' . i - LEXINGTON AND ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY 16 THE UNIVERSITY 1 FOOTBALL It was a bittersweet year for Coach Gary Fallon ' s defending ODAC champions. On a cold, windswept Movember day in Washington, the Generals nnanaged to nail down a third consecutive winning season (5-4) by edging Georgetown 6-0 on a fif- teen yard touchdown pass from sopho- more quarterback John Thompson to se- nior flanker Jerry Thompson. But there were some frustrating mo- ments along the way. We played in a wind which took away most of our passing game. We had troubles with kick-offs, snaps . . . We missed a pair of first-and- goal opportunities in the first half, noted Fallon. The problems encountered on the last day of the season mirrored similar frustra- tions during the season. All-ODAC quarter- back Al Paradise went down with an injury in the homecoming game against Ran- dolph-Macon . . . Hampden-Sydney pre- vailed 3-0 on Wilson Field ... Six second half turnovers undid a 20-7 halftime lead against Sewanee. But as in the final game, the Generals overcame adversity. ' Tm pleased with the way we bounced back . . . our players could have just washed out the remaining games, said Fallon. By season ' s end, the bad taste was gone. The Generals ripped Catholic 41-0 in the final home game for the team ' s seniors. The offense rolled into high gear behind alternating quarterbacks John Thompson, who threw for two touchdowns, and Para- dise, who ran for two scores. Senior end Ken Manganieilo — one of the tri-captains along with Chris Cavalline and senior wide receiver Phil Hrabar — led an inspired de- fensive effort with three quarterback sacks. Senior multi-purpose back Cavalline was named to the All-Conference first team along with Manganieilo, senior offensive tackle Andy Foley and junior center Glenn Kirschner. Foley, Kirschner and Cavalline, who was last year ' s ODAC player of the year, were selected for the second straight nior fullback Ken Robinson contributed 200 yards on the ground, sophomore tail- back Gene Girard picked up 145 yards rushing and freshman Frank Surface added 120 yards. Cavalline and Jerry Thompson led the team in catches with 1 9 a piece. Defensively, the Generals were tops in the conference for the second year in a row. Manganieilo led the way with 55 solo tack- les, including 14 for losses: senior lineback- er Don Kellerman added 49 solo efforts to go with the two fumble recoveries and an interception. Senior safetyman Marty Thomas, who had 36 solo efforts, inter- cepted five passes on the season. Sopho- more cornerback Scott Henderson had four interceptions and junior safety Bob Jenevein three. Second team all ODAC selections in- cluded Jerry Thompson, junior tight end Dave Judge, junior guard Dan Seal, junior linebacker John Cole, senior place kicker Bill Devine, junior guard Craig Reiliy and safety man Thomas. Cavalline closed out a brilliant career at W L The dynamic tailback accumulated 2,086 yards rushing, a school record 152 points scored, a 34.8 yard average on 1 32 career punts and 764 yards on 62 catches. Cavalline led the team in rushing with 483 yards on 155 carries this season. Se- ' U Lower Left: Coaches Boyd Williams. Gary Fallon and Chuck O ' Conneil. Left: ODAC ' s top defense digs in. The harriers had never finished higher than fourth in the ODAC in the league ' s seven year existence, but behind a pair of All-Conference runners they won the conference crown in competi- tion at W L. Junior Angus McBryde and sophomore Frank Pittman paced the Generals in the conference showdown against defending ODAC champion Roanoke College, Lynch- burg, Catholic, Bridgewater, E H and Hanpden-Sydney. McBryde finished sec- ond overall and Pittman fifth in the 56- runner field and were accorded All- Conference honors for their efforts. McBryde, who was All-Conference a year ago as the Generals posted an 8-3 mark in dual meets, ran the 8000 meter course in 26:57, just 17 seconds off the pace. He ran a 25;47 in last year ' s Regionals. Senior captain Jon Kelafant finished ninth, freshman Bob Glenn 12th and fresh- man Ron Moody 17th to complete the Generals scoring. McBryde, Pittman, Kelafant, Glenn and junior Paul Chapman competed in the MCAA Division 111 South Regional Qual- ilying Meet in Lynchburg to conclude the season. The Generals finished fourth in the eleven-team field with McBryde finishing sixth overall. In the 