Glass and Becky Hargraves, the Wildcats finished a close second in district play, and then proceeded to win bi-district, area, and the first round of regionals before being stopped by Bronte. This placed them in the top 8 in the state. An assortment of crippling injuries could have side-tracked this team, but didn't, which speaks for their character. It was a privilege to coach them, and I will certainly miss them. With perfect timing, Becky Hargraves outpushes her opponent. As Coach Mounts yells Bend your knees, Freshman Gwen Upchurch uses her own style of bumping the ball. 28 'A REWARDING SEASON' Diann Farris felt that the 1982 Volleyball season was very rewarding. As a senior, it will stand out most in my mind as a season full of hard work and dedication. We all overcame many setbacks that could have been discouraging. After the Regional Tournament we all felt the hard work and dedication was well worth it. I would also like to say, on behalf of the team, a special thanks to Coach Mounts, who had to put up with us through thick and thin and he never gave up on us. Gaynell Glass exhibits her spiking ability against the Lake View Maidens. Tracy McCoulsky increased her confidence and played with much more stability this year. Volleyball was a new game for freshman Teresa Charleaworth, but her athletic abilities and awareness became very useful on the court. 29 Team Assistance Craig Chambers assumed many responsibilities when he decided to take the position of being the High School girls volleyball manager. The task appeared quite glamorous to the eyes of onlookers who saw Craig being the only boy with all those girls. But behind the scenes there were obligations beyond belief. He took responsibility of camera equipment and filming, hoping that the lighting was sufficient and the distance was accurate. He always seemed to catch all of our mistakes. He made several trips with the Volleyball team, including the long and exciting trip to Stephenville. He was a strong supporter and attributed his time and effort to assist Coach Mounts and the girls. 30 Experience in the Making The Junior High Volleyball Team has made tremendous improvement this year. They have worked hard on individual and team skills. Their win over Bronte, and winning consolation at the Miles Tournament were two outstanding team achievements. The girls showed leadership, spirit, and enthusiasm throughout the season. .QL al - Lyn Ransom, Chiffona Snead, Lisa Shelton, Janene Schwartz, Lisa Hopson, Lori Millican, Kathy Juarez, Michelle Ayers, Donna McCorkle, Flenee Brown, Monica Turner, Wendy McCorkle, Sylvia Trevinio, Marsha Littlefield, Bea Oaks, Coach Brandy Miller. Mrs. Miller has been the Junior High coach for two years now and each year she works harder with the girls and they work harder for her. She is building a strong Junior High program which eventually will benefit our High School program. She has promoted the idea of a winning attitude, respect, confidence, and pride. 7 + M ,iw - W, A r ' . LNG WMC' tjwjjidjoi lfvjli Agway ' af' as fig? A mid-season slump caused by injuries to key players, brought out the true character of this team, winning third in district. They found that team play and the will to win sometimes overcomes adversity and superior talent. l am extremely proudrof this team and what it accomplished, and hope what they started will reflect in future Wildcat teams. The Water Valley basketball team did an excellent job for a group of young men that returned only one part-time starter from last year's team, quoted Coach Sandy McSpadden. Three of the Wildcat starters this season had not played basketball since the eighth grade, and this should give them an excellent chance to win a district crown next season. Naturally, we were unhappy that we finished in third place, but we were pleased with our team defense which finished first in district allowing our opponents an average of 33.7 points per game. 38 Defense was the name of the game when Water Valley hosted Eola, defeating them 54 to 41. w ar V V V f Every team needs a lefty and Craig Chambers proved his ball handling and , shooting skills even if he doesn't do it with the right hand. Deep inthe heart of most seniors is a wish for one more athletic season, one more year to enjoy senior privileges, one more chance to do something a little better or to right a wrong. The wish remains in spite of the knowledge that all we can do is leave behind a mark or a memoryg a part of our lives through which others will pass. 46 RICHARD ASCOL TIM BLAIR ROBIN COLE TED BAGWELL CALVIN CATES KENNETH CURRIE VICKI DENNIS DIANN FARRIS DUSTY GIFFORD ROBERT DOTY J ,K QQJQN. 