DEDICATION 16 Rupert Latture and Washington and Lee University have been a part of each other for many years. He came to this campus from his eastern Tennessee home in 1911, and when his photograph began to appear in student publications it was the likeness of a handsome, vigorous campus leader who would crown a truly distinguished undergraduate career by becoming the valedictorian of the class of 1915. A recent photograph of Rupert Latture that has appeared in several current publications shows a still handsome and vigorous man, proudly displaying a new T-Shirt that proclaimed in large type — I MOVED IT! His shirt referred to the moving of the library, but the words and the man were never more appropriately matched. Rupert Latture has been a prime mover at Washington and Lee almost all of his life. As a senior, he and his roommate decided there should be some society that would recognize outstanding campus leadership, so they and thirteen others founded the Alpha Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. After meritorious service in France during World War I and its aftermath, he joined the Washington and Lee faculty in 1920 and thus began a distinguished teaching career that would span 42 years. He was a teacher and much more. He was a friend to every student, a trusted advisor to all who sought his wise counsel. In 1962, at age 70, Rupert Latture retired as head of the Department of Political Science. He became a special assistant to the President, and his assistance has been special indeed. When freshmen and families arrive in September, he is there at the freshman dorm to greet them and make them welcome. When alumni return to the campus, his is the familiar face to every student generation, and the reunions are warm and nostalgic. He carries on a lively correspondence with dozens of older alumni, maintaining and cultivating a level of interest among them that no other person at Washington and Lee could do as well. A significant fraction of Washington and Lee ' s financial strength today can be traced directly to Mr. Latture ' s tireless efforts. He has indeed moved this University, all for the better. With admiration, pride, and great respect, the 1981 Calyx staff dedicates this year ' s book to Rupert Nelson Latture.