79-runner field Pittman finished 11th, Kelafant 16th, Glenn 31st and Chapman 37th. The Generals ' veteran coach Dick Miller was named ODAC Coach of the Year to cap the storybook season. In his 31 st season as the cross country coach. Miller led the team to a 10-2 dual meet mark, which tied his 1977 team (10-5) for most wins in a sea- son. Posting his eleventh winning season in the last thirteen years, and 22nd winning season overall. Miller also recorded his 180th career cross country meet win. Said Miller, It was simply a sake of how much everybody wanted the title. Our run- ners wanted it more ... Holding the com- petition on the W L course, combined with the fact that the Generals had never finished higher than fourth in the Confer- ence standings, had to make the season even more satisfying to the man who has given so much of his life to W L athletics. SOCCER Seventh-year coach Rolf Piranian ' s senior-laden corps turned In an 8-3-2 record, including three consecutive wins to end the season, and a second place confer- ence finish in a season filled with high points. We said before the season began that to be successful we ' d have to get good play and leadership fronn the seniors. They lived up to that challenge. They ' re the best seniors I ' ve worked with, said Piranian. Returning eighteen lettermen, including seniors Tad Renner on defense, Tom Elder at forward. Goalie Kirk Mancer, nnidfielder MarkCarduner, forward Brad Poorman and forward Jerry Moyer, the team notched several memorable achievements. Piranian ' s veteran crew whipped VMl 3-1 in the second annual United Way Collegiate Cup. Sophomore defenseman Rob Cole- man, junior Ted Petrides and sophomore Gary Clements tallied in the big win. Earlier in the season the Generals had narrowly missed upsetting ODAC power- house Lynchburg College before settling for a 1-1 overtime tie. Freshman Bill Holmes, a starter at forward, scored the lone W L goal. The Generals stayed in the running for a Division 111 play-off spot throughout most of the season, and as it turned out barely missed qualifying for the Va. Intercollegiate Soccer Association Tournament. The Generals set a school record by scoring 38 goals. Poorman led the team with 10 goals, including three in the 7-1 victory over Maryville, and Holmes added five goals. Coleman scored four. Elder four and junior midfielder Roland Simon had three goals. Poorman, Carduner and Moyer led the team with four assists each. Senior goaltender Mancer finished with eleven career shutouts, including a pair in the final two games of the season, to tie Kevin Carney ' s 1980 school record. On the season, Mancer recorded 71 saves and allowed just 11 goals all year. Renner and Carduner were the Generals co-captains. Renner, a four year starter, and Poorman were named first team all ODAC performers while Carduner was named to the second team. It was the second straight first team selection for Renner. Renner, Poorman and Simon were chosen to play in the 12th annual Va. Inter- collegiate Soccer Association East-West All-Star Match at season ' s end. Above: Soccer team celebrates after goal. ' - ' i ■ -.tja f- V is -SJi •r -x- Logging another highly impressive campaign, Page Remiilard ' s water polo stalwarts finished 26- 9 and successfully defended the Southern League Championship. Coming off a 31-5 mark a year ago, the team was led by the first team Division 111 Ail-American Erik Peterson and featured returning starters ju- nior Rand McClain, junior Tim Rock, junior Matt Ravencraft, junior Kevin Kadesky and sophomore Bobby Pearson. One of the season ' s highlights was a big 16-11 win over Slippery Rock State in the Bucknell In- vitational. The long elusive win was the General ' s first in the eight tries against the perennial water polo power. The defending state champions lost this sea- son ' s title match to Richmond 12-11. Remiilard ' s team avenged the setback by rallying from a 5-3 halftime deficit to down Richmond 13-7 in the finals of the Southern League Championships. Wins over Duke 16-5, UlSC-Wilmington 14-4, George Washington 12-1 and (JVA 22-6 led to the title, which gave the Generals a berth in the East- ern Championships in Indianapolis. Peterson, McClain, Ravencraft, Rock and Peter- son were named to the Southern All-League Team. The sixth-seeded Generals met third-seeded Navy in the opening round of the Eastern Cham- pionships. Having lost twice