It was no dance but hard with long hours. Flight quarters was a call which came at ungodly hours, and while many of their shipmates snoozed on, the air department had early reveille or would drag their weary bones about late into the night. From flight deck control, through primary fly, along the catwalks- down below in the catapult rooms or arresting gear engine spaces, an inticate operation went on to get our planes in the air or safely back aboard. Plane pushers on the hangar deck in their blue shirts always managed to get some ironic humor out out their task, even when they dragged the deck to spread the rust dust about a little more. Other departments could kid the air department about being the spoiled brat of the family, or sometimes the wicked sister.in- law -but in point of fact, it was this child which kept MOMMA and POPPA working together when their own individuality may have led them in different directions. The iocose citation given the Air Boss at the New Year Happy Hour read in part, never have so many slept on so few wings ln all truth this hard working youngster had to snatch sleep at odd times. The tie downs were either going on or coming oft, hangar bay til had to be cleared for movies or church services or some other function. It was a never ending iob. One for which MOMMA and POPPA are grateful As on other ships sweepers man your brooms is heard more frequently than any other call-we will most remember man elevator number one and elevator number one pump room Ott the double - Yes indeed. this is quite a youngster l .X ' f i X e .gb 4 X Q A ' 'ix lf' l it f ss 5.6-iisiisk l f 3 ALT: Ni'55l.T-C i X - QPit?'a'.'a.9'4 rift Yi. , ' l 'ix ff Zi l X ff x NJ ji ltltr f f f X ff!
