He came to this campus from his eastern Tennessee home in 1911, and when his photograph began to appear in student publications it was the likeness of a handsome, vigorous campus leader who would crown a truly distinguished undergraduate career by becoming the valedictorian of the class of 1915. A recent photograph of Rupert Latture that has appeared in several current publications shows a still handsome and vigorous man, proudly displaying a new T-Shirt that proclaimed in large type โ I MOVED IT! His shirt referred to the moving of the library, but the words and the man were never more appropriately matched. Rupert Latture has been a prime mover at Washington and Lee almost all of his life. As a senior, he and his roommate decided there should be some society that would recognize outstanding campus leadership, so they and thirteen others founded the Alpha Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. After meritorious service in France during World War I and its aftermath, he joined the Washington and Lee faculty in 1920 and thus began a distinguished teaching career that would span 42 years. He was a teacher and much more. He was a friend to every student, a trusted advisor to all who sought his wise counsel. In 1962, at age 70, Rupert Latture retired as head of the Department of Political Science. He became a special assistant to the President, and his assistance has been special indeed. When freshmen and families arrive in September, he is there at the freshman dorm to greet them and make them welcome. When alumni return to the campus, his is the familiar face to every student generation, and the reunions are warm and nostalgic. He carries on a lively correspondence with dozens of older alumni, maintaining and cultivating a level of interest among them that no other person at Washington and Lee could do as well. A significant fraction of Washington and Lee ' s financial strength today can be traced directly to Mr. Latture ' s tireless efforts. He has indeed moved this University, all for the better. With admiration, pride, and great respect, the 1981 Calyx staff dedicates this year ' s book to Rupert Nelson Latture. Fall Administration Faculty . . . Seniors Winter . Organizations Fraternities . Ronald Reagan ' s defeat of Jimmy Carter was cer- tainly no surprise to most of this strongly Republi- can school, but the overwhelming landslide and Jimmy ' s very early concession in mid-evening did take many by surprise. Reagan captured 483 elector- al votes to Carter ' s mere 49, and 51% of the popular vote compared to only 41% for Jimmy. In fact, Carter only received 67% of the Democratic vote as com- pared to 79% in 1976. One major problem was the low voter turnout, only 53%, even lower than the 54.3% turnout the previous election year. But the fact remains that Carter was the first Democratic President voted out of office since Grover Cleveland in 1888 and only the tenth President to be voted out of office in the entire history of the United States. Another great surprise was the fact that for the first time since the early 1950 ' s, the Republican Party also gained a majority in the Senate. November 4th, 1980 was most assuredly a night for the Republi- cans. 37 ADMINISTRATION 38 AND FACULTY 39 Robert E.R. Huntley, President of the University Mr. and Mrs. Robert E.R. Huntley Rupert N. WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT To the Class of 1981: As I write this in February for publication in May, there is still a residue of optimism among many of us that carries over from the heady events of January 20th and the virtually simultaneous release of the hostages in Iran and the inauguration of a new president. Optimism is a fragile flower among some, blooming easily but withering at the slightest adversity; among others it is hardy like a weed, almost impossible to suppress and thriving on the most improbable nutrients. My optimism with regard to the future of the liberally educated man and woman is of this latter kind, as is my optimism about the future of institutions such as ours whose primary purpose is education in the liberal arts and sciences. Although emphasis elsewhere frequently seems to be directed toward training rather than education, I am con- vinced that the kind of opportunity offered at Washington and Lee will become an increasingly treasured experience. You of the Class of 1981, perhaps more so than any other class in our long succeccion of graduates, have had access to greater resources for the development of the liberally educated mind. You were the first beneficiaries of new library and academic facilities, stunning both in their design and function. Our faculty has never been stronger, either in its credentials and experience or in its commitment to undergraduate teaching. Important new programs, such as Asian Studies and Soci- ety and the Professions, have matured as integral parts of the academic environment here. All alumni believe their years here were special, but I believe yours here were more special than most. I am certain your CALYX will capture graphically a lare measure of this speciality. I am optimistic and confident when I conisder the promise of your individual futures and the portent this holds for Washington and Lee ' s renewable strengths. I wish you well. jjStatrX MW 125 ' . - w ' ' โฒ . , .;. p fc ' a ; ยฃ I V ?L V- fe - โ ' ' ยซI ยฃ Jafrfe. V iย w 3 ja X. - h m4i fcr โ r it 