to the Midshipmen during the regular season 19-18 and 18-16, the Generals built an 8-6 third quarter lead. Navy came back to go ahead 11-10, but Peterson fired in a goal to tie the score at 1 1-1 1 with 37 seconds left to play. However, Navy got a man-up goal with just 1 1 seconds to play. A last second shot by Peterson, who had thirteen goals in Indianapolis in three games, caroomed off of the goal post and the Generals went down to a heartbreaking defeat. Those last 11 seconds were the difference between our being third in the championship and being seventh. We ' ll spend the next nine months working to make up those 1 1 seconds, said Re- millard, whose four-year record at W L is a spark- ling 94-35. Peterson and goalie Kevin Kadesky were accorded second team All-East honors for their play in Indianapolis. The Generals lost to Harvard 1 1 -9 after falling to Navy, but came back to romp past Richmond 20-3 and finish seventh in the East. Peterson fired home 1 24 goals on the season to lead the team. McClain scored 81 goals, Raven- craft 81 and Rock 68. .ETBALL Generals ' basketball reached two mile- stones during the 14th annual W L Invita- tional, which the hosts won with a 1 15-73 thumping of Lebanon Valley in the finals. Coach Verne Canfield. in his 1 9th season as the Generals ' basketball mentor, logged his 300th career win. He finished the sea- son with a 310-178 mark and with his 16th winning season at W L The 115 points scored against Lebanon Valley also repre- sented the most points ever scored by a Canfield team at W L. Junior guard Bill Yates was named the tournament MVP. Meanwhile, 6-5 senior forward Brian Hanson, who was accorded first team All- Conference honors for the second year in a row, became only the 12th player in school history to score 1 ,000 points in a career. Hanson, who averaged 16.0 points per game and 8.3 rebounds, was later named to the Division 111 South Atlantic Regional All-Star Team. Led by senior captains Hanson, Frank Eppes and Jay Fechtel, the Generals wound up with a 1 7- 1 mark on the season, bowing out of the Conference cham- pionships with a 65-60 loss to Roanoke College in the semifinals. A late rally by the Generals fell short. An earlier loss to Roanoke, the defending ODAC champions and the second ranked team in the nation, was a season highlight nonetheless. The Generals led Roanoke 20-6, and 41-29 at the half in what Canfield termed, ' One of the best games ever played in the Conference. The Generals were clinging to a 65-61 lead with four minutes left before the Ma- roons went ahead 67-65. Junior forward John Lee Graves tied the score with just over two minutes to play but Roanoke went back in front 69-67. Finally 6-10 senior center Frank Eppes dropped in a layup with eight seconds left to send the game into overtime. After the first overtime period ended in a still unresolved tie, Roanoke took an 83-80 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the sec- ond OT period. But Yates knocked in a long three pointer with seven seconds left to send the game into a third overtime where the Maroons eventually prevailed. Graves M=i(i ?6 points. Vates 25. Page Re- millard ' s swimmers qualified five indi- viduals for the NCAA Division 111 Cham- pionships held March 15-16-17. At the Virginia Senior Championships in Blacksburg, junior Gary Meyer qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and sophomore Ta- ber Smith earned a spot on the 400-yard freestyle relay team. A week earlier at Wilmington, sopho- more Bobby Pearson, sophomore Tim Stanford and freshman John Moody all qualified for the championships. Moody, Pearson, Meyer and Stanford swam in the 800-yard freestyle relay team; Meyer, Smith, Moody and Pearson com- peted in the 400-yard relay event; Moody qualified in the 1 00-yard; and Meyer in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman David Lewis posted a person- al best time in the 200-yard freestyle at the Virginia Championships. WRESTLING Fifth-year Head Coach Gary Franke and company pro- duced an outstanding 9-2 wrestling nnark in 1983, highlight- ed by a second place finish in the W L College Invitational. The second place finish in the eight-team field was the result of eight individual wins, giving the hosts eight top-four finishers. Freshman Larry Anker at 134 won an individual crown; freshman Win Phillips at 158 took second place honors; sophomore Jeff Dixon at 1 