The freedom we enjoyed outside was gone. We left our world of summer — fun sun friends parties and now all we had was the new environment of learning. Lae) The first day was for feeling our way around and becoming familiar with strange faces bewildering stares weird smiles So much to learn and to adjust to. Wien psienrpsininiish As the days grew shorter and cooler the novelty wore off and we settled into a dull routine. We learned who we could depend on and who to avoid. We discovered about classes — the select few we liked the ones that were hellacious the teachers who cared, the apathetic, the absent minded. Fridays came slowly. Football season — pep rallies hot chocolate and a lot of sweat. Weekends were too short. We took tests We wrote themes We read books. Some prepared for the future, but : most sat back and waited. As the year passed, We elected queens We attended dances then came exams. The middle of the year — Time passed so slowly We waited impatiently for something different something to make it all worth it. 10 Then it happened! snow days snowball fights skiing skating sledding slush We perked up, then The snow and cold became monotonous and soon, we hated It. We wanted warmer weather and summer vacation. We suffered through each day and it became a great pain to continue. Hig. 11 AN sa asiihls 12 Then one day, spring — we felt the warmth we walked barefoot on the grass made out on the grass freaked out on the grass. The sun felt so fine! Days grew longer We forced ourselves to go to school. Some graduated while others sat around and resigned themselves to more years of the same. But until then, three months FREEDOM. 13 14 i NS : 4 ACADEMICS 15 Dr. Herbert Wey. BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. Her bert Wey, president of Appalachian State University, coordinated the affairs between the Uni- versity and the high school. Because the high school served as a laboratory school for the University, many graduate assistants, student teachers, and participa- tors taught and observed classes at the school. Dr. Swanson Richards, superintendent of schools, kept everybody in suspense on his decisions about school on snowy days. The Board of Education made a de- cision that no snow days would be made up on Satur- days and it appeared to some people that they wanted to see how long the 1970-71 school year could last. The Board Of Education — Hugh Hagaman, Edsel Cook, Joe Hartley, John Hollar, James Marsh, Dr. Swanson Richards. 16 Dr. N. A. Miller, principal. The two men who were in full control, Dr. Miller and Mr. Fidler, spent some days chasing after wanderi:2 underclassmen, reminding seniors on contract that they were still allowed to attend classes, and other seniors that they had blown their contracts, reading excuses that might have been written by parents, and checking to see that the liberal dress code was follow- ed. From the safety of their offices, they informed students of daily happenings and special events. To most students, Dr. Miller's most important duty was the handing out of diplomas. DR. MILLER ATTENDS PUDIDILIEIRS Ss CONVENTION Mr. Carl Fidler, assistant principal. 17 Orr ikGe The secretaries kept the office going during times when the good Doctor and Mr. Fidler were preoccupied elsewhere. They kept absent sheets, handled money matters, issued tardy and absent slips, assisted stu- dents in checking out, and kept things going smoothly. The school nurse, Mrs. Harrill, had the difficult job of distinguishing between students who were really sick and ones who needed a last minute excuse to miss a test that they were unprepared for. Miss Wanda Farthing. Mrs. Lois Harrill. Mrs. Gladys Shelton. 18 Mrs. Margaret Gragg Peychvect ric Mr. Ted Perry Mrs. Annabele Hunter 19 LIBRARIANS Librarians spent the days patrolling the library and settling many heated disputes among students — such as: “Was the South the Union?” “Where have all the reserve books gone?” “What! Installment plan for overdue books?” ‘Is Playboy at the desk?”’ Mrs. Randall and Mrs. Heaton also interrogated students — “Are you two entertaining each other?” “What were you young ‘gentlemen’ discussing?” “Did you have a nice nap?”’ Mrs. Heaton on guard duty. 20 Mrs. Lera Randall and Mrs. Myrna Heaton Mrs. Clara Olander Mr. William Edmisten and Mr. Andy Reese. [oe ; a Mrs. Patti Blanton and Mr. Louis Coffey. SCIENCE Experiments in the science department were never kept top secret. Odors lingered in the halls for hours afterwards. Mr. Reese’s room (alias Holly Farms) reeked with the smell of chickens. This, combined with the smells of formaldehyde and singed hair, added to the pollution problem. Unsuspecting stu- dents were in danger of swiftly accelerating pro- jections (falling marbles). Mr. Boyden O. DRIVERS EDUCATION Friday at 9:56 A.M., an APB went out for cars 1, 2, and 3 from the Boone force, and cars 1, and 2 from the Blowing Rock force to report to the county office parking lot. Upon arrival, it was learned from eye-witnesses that car A, a La Sabre driven by one unidentified student and car B, another La Sabre driven by another unidentified student crashed and burned. The joint forces of Blowing Rock and Boone were able to piece together the puzzle of the accident exhibit- ing astonishing powers of deductive reasoning. It was learned that while car A was filling up with gas, car B was speeding up the hill to the tanks. The police- men filled out a report with the facts, given, no charges were filed, the afore mentioned students were severely reprimanded, and the case went down in the annals of crime as disastrous. The J.V. basketball team had an outstanding record this season. Accord- ing to Coach Maudlin, the J.V. basketball program pre- pares the varsities of the future. If this year’s J.V.’s are any indication, next year’s varsity will win the con- ference tournament and go on to the state tourna- ment. Pioneers traveled to Boyden High School at Salisbury and competed in the Western North Caro- lina High School Activities Association Tournam ent in which they finished first place. Butch works on acraddle. 87 The Watauga High Golf Team for the 1970-71 sea- son had a fair season with many 2nd's 3rd’s. Prac- tice for the Pioneers was very limited this year because of the late date in which the Boone Golf Courses open- ed. Also, a handicap to their practice was the unfavor- able weather conditions. Several golfers will be re- turning next year to work for a better 1971-72 season. Coach Mauldin checks score cards with Davy Maples.