5 1 .2 373?ffi?.i' P . Flying on a chartered Rio Airlines plane to Mr. Roark's neighborhood, they all thrilled at the prospect of living out their wildest hallucinations for five glorious days. Upon arrival, they checked into the Wildcat suites of the Heartbreak Hotel and wandered over to meet Mr. Roark and his skilled and effective sidekick, Tattoo. After introductions and much merry-making, they all drove over to the Yellow Dirt Road in Mr. Roark's golf cart to begin their journey. Miss Herridge stayed at the Dew Drop lnn with Tattoo and played the Ms. Pac Man game and listened to jungle music on the Muzark system while sipping V-8 juice. Dusty, Richard, Kim and Cornell chose the Rodeo Fantasy and won lots of belt buckles and saddles for their skill at Bull Shooting, Bull Throwing, dancing the Cotton-Eye Joe, and wearing tight-fitting jeans. Kim married a rodeo clown named Bandy and hired a wino to decorate their Rodeo Arena. Dusty found a redneck girl to go with his white socks and Blue Ribbons but she took his Senior ring and ran off with a truck driver. Cornell was sent to prison for cheating on a mechanical bull ride and when Richard drove his pick-up in the rain to pick her up at the station she had missed her train. Vicki, Sharon, Kindra and Benita went to Woodstock in their fantasy and stole the show by performing as the spaced-out sisters and singing their smash hit, Another Brick in the Ear. After the festival they took the Lo've Boat back to the island and chaperoned Mr. and Mrs. Greer Willis on their honeymoon. Chris and Ted represented Poland at the Moscow Olympics. Chris was disqualified for throwing his discus into the stands and then was sent to Siberia to tan bear skins for being an American spy. He was arrested because he wore number 007 on his uniform and signed his letters home with From Russia, with Love. Ted was disqualified from being the official Polish Olympic photographer when the KGB caught him in the woman's locker room singing, Baby l'm Amazed. 47 Dena tried to find happiness without Tim and wound up falling in love with gang-leader from New York's lower east side. They married and had 16 delinquent children. Tim, on the other hand, ended up marrying into the Melvin Klein family and marketing his own line of men's designer underwear. Bob Doty made his fantasy of owning the Generic Brand Beer Distributorship in Broome, Texas become a reality, but then left it to change fantasies. lt seems that a wandering band of Hare Krishna monks stopped in Broome one day to purchase some of Bob's product. After guzzling several 12-packs, the itinerant monks were able to convert Bob and he became a Hare Krishna evangelist. Bob quickly recruited Julian Jalomo into his new fantasy as his sidekick songleader and they roamed across west Texas holding tent revivals in major cities like Salt Gap, Bear Valley and Bronte. One evening while crusading Mertzon, Bob and Julian wound up at the Mertzon Ford Tractor Dealership where Calvin Cafes was living out his fantasy as the biggest volume dealer of Ford Riding Lawnmowers in the world. Bob and Julian became Calvin's leading salesmen of used riding lawnmowers and backed up their sales with expert service from ace mechanic, Trina Owens. Trina set a Guinness Book of World Records mark for being able to overhaul a lawnmower engine in less than 3 minutes, 29 seconds. To reward his staff's outstanding performance, Calvin took them all on a round-the- world trip in his hot-air balloon sponsored by Motorcraft Sparkplugs. Pam, Becky and Gaynell went to Los Angeles seeking fame and fortune. Pam became a Los Angeles Flam's cheerleader and did a ram-tough job of screaming at opposing teams. Becky wound up at the beach where she flirted with all the lifeguards and body- builders, hung ten on her surfboard and played volleyball with all the beach boys and surfer girls. Gaynell won an oscar, a grammy, and an emmy award for her role in the movie, Fast Times at Water Valley High, and then appeared on solid gold to sing her solid gold hit, Heart of Glass, with Andy Gibb. After many appearances on TV talk shows and magazine covers she rejoined Pam and Becky and drove Becky's Woody back to the island. 48 PAM GONZALES CHRIS HOERSTER DAVID JONES BECKY HARGRAVES JULIAN JALOMA MARK LASATEFZ SHARON MAFIOUM KINDRA OAKES BENITA SAFIGENT BILLY MONTGOMERY I hk - OOOO A TRINA OWENS TIM SMITH Billy and Kenneth started off on a surfing safari with Becky, but took a wrong turn and found themselves on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins who happened to be on a safari in Nigeria, hunting the rare club-footed hyena. They were attacked by a band of hair-lipped pygmies who speared Billy in the earlobe and bit off Kenneth's big toe. Billy gained over a thousand yards against the pygmies. Mark went to Hollywood and told talent scouts there that he was Burt Reynolds' brother. He was given a job as the stunt man for, That's Incredible and as a double for, Those Amazing Animals. Eventually, he got into the twilight zone and found his way back to Water Valley. Robin's fantasy took her to Rome where she became a singing nun. She soon retired