90, freshman Andy Foley at 1 26 and junior Tim White at 1 50 won third place honors; and junior team captain Tim Valliere at 167, junior heavyweight Carlton Peebles and freshman Brian Lifsted at 118 recorded fourth place finishes. Other highlights during the season included wins over Davidson 36- 1 9, Loyola 47-3 and Hampden-Sydney 42-8 in a quadrangular match victory that included wins by Dixon, Valliere (3), White (3), Phillips (2), Foley, Anker and senior Win Sisson at 142. Six Generals picked up pins against Furman — Dixon, Anker, Sisson, White, Phillips and Dave Johnston at 177. White, Peebles and Dave Nichols at 134 had pins against LaSalle. In the season finale against Longwood, Peebles scored a two-point takedown in the final seconds of his match to win 7-6 and give the Generals the dual match to win. Five Generals went to Trenton, N.J. to participate in the NCAA Division 111 East Regional Tournament. Dixon was fourth at 190 in the regionals. Above, Left: The Generals in action against Roanoke. BASEBALL Last season Jim Murdock ' s baseball Generals lost six one-run gannes and three two-run games on the way to a 9-20 ledger. Winning half of those games would have given us a winning record, so this spring we ' re going to be more aggressive at the plate, on the base paths and on the mound. We ' ll see if we can turn those close games in our favor, says the second-year head coach. With three returning pitchers and six other starters back, the Generals should turn things around in 1983. Heading the list of returnees are senior co-captains Jody Harris and Chris Caval- line. Harris begins his third year at shortstop after batting .260 a year ago (he hit .348 in 1 981 ) and swiping 1 2 bases in 1 5 attempts. Cavalline will be the regular centerfielder in 1983, where his speed can be utilized the best. Last season the versatile star split time between second base and rightfield. He hit .340 and ripped four home runs a year ago, following marks of .360 in 1 981 and .348 in ,:r -.-,i ' V • ' V ' i T 1980. The other returning starters are se- nior Jim Daley (.260 in 1982 and .333 in 1981) who switches from rightfield to leftfield this season; Junior Dave Warrenfeltz, who begins his third sea- son at third base; Junior Kevin Golden will be at second base, where he teams well with shortstop Harris; Junior Mike Walsh, who will make the move from leftfield to first base this spring; sopho- more Mike Jacoby, who will be the starting catcher after duty last spring as the double-header catcher; and freshman Hugh Finkelstein will open in rightfield. The Generals have a wealth of pitch- ing talent, led by sophomore Billy White, who was 1 -3 a year ago and led the staff with a 3.69 ERA in 53.7 in- nings. Seniors Mary Thomas and Jim Stanley are joined by senior newcomer Pat Jordan and freshman Kirk Breen to form the nucleus of the staff. M( ' ■4ff4 4fi m m 1? GOLF It was another winning season for veteran coach Buck Leslie ' s linksnnen in 1982, who finished the regular season with a 6-0 dual match ledger before winding up third in the ODAC tournament. While finishing just two shots behind conference champion Lynchburg at the tournament in Farmville, the team placed two members on the All-Conference squad. The Generals who earned the con- ference honors were Jim Kaplan (80-72, fifth place) and senior Bill Alfano, who finished sixth overall in tournament play. Leslie, who has led the Generals to an 87-11 dual match record and two confer- ence titles in his eight seasons since replac- ing the legendary Cy Twombly, has three lettermen returning in 1983: senior Tim Webb and juniors Bruce Blythe and Whit Kelly. Joining this trio will be seniors Frank English and Mike Gregory. Blythe and Kelly have been named co- captains for 1983. £n$ TENNIS In his fourth year at the helm of the tennis team, Coach Gary Franke led a well- balanced squad to a third-place ODAC fin- ish in 1982. Four Generals took second place honors. Wes Younge teamed with junior Jim Irwin for runner-up honors in doubles. Sophomores Andy Haring and Steve Bendheim were runners-up in singles. For 1983 ' s 23-match schedule, Franke has plenty of talent available. The team is led by junior captain Craig Cannon, Irwin and Haring. They are joined by senior Steve Denny and junior Charlie Kalocsay, both two-year lettermen. The squad is rounded out by sopho- mores Van Archer, Anthonie Frens and Gordon Ogden, and