What matter if I live it all once more? Endure that toil of growing up: The ignominy of boyhood; the distress Of boyhood changing into man; The unfinished man and his pain Brought face to face with his own clumsiness; The finished man among his enemies? — How in the name of Heaven can he escape That defiling and disfigured shape The mirror of malicious eyes Casts upon his eyes until at last He thinks that shape must be his shape? And what ' s the good of an escape If honour find him in the wintry blast? I am content to live it all again And yet again, if it be life to pitch Into the frog-spawn of a blind man ' s ditch. A blind man battering blind men; Or into that most fecund ditch of all, The folly that man does Or must suffer, if he woos A proud woman not kindred of his soul. I am content to follow to its source Every event in action or in thought; Measure the lot; forgive myself the lot! When such as I cast out remorse o great a sweetness flows into the breast We must laugh and we must sing. We are blest by everything. Everything we look upon is blest. William Butler Yeats After four years of bulldozers, jackhammers, smoke and dust, the Class of 1979 bids farewell to McCormick Library and welcomes her successor, a modern gargantuan structure heralded as the symbol of a new age for W L. Succeeding generations of students may look forward to the use of a facility which seats 800 (and includes 560 individual carrels), is fully carpeted and airconditioned, and is open twenty-four hours. If your editors have done their jobs well, as I am certain they have, you will find captured on these pages the essence of a year at Washington and Lee, a distillation of the ways in which you spent your time, both pro- ductively and otherwise. There will be the suggestion of opportunities seized and others that slipped by, on campus and elsewhere. Familiar faces will remind you of friendships that last and acquaintances that pass. Striking photographs will recall a beauty of time and place that perhaps is taken for granted on a day to day basis. Yearbooks, though, can mirror more than a given year. Sometimes, if artfully done, they reveal the values and concerns of an entire student generation. Those of us who remain at Washington and Lee longer than you can track a significant measure of our change through the images of your faces and activities. For us, the yearbook becomes something of a historical volume, a frequently used reference book. But for you, your yearbook is. especially now, a book for fun, and then later, a book for remembering. I hope there is much about this year and recent others here that will be pleasant for you to remember. In a period of extensive physical development on the campus, you have been sub- jected to dislocations and inconvenience, yet I hope you have grasped the necessity and perceived the good that will result. It is exciting to think of the impact our new library will have on the way we study and learn. This is written in November for you to read in May — in between will fall what may prove to be one of the most memorable days in the Univer- sity ' s long history. You and your classmates will have had an opportunity to participate in the great move from McCormick to the new library. I am certain that elsewhere in this volume there will be recorded the events of that day — the problems and frustrations, the achievements and suc- cesses, and the good feeling of enjoying doing something useful and praiseworthy, of getting the job done. Perhaps for many of you such a day might characterize your entire Washington and Lee experience. I hope so. And I wish each of you well. J f. W : i mm P l Sj ' r Dougl: as Bryan Wyatt. Let me say that, in retrospect, it has indeed been reward- ing for me to edit the 1979 Calyx. Over the past nine months my feelings have been many and varied. Deadlines were hectic at best and often frustrating, yet the experience of working with a team was enjoyable. And in the end the sense of accomplishment is always pleasing. I cannot begin to take all of the credit; this book is the product of the great support I received from the staff and contributors. I wish to offer a special thanks to Rob Calvert for the cover sketch; John cole for his cartoons; Flamer for his ■' Evil Eye Services ; Andre Studios for another fine job on the undergrads; Pat Hinely for senior portrait services; and finally Charlie Garrison of Hunter Publishing Company for his great patience. I have attempted to compile in these pages an accurate record of the 1978-1979 school year, for I believe that a yearbook ' s value lies not in its initial effect but in the service which it renders in years to come. I hope that this Calyx will serve to provide each of us with pleasant remembrances of our years at Washington and Lee. . wds - ' i - L . ' 1 A little Learning is a dang ' rous Thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian Spring; There shallow Draughts intoxicate the Brain, And drinking largely sobers us again. Fir ' d at first Sight with what the Muse imparts, In fearless Youth we tempt the Heights of Arts; While from the bounded Level of our Mind, Short Views we take, nor see the Lengths behind. But more advanc ' d, behold with strange Surp rize New. distant Scenes of endless Science rise! So pleas ' d at first, the towring Alps we try. Mount o ' er the Vales, and seem to tread the Sky; Th Eternal Snows appear already past. And the first Clouds and Mountains seem the last: But those attain ' d. we tremble to survey The growing Labours of the lengthen ' d Way, Th ' increasing Prospect tires our wandring Eyes, Hills peep o ' er Hills, and Alps on Alps arise!