1 -, - flโข .nM. This season was earmarked by ex- citing, last-minute comebacks which left fans breathless and oppo- nents demoralized. The Generals al- ways seemed to come up with that extra effort needed late in the con- test, when the game was on the line. Offensive standouts included senior co-captain Chris Leiser, who gained a team-high 555 yards rushing. Tailback Chris Cavalline totaled 537 yards and ten touch- downs despite missing three games with an injury. Quarterback Rich Hachenburg completed 57.5 per- cent of his passes, many of which went to tight end Mike Fogarty. A tight General Defense was anchored by linebacker John McKee, who led the team with 69 tackles, and classmate Mike Press- ler, a defensive lineman who reg- istered 62 tackles. Losing only six seniors, and with an impressive complement of re- serves waiting in the wings, the Generals may well effect an end to their losing ways of the past, and prove that this season ' s success was no fluke. Spearheading the offensive attack were sophomore Brad Poorman, who led the team in assists (6) and total points (18). However, the highlight of the season was the sparkling play of goalie Kevin Carney, who established a school record with 407 career saves. Sophomore Tad Renner and freshman Mark Sullivan led a stingy No Goal Patrol defense. With most of the squad returning in the fall, the soccer team hopes to capture that elusive laurel: and NCAA bid. The Generals finished second to arch-rival University of Richmond in both the Virginia State Championships and the Southern League Championships. The season was essentially a learning experience for the young squad, which was stocked with nine fresh- men and absolutely no seniors. The fact that the Gener- als emerged with a winning mark despite such a young team is a credit to second year coach Page Remillard and his players. Stars included junior Mike Bernot, sophomore Bob Marshall, and freshmen Tim Rock, Don Smith, Andy Gates, Rand McClain, and the Kadesky brothers, Kevin and Keith. With all its players returning a year more experienced, the water polo team looks to not only defeat nemesis Richmond next year, but prove itself as a major southern water polo power. 18 Johns Hopkins 7 Harvard 5 Brown 7 MIT 13 Princeton 7 Penn State 5 Slippery Rock 8 Millersville 6 Cornell 12 James Madison 9 Ga. The first and most noteworthy change was the university ' s arrogation of maintenance for fraternities. The unpopular and infamous Fraternity Maintenance Plan was dropped like a bomb on fraternity members. Frat rats, as some faculty members called the fun-loving minks, responded loudly with much venom, but to no avail. The maintenance plan was a ' fait accompli ' backed by stern words from the hill and President Huntley. The subject matter and specifics of the plan were debated frequently, resulting in a few changes being made, but the handling of the issue left many students wondering how much real respon- sibility and input they had in regard to student government at Washington and Lee. While fraternity members struggled to organize rush and undermine the maintenance plan, the Publications Board called the Executive Commit- tee to discuss the EC ' s decision to retroactively take salaries away from business managers and editors of the school ' s publications. The EC over- ruled the salary decision made last year returning salaries to the 1980-81 publications people. However, they let the Pub Board know that they opposed, in principle, the idea of salaries. The Pub Board met, reached a similar decision and ruled out salaries for future editors and business managers. No sooner had the earlier news events died out than the problem of crime stepped in. A rape was re- ported, only to have charges, tests and facts obscured by a muddled investigation by the Lexington Police Department. The varsity football team took its toll on rivals and got off the its best start since 1963. The season was highlighted by a last munite touch and go vic- tory over hated rival Hampden-Sydney. Parents weekend started with a bang when the Ring- turn Phi ran an article on alco- holism and W L. Some pa- rents seemed surprised to hear about drinking here, but just as many saw Mink drink- ing habits as nothing unusual. The upshot of the incident was an investigation by Eric Myers of the EC. Fraternity members drank anyway and once again the police took enough time off from writing tickets to arrest fraternity presidents for noise code violations. Lexington has not had much success prosecuting fraternities for noise violations because of an error in enforcing the noise code. Interfraternity Council President Monty Briscoe looked into the matter and came up with a possible solution. However, when houses made too much noise on a weeknight, somebody got arrested. A quiet development this year was the faculty ' s acceptance or exasperation with weeknight parties. Little or no flak was caught about the weeknight blow-outs. Homecoming Weekend followed close on the heels of parent ' s weekend and much to student ' s chagrin, the featured band of the event, The New Riders of The Purple Sage, or NRPS for short, cancelled out at the last minute. Calling on some mysterious inner power, SAB co-chairman Jamie Small lined up Sea Level. The band played so well with an astounding degree of intensity that no one really missed the sage brush cowtenders, or whatever the bush league band