freshmen Scott Adams and Jim Culnane. Far Left. Top: Sophomore pitcher Billy White. TRACK Head Coach Morris Aldridge has plenty of talent — including 14 team members who scored in dual matches in 1982 — returning from his 7-2, third-place ODAC outdoor track team. Junior Angus McBryde won the 1500- meter at the conference championships last spring; Senior Alan Armitage finished second in the 1 10-meter high hurdlej and third in the 60-yard hurdles in the indoor conference meet; Senior Gene Fellin was second in the pole vault (indoor and out- door championship meets) and senior Sparky Anderson finished second in the javelin. School record holders include Armitage, one of the team ' s tri-captains along with senior weightman Eric Nelson and McBryde, who holds the record (15.7) in the 110-meter hurdles; Fellin, whose 14-0 is the top school pole vault mark; and junior Kevin Kadesky, sophomore Chris Busbee and sophomore Chris Ives, three members of the record-holding 400-meter relay team (44.02). Also on hand for the Generals will be junior weightman Charlie Alcorn (third place conference finishes in the shot and discus); junior Paul Chapman, a distan- ceman; sophomore Mark Pembroke, who finished third in the 800-meters in the con- ference championships; and sophomore Martin Pruitt. Sophomore Scott Henderson, who was third in the 400-meter hurdles in the cham- pionships and sophomore Frank Pittman will also be counted upon for scoring. l ' 4-f r 1 ah ' .i! U CROSSE Led by tri-captains Rob Staugaitis, Mike Schuler and Mike Pressier, the 1982 la- crosse Generals posted a 9-4 mark and just missed an invitation to the NCAA Division I playoffs. We had a spot at being selected for the playoffs and were a little disappointed, but we weren ' t disappointed in our season, said Coach Jack Emmer. The Generals got off to a splendid 6-1 start before losses to CJVA, CJNC and Syra- cuse dimmed playoff hopes considerably. After a frustrating 22-8 setback against Virginia, the Generals tried a slowdown against top-ranked North Carolina. Washington and Lee hung close, but even- tually wound up on the short end of an 1 1 -8 score. Then came a heartbreaking 15-14 loss to Syracuse and W L tumbled to 12th in the polls with a 6-4 record. Midfielder John Doub, one of this year ' s co-captains along with senior midfielder John Tunney, said, We came to play and they came to play ... we lost it right at the end. The guys were a little down after the Far Left: Two Generals take a water break at Wilson Field. Left: Junior Tim Schurr. Bottom Left: Senior Al Armitage. Below: Senior Joe Seifert. P mmm Syracuse game, he said. But the Generals rebounded to topple, Raonoke College 11-10, and Hofstra 1?- 10, before routing UMBC 19-8 on the sea- son ' s final day. With a possible playoff berth on the line, the Generals came out and jumped to a quick 8-1 lead and never re- laxed against a fine Retrievers team that had given CJVA all it wanted. Clnfortunately the romp was overlooked by the selection committee. Navy, which had nipped the Generals 1 1 - 1 in overtime, was awarded the eighth seed in the tourna- ment. The Generals face 1983, a touch sched- ule that includes CIVA, Maryland, GNC, and Syracuse without a proven feeder. Gradua- tion losses included quarterback Staugaitis, the all-time leading assist-man in the school ' s history; John Sancilio, who had more goals in one season (35) than any midfielder in W L history; and Schul- er, of whom Emmer said, He possessed more fundamental skill than any member of the team. Together the three combined for 58 of the team ' s 90 assists. Pressier, a three year attackman who was switched to defense for his final season, big defenseman Dave Nickels, and goalie Ware Palmer also were lost to graduation. Emmer, in his eleventh season as head coach and looking for a return to post- season play after a two-year absence, will look to senior middle Doub, senior middle Tunney, senior attackman Geoff Wood and senior defenseman Newton Kendrick for leadership this season. Junior goalie Phil Aiken, junior attackman Lee Heimert (28 goals in ' 82), senior middle John Buttarazzi and sophomore attackman Rod Santo- massimo also are counted on to be key performers. On defense, Emmer can count on Veter- ans Steve Conboy, Tim Schurr, Don Richardson and Bill Sharp. Face-off spe- cialists Tunney and sophomore Rich Schoenberg are proven performers and Emmer has no need