Consequently, her cupboard was never bare. We called Supply Uncle Manual , due to his constant reference to the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts Manual! He was reported to have a mattress full of money, but he kept MOMMA on a strict budget and precise allowance. like all girls MOMMA tried to hide her years. That took a lot of cosmetics, paint and lsoapl powder in tremendous quantities. And the roceries! One week, Christmas to New Years, with the holiday meals, the brood consumed l5,000 pounds of spuds, 9 3,000 pounds of turkey, 4,500 pounds of chicken-plus the trimmings. lt took 50,000 bars ol candy a month and l25,000 packages of cigarettes each month to keep the family happy. Then, sundry toilet articles and a variety of uniform clothing kept Uncle Manual on run for sources of supply. Replenishment days saw what practically amounted to an all hands evolution. You might think l am kidding, but we used over three million sheets of paper each month for olllicial business.