was called. As November rolled around students made no secret of the candidate they would choose for President. Contact presented two speakers on the economic aspects of the election. Republican Senator Richard Schweiker and Democratic Senator Adlai Stevenson, neither of whom pulled any surprises or punched below the belt. Stevenson foreshadowed events as he slipped early in his speech and referred to the competition, Ronald Reagan, as the President. Schweiker simply outlined the Republican political plat- form and why its economic aspects would help save the country from inflation. G Gordon Liddy, the hottest item on college campuses in the fall of 1980, visited W L and gave a conservative speech which earned a standing ovation. Only one student blatantly criticized Liddy, commenting he was sorry Liddy did not spend more time in j ail for his role in Watergate. A London Times reporter noted in his article about Liddy that W L was one of the most conservative campuses in the nation. One of the most interesting events of the year was a hostage crisis in Lexington. The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity carried out its annual activity of kidnapping its visiting national secretary. He threatened to take legal ac- tion, but the Interfraternity Council stepped in and dealt Pi Kappa Phi a punishment which seemed to please most parties involved. Conspicuously quiet during the ordeal was self-appointed faculty spokesman, Pi Kappa Phi advisor to the Interfraternity Council, Holt Merchant. He did say some- thing about an opera. Things were stirred up again when Executive Committee President Bob Willis went Before the IFC and stated that an unnamed person dropped a hallucinogenic drug into a guest ' s drink at a fraternity party. The guest, according to Willis, did not know about the drug and subsequently had problems resulting in the student ' s withdrawal from school. The unusual intrusion by the EC and nebulous intent of the message left everyone wondering what had really happened. Later in December, students were shocked by the news of John Lennon ' s death. Across the university students pri- vately and publicly mourned the death of one of our genera- tion ' s most popular spokes- men, musicians and peace- niks. When classes resumed in January, students discovered that a senior, Ed Johnson, had received a Rhodes Scho- larship. But Johnson ' s congra- tulations turned to conde- mnation following an inter- view with the Ring-turn Phi. Johnson later denied making certain comments to Phi re- porter Bill Whalen, but the newspaper stood behind its reporter and the validity of the article. As late as Fancy Dress the letters were still rolling in to the Phi. Another fraternity sprang to life but was denied permission to move into its old house. The Superdance was held again this year, raising over $22,000. The Muscular Dystrophy Association found avid supporters here at Washington and Lee. Even more avid and more numerous than the superdance fans were minks who turned out for Fancy Dress 1981 โ On Boradway. John Prine was the featured singer on Thursday night and believe it or not, he did not cancel his performance. Opinion seemed overwhelmingly in favor of Prine and the most recent edition of Fancy Dress. However, questions were raised about the Student Activities Board and the handling of its budget. As spring appeared on the horizon, the lacrosse team destroyed its first opponent, the Virginia Beach Lacrosse Club. Despite the loss of many top players to graduation, head coach Jack Emmer continued to recruit top level athletes who worked well with the experienced upperclassmen. New blood was also brought to the baseball team. Virginia Military Institute graduate and National Football League prospect Craig Jones took over for former head coach Chuck Kroll. The year in retrospect proved to be a year of hope and new faith. With the release of the American Hostages in Iran and the inauguration of a new President, a general feeling of national unity arose. 280 For those of you who decided not to keep a scrap- book this year (I can ' t imagine why), I offer you the 1981 Calyx. You ' ll probably not find as many pic- tures of yourself, your girlfriend, your dog, or your car (not necessarily in order of importance) as if you had kept a private volume, but I hope this yearbook will help bring back good memories of 1980-81 at W L. There isn ' t much copy; the photographs should tell the stories. This being the case, you won ' t find many reminders of the dreaded all- nighters, the 2:00 A.M. return-roadtrips, the 4:00 A.M. pledge raids, the 11:02 P.M. phone calls to the H.T.H., the 12:45 A.M. munch-outs at Spanky ' s, the 8:00 A.M. hangovers every Thursday, etc. I guess you ' ll occasionally have to reach out and touch someone to remind a fellow Mink of the awesome roadtrips the two of you made to Hollins, or the all-nighters the two of you pulled just to hook the Ax, or the time you nailed his Topsiders to the floor during Homecoming (sorry). Anyway, we do have F.D., Homecoming, Superdance, Frats, Lax, Hoops, and much more. Borrowing a phrase of an ancient Calyx editor, I hope that in years to come when you are in your study with your grandson (or secretary) on your lap, this book will help you re-live some of the good ole ' days at W L. This book is the product of many. I owe thanks to the entire staff, the patrons, and the advertisers.