for worry here. He must replace Staugaitis, and he will be looking to senior Joe Seifert, senior Mike Lewers and Santomassimo to fill the quar- terback shoes. Huntley was no longer the pres- ident of Washington and Lee University. President Reagan and Tip O ' Neill agreed on a budget. Sweet Briar was a hotbed of sexual activity and cow tipping. A ten year theft ring in the Lexington Police Depart- ment was exposed, and the Washington Redskins won the Superbowl. Crazy, huh? Wasn ' t it Missing Persons who said, Life is so strange when you don ' t know? That ' s the kind of year 1 982-83 was. A year that saw Kennesaw, Georgia, require every head of a household to own a firearm ... a month-long NFL players strike ... the end of the Pavillion party at W L and Easter ' s weekend at CJVA. A year of change? No, not really. Team- ster President Roy L Williams became the third of the last four of the unio n ' s presi- dents to be convicted on federal charges. George Wallace was elected Governor of Alabama. Some things never change. The state of the economy dominated newspaper headlines. Unemployment hit double figures for the first time in 42 years; the federal budget suffered a 1 10.66 billion dollar deficit in 1982. Reagan and O ' Neill fought bitterly over taxes, a jobs bill, social security and how much to spend on de- vices designed to terminate human lives. Early in 1983, both sides had reached a compromise that included a smaller in- crease in defense spending. But 1 982-83 may be remembered as the awakening of a serious anti-nuclear move- ment. President Reagan ' s plan to base 100 MX Peacekeeper missiles in a Dense Pack of silos in Wyoming met stiff resis- tance in Congress. Some W L under- weenies ' suggested Lewis Hall might be better. The beauty of the idea was the frati- cide effect: incoming Soviet missiles de- stroy each other before knocking out the friendly warheads. Congress decided it needed more work. A 66-year-old hotel maintenance man from Miami Beach, Florida held the atten- tion of the country for 10 hours and asked that a nationwide dialogue be held on the dangers of nuclear war. He managed to get his message into millions of American homes by threatening to blow-up the Washington Monument. The Washington and Lee campus felt the stirrings as well. In early December, over 100 people crowded into a classroom to hear a highly technical discussion on a nu- clear arms freeze proposal. One teenage girl asked, Aren ' t you concerned with the deaths of nuclear war and human extinc- tion? I guess she missed the point. In February, Contact brought Dr. Roger C. Molander, the founder of Ground Zero, to Lee Chapel. He began Ground Zero, he said, to educate people about the dangers of nuclear war. He brought this message, Muclear war is the ultimate crime against humanity and clearly does not have to happen. Opposite: President Reagan and House Speaker Tip OMelll battled for political power. Above: Dr. Roger C. Molander chats with a student at the Lambda Chi house. Left: Redskin Fans could come out of the closet. The year at W L began with the announcement of a new president. John D. Wilson, executive vice president and uni- versity provost at Virginia Tech, became the eighth president of Washington and Lee since Robert E. Lee. Robert E.R. Huntley was retiring after 15 years as president and a highly successful 10-year development drive. In the year ' s first Playboy issue, W L stu- dents learned that Sweet Briar College had earned the dubious distinction of being ranked 7th among 20 colleges in sexual temperature. Playboy described the Briar Patch as smoldering at 130 degrees: and if W L men ever wondered what to do in Sweet Briar, Va. now they knew. Playboy said a favorite pastime was cow tipping. ' Maybe we had something else in mind. But W L lost an institution for most of the year. On October 6th, the Pavillion fea- tured the Robbin Thompson Band with special guest the Police. ABC officials raided the party sponsored by some W L students and took away the beer. Six stu- dents were charged with ABC violations and the Pavillion party as we knew and loved it was gone. Wilson, right, and James Ballengee answer reporters ' questions at press conference. An investigation into the Lexington Police Department tiiat began in the spring of 1982 concluded this year in 1 1 criminal trials. The trials uncovered a theft ring that had been operating within