CBottoml We did it! All hell breaks loose as the Panthers take the Trico crown and qualify for the State Play offs, defeating Castle Rock 21-14. The Panthers turned what started as a fiasco into the most productive football season in a long time. After two crush- ings at the hands of Chehalis and Camas Coach Pettyjohn realigned his team. The new Panthers debuted against Rainier, showing a powerful offense and stingy defense. These two keys carried the Panthers to big wins against their first four Trico foes. The VVashougal team went into their final league contest, tied for first place with a physical Castle Rock Team. This homecoming game meant a league title and a State playoff berth. VVashougal started off quickly, as Jon Friedrich tossed a pass to IVIike Goin and ran for another. Friedrich later scored the deciding points on a Half Back pass from Dan lVlcEnry. The 21-14 victory gave the Panthers their first Trico Crown in four years. Varsity Football 43 44 STATE PLAYOFF , CTopJ IVlr. Varsity Football The Panthers entered the Playoffs with a 6-2 record. ln the first game they faced Port Townsend at Olympia. The Washougal team used two quick scores, A 36 yard Friedrich to Peake pass and a 33 yard interception return by Devin Nagel, to put the Redskins away 14-6. The Panthers next traveled to Burlington to face Lynden in a quarter final tussle. The Friedrich to Peake combination again worked for 6 while Cox and Drake each scored once, in the 21-14 victory over Lynden. The Semi-final game saw the Raymond Seagulls and the Panthers meet in Centralia. Again the Washougal crowd was big as it had been throughout the playoffs. The Panthers led off the scor- ing with a 20 yard TD run. However the defense could not stop the powerful Raymond offense, as they saw them score twice. But the inspired Panthers came back in the final quarter to see Drake boot a field goal. The Panthers got the ball back with 2 minutes left and had a chance to win it. Passes to Goin and lVIcEnry brought the Panthers close but a penalty cut their Comback short. The Final score was 15- 9 . The Panthers gained third Place with the Loss. Jerry Prince stacks up his opponent. The 74-75 Washougal wrestling squad capped a successful season by a second place finish at State. At the Trico league tournament, the wrestlers had 5 individual champs, 3 second places, 1 third place and two fourths. Regionals finished with the Panthers in first, plus sending Brent Drake, Dan Sanders, Karl Stefan, Tony Whitmire, IVlark Roth, lVIark Engleman and Jerry Prince to the state meet. The team took their 8th straight Trico team crown. The team was more of a tourney oriented team, as they boasted many indi- vidual talents, but lacked overall depth. In many key matches Dan Harris, Ron Hig- Wfon, Fred Chappell and Pat Christ played an important role, along with the standouts An important member in vital dual meet strategy was senior Duane Delano. The seniors, Karl Stefan, Brent Drake, Dan Sanders, Pat Christ, Duane Delano and lVlark Engleman had a 36-2 league record behind them for their four years. The highlight of these seniors and the team was their second place finish at the state meet. The individual highlights were Brent Drake state champ, lVIark Roth sec- ond place, Dan Sanders third, Tony Whit- mire fourth and Karl Stefan sixth. 5 2 Tony VVhitmire shows the control that won l him a fourth place in State. GIRUS TRACK T Emerging as one of the top track powers in SVV Washingl ton, the Panther girls had an excellent season. Besides taking the Trico crown, they also copped the sub-dis- trict and district titles. i The Panthers sent a four-girl delegation to the state meet: Traci Tuholsky, Rhonda Brewer, Ruth Peake, and Taina Aho. Traci captured the 100 yard dash title forthe individual highlight. The girls set or tied seven school marks during the sea- son. Coming up with their second successive Trico crown, the 74-75 Panther basket- ball team posted a sharp 19-7 season record, witha 13-1 mark in league. The Panthers also finished second in district, the best finish ever for a Washougal ball club, besides making their fourth straight trip to the state tournament. After splitting their six non-league games, the Panthers went on a tear, winning their first ten league games, including an ex- citing win over then third-ranked Kalama. Outstanding individual efforts by Al Peake Tim Davis, and Jeff Kinart sparked the Panther attack. After a loss to Kalama, they went on to clinch the title. The Panthers took their first two district tests with relative ease to assure them- selves of the trip to state. They then beat Raymond in two overtimes to move into the finals, where they lost to Woodland to finish second. Twe Panthers lost both games at state, but played well in losing their first game, 59-49, to tall Tonasket. Individual honors bestowed on the Panthers included Al Peake, first team All-Trico, Jeff Kinart and Tim Davis, second team, and Dan lVlcEnry, honorable mention.