and joined the circus to perform with the amazing trick dog act. She ran into Tim Blair and Gerald Stover who had opened a snowmobile and dog sled repair shop in Colorado. Robin sold her dogs to Tim and Gerald who rented them as sled dogs and she started singing with John Denver. Tim and Gerald eventually won the world cup of snowmobiling with dogs, while Robin's first single, Some days are Zirconium, Some Day's Stink, went platinum. Diann went to Broadway to try her luck as Lady Bracknell. She finally got a role playing the part of Ophelia in Hamlet. Her fantasy was to be or not to be . . .She decided not to be and returned early to the island in time to catch Coach Mounts in his fantasy as being the executive vice- principal at Texas ASM where Mr. Fleming was the president of the school. At the end of 5 days, all the seniors returned to find David still at the yellow dirt road trying to decide which fantasy to choose. He had a hard time because he lives in a dream world most of the time and he could not really tell what was fantasy and what was reality. It was a trip they'll never forget. Pam Gonzales, president of the student coun- cil, proudly takes part in the groundbreaking. eine 70 i ifyii Miss Fincher and Mr. Kromer look forward to a new and better high school to lead. The groundbreaking ceremony was special to everyone. To the students it meant there would soon be a new high school with more students to meet and better opportunity for educational growths. For the faculty it means better teaching facilities to improve and continue to provide a strong educational institution for all the students. As the new high school goes up, perhaps the community will be able to pull together and give the support any school may need to be successful. 71 Homecoming Week Was Tim Blair was everyone's hero. SUPERMAN captured the hearts of the student body, showing them his expression of spirit. Of course the initial S stood tor spirit. Ginger Chandler and Carolyn Herridge, unbelievably members of the faculty, made sure their military authority would hold the Wildcat fort down, which was bursting with spirit. Everyone has heard of the three little pigs. Or have they? Kim Wilkes, Robin Cole, and Cornell Strube rooted their way around school and were obviously bulging out with spirit. Ml Packed With Perpetual Spirit Tim Smith proudly paraded his girls, Dena Gibson, and Margo Smith once around the cafeteria, ex- pressing his way of keeping the spirit plentiful. Amos and Andy, as portrayed by Anita Spieker and Cindy Turner, strutt through the cafeteria. Kim Wilkes and Robin Cole were up to their ears in wood, helping the bonfire expand. Our bonfire gave inspiration and desire to the football team as the attraction seemed angry from its blaze. 74 W V M4155 .- sit l Apprehension along with anticipation were among the feelings of the three Homecoming Duchesses. DRILL LEADERS Vicki Dennis Diann Farris Sandra Cervantez 96 CHEERLEADERS Pam Gonzales, Head Tina Beebe Sharie Cavaness Pam Williford When asked, Why do you enjoy cheerleading? Pam Gonzalez responded, Being a cheerleader is an honor as well as a sport. Cheerleading with Pam Williford, Sharie Cavneu, and Tina Boobo was great fun. We had never worked together before, but it was a ioy becoming acquainted with each other. Friday nights were so exciting with all the jumping, yelling, and silly actions. Cheerleading required several hours of preparation, but it was time that was valued. Just knowing that you were out there leading yells and supporting your team makes it all worthwhile, TWIRLERS Becky Hargraves Gaynell Glass There is nothing like it in the whole world. Twirling with your best friend can be the greatest fun! stated Becky Hargraves. Twirling is an exciting halftime performance where you have a chance to represent your school and entertain the fans. Gaynell and I enjoyed the excitement of twirling even though it required work and a little sweat to 'get it together.' We were always eager to strut out on the field carrying our butterflies right along with us, hoping we wouldn't forget the routine or drop the baton. 97 We're Behind Ya, Flootin' for Ya. . . Routines of the 1982 football season were per- formed to the music of Flamethrower, Pac Man Fever, Physical, and Cotton-Eyed Joe. The twirlers performed routines to the music of Celebration, Off the Wall, and Eye of the Tiger. l si Q ia i .,, l u . -A .V N? 1 5 will so-. gqxwi as '-' 2 ., .,... sc .....- ... s .- .- -I.: .- .. c ss Q t-: 1 , 1- . What is happiness? Philosophers have struggled with this question for centuries. But sometimes answers are found by simple people with humble aims. Teased by a witch to prove that there is happiness in the world, a little Fairy awakes a Scarecrow and promises to make him a real man if he can find happiness. The Scarecrow's search evokes a little smile, a little fright, and perhaps a little tear.