the department throughout the seventies and early eighties. One young officer testified of an uneasi- ness that other officers might be slow in responding as a backup because they were too busy commiting crimes. Although the thefts usually involved small items — chain saws, lawn mowers, food — it was enough to force 13 of 20 officers off the police force. Lexington ' s Finest became Lexington ' s Fewest. Chief of Police James Kirby was not one of those. Kirby maintained throughout that he had no knowledge whatsoever that 70 percent of his police force was regularly stealing things from the Lexington com- munity for more than 10 years. When testimony indicated that Kirby may have known about it , Mayor Charles Phillips ordered a private investigation into the office of Chief of Police; the results were never made public. Kirby resigned on January 6th and landed a new job that same day — Special Inspector for the Lex- ington Police Department. Dr. Wilson assumed the office on Janu- ary 18th, and the transition was smooth despite a few bad omens. The day he moved into the Lee House the university ' s telephone system broke down and most of the collonade was dark- ened by a sudden power failure. On the following day, Dr. Wilson returned from an early morning jog to find himself locked out of General Lee ' s home. Undaunted, Dr. Wilson made his first public appearance as president on Found- er ' s Day, January 20th, pledging to con- tinue the prosperous tradition at W L 54 The 1 983 Superdance for Muscular Dystrophy was the most successful to date, raising a record 532,533. Many W L students were snowbound for the first weekend of winter break by one of tine worst snow storms in recent mem- ory. Tfie storm dumped 18-20 inches on Lexington, stranding most of the helpless Southerners. Randolph-Macon Woman ' s College was forced to postpone Senior Din- ner Dance weekend — it was either that or hold it sans food, music and dates. But Fancy Dress springs eternal and we enjoyed unusually warm weather for the big weekend. The SAB put together an impres- sive show that featured Guy Lombardo ' s Royal Canadians, INRBQ, the Voltage Brothers, the Mighty Invaders and the Deal. Tree limbs and Spanish moss in the main ball room reflected the Old South theme: Waiting for the Robert E. Lee, An Evening Along the Mississippi. The Robert E. Lee was a tight ship; the SAB turned the first profit on the event that anyone could re- member. Meanwhile, the most important issue on everyone ' s mind was resolved. The fresh- man class managed to pull off a successful pavilion party — successful in the sense that no one was arrested. The pavilion was not dead as a party spot, only dormant for most of the year. With spring came the hope for bigger and better beer (grain?) bashes at W L ' s favorite get-drunk sweatbox. And so a year began . . . 56 Far Left: Senior Glenn Drake cheers for NRBQ at Fancy Dress. Chief Editorial Assistant Scott John Fitzgerald ' 84, Business Manager The 1983 Calyx is the product of about 600 feet of film, long hours in the darkroonn and the efforts of many people. The book is a tribute to an unusually talented group of photographers of whom the Class of 1983 and all of Washington and Lee can be proud. It has been my privilege to assemble their photographs in some coherent man- ner as the 1982-1983 school year. Most of the fraternity portraits were made by Peter Cronin using a Speed Graflex 4x5 camera. Larry Duffee also contributed to the fraternity section. All of the sports copy was written by David Murray. Drawings of President Reagan and House Speaker O heill were made by Markham S. Pyle. Senior portraits were made by Patrick Hine- ly and Charles Mason. The Solzhenitsyn quote on page 1 38 was pointed out to us by Bill Peery ■83. The staff would like to give special thanks to W. Patrick Hinely, chief university photo- grapher, for his outstanding photography, time and patience. Special thanks also go to Ken Ries and the W L Sports Information Office for sports photography and data. Finally we extend our gratitude to Charlie Garrison and the Hunter Publishing Company, Mike Collingwood and everyone at Andre Studios, Fontaine Bostic, Carole Chappel, Mike Cap- peto (for paying the rent on our office), Pat Larew, Rom Weath- erman, all of the janitors in the Student Center, Domino ' s Pizza, Lloyd ' s, and the contributing parents who made this book possible.
