Washtucna opened the 1953 54 Basketball season by dropptng a 60 to 43 decrston at Lacrosse The Wtldcats then entertained Sprague and were beaten 41 to 34 Sprague was the only team that was able to beat Washtucna on the home floor thts season Tucna then tangled wrth Kahlotus and Connell rn the annual league Merry Go Round whtch took place thrs year tn Othello Each team played two other teams for two quarters Washtucna started off by playrng Kahlotus and squeezmg out a ttght 22 to 24 wtn Connell was the Cats next vrctrm The Eagles who prevrously that ntght had beaten Othello were handed a 24 to 15 trounctng The Washtucna Wrldcats emerged from the Merry Go Round as the Champtons The Cats suffered theu' thtrd defeat thrs one at the hands of Almrra Washtucna was hot rn the frrst half and came back for the thrrd pertod leadtng 25 to 22 Scorrng only 9 potnts tn the second half the Wlldcats were snowed under by the btgger Almrra Club The frnal score was 51 to 34 Washtucna took an early lead and held off a late Lamont tally to garn a 59 to 51 w1n for therr frrst wtn on the home maples The Wtldcats avenged an early season defeat by comrng from behtnd and turntng the tables on Lacrosse to the tune of a 46 to 42 wrn Traveltng to Dayton the Wrldcats were edged 54 to 53 rn a thrrller two grft tosses after the game had ended were the margrn of vrctory A fourth pertod rally by the Cats pulled them ahead and gave them a well earned 38 to 32 trtumph over the Ltnd Bulldogs Endrcott was next tn ltne for Tucna wrth two consecutrve games Washtucna won both games by leadtng all the way The lust by a 62 to 53 score and the second game 61 to 56 Washtucna opened tts conference schedule by handrng the Connell Eagles therr frrst defeat of the season The Wrldcats led all the way and were never behrnd The frnal score was Tucna 44 Connell 35 On therr home floor the Wrldcats won therr frrst b1g game wrth Kahlotus 49 to 47 At half ttme Kahlotus led 29 to 18 but Washtucna pulled ahead rn the fourth pertod The Wtldcats won theu thud strarght league game by defeattng the Othello Huskres 65 to 41 At Lamont the Wrldcats beat Lamont 64 to 51 At Kahlotus the Wtldcats were beaten by the Koyotes 41 to 35 The Wtldcats led at half 22 to 15 but the Koyotes surged ahead rn the last half The Wrld cats beat a strong Lrnd team 37 to 35 rn a very close game wtth Walt Gray makrng a basket wrth exactly 1 second left At Othello the Wtldcats beat the I-luskres 54 to 34 Washtucna led at half 24 to 17 but surged ahead rn the last half The Wtldcars won therr most tmportant non conference game by downrng the Rrtzvrlle Bronc s 45 to 41 At the half Rrtzvtlle led 25 to 17 but Washtucna pulled ahead tn the thtrd perrod and the rest of the game was real close At Sprague the Wtldcars swept past the Vrktngs 58 to 54 The Cats pulled away rn the second quarter to lead 34 to 25 at half Sprague crept up on the Wrldcats but the Cats edged them out The Wtldcats beat the Connell Eagles 56 to 34 The Cats led at half 33 to 17 Washtucna trrpped the Koyotes of Kahlotus 41 to 39 tn a play off game for the league champtonshtp The game was played at Lrnd fSub drstrrct gamesj The Wrldcats won therr ftrst game by downtng the Anatone Wrldcats 53 to 37 Washtucna led at halftlme by a score of 25 to 20 Denny Stark made 24 pomts for the Wtldcats The Wrldcats lost to a tall Wartsburg team 45 to 44 Wartsburg led 11 to 9 at the ftrst rest stop and managed a 24 to 21 bulge at halftrme Wtth the Cards leadtng 37 to 26 the Wrldcats slowly caught up rn the fourth pertod, but the Cards pulled the wrn out of the fue
