These festivals were origi- nally drunken orgies in the streets, with the crowds carrying huge phallic symbols and screaming insults at all who refused to participate. The comic plays which evolved were therefore bawdy and fast-paced. The spirit was high, and the cast enjoyed performing as much as the audience did watching. Unfortunately, Aristophanes wrote for a small city where every audience member was familiar to all others, at least by name and reputation. This gave the playwright the opportunity to use personal, inside jok es to supplement the main sexual and verbal humor of his script. The Greek is filled with refer- ences to specific people, as well as with hundreds of puns. Many of these are lost in translation. The purpose of this production of The Birds at the University Theatre was to perform the play in the spirit which the playwright intended. The modernized translation by William Arrowsmith and numerous changes by director and cast were designed to make the stock elements of the play more obvious to a modern audience. Many of the personal references were cut, and new puns were added. The caricatures of each part were also modernized (as with one bird imitating Groucho Marx) to allow the audience to identify them more easily. This production was also a tremendous educa- tional experience. For the actors, wearing face masks and phalluses gave an entirely different approach to character devel opment than modern theatre requires. Facial reactions and thought processes were ignored, and vocal variety with phys- ical action was stressed. This was also an experi- ence for the director, who had never been formally trained in the use and handling of a chorus or in the use of face masks. Madison; 9-9, Centre; 14-26, Randolph-Macon; 14-27, Southwestern; 13-29, Hampden-Sydney; 3-13, Sewanee; 0-54, Bucknell; 0-35, Denison; 3-26, Coast Guard; 28-26, Georgetown. Hopes were high on August 26 when nearly a hundred young men reported for four weeks of preseason workouts. In an effort to turn the W L football program around, Head Coach Bill McHenry and his staff had spent the off-season recruiting as well as encouraging a rigorous weight program. The result was a youthful and strengthened look for the 75 Generals. The experienced core of the previous year ' s team returned, giving the offense a strong passing attack featuring senior tri-captain Jack Berry at quarterback with senior split end Mark George and junior tight end Tony Perry. The Generals came through preseason practices and scrimmages in excellent physical condition, and an attitude of determined optimism prevailed as they approached what was to be a key game, their season opener with Madison. Under the lights in Harrisonburg the Generals suf- fered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Madison Dukes. Down by 17 at half, the defense held Madison scoreless for the remainder of the game. The offense fought hard only to fall a touchdown shy of a big victory. The score was 21-16. The loss of running back Raynard Scott to a knee injury hurt the Generals the following week as they returned home to take on the Centre College Colo- nels. Again having to battle back from a deficit, the offense finally put together a lasting offensive drive. Quarterback Berry brought the team to a tying score with minutes left. A last second field goal attempt was just wide, and the score remained 9-9. The next week the Generals traveled to tangle with the Yellowjackets of Randolph-Macon. Unable to take advantage of their opponent ' s mistakes, the Generals lost, 26-14. The team returned home on October eleventh to face the Fighting Lynx of Southwestern University, in front of the Homecoming crowd. Down by 13 at half, the team showed encouraging effort by opening up their attack in the third quarter. The final quarter, however, proved to be Southwestern ' s, as they went on to win 27-14. The Generals ' efforts continued to fall short. In the next two games their opponents capitalized on their errors; the 29-13 thumping by Hampden-Sydney and the heartbreaking 13-3 loss to arch rival Sewanee brought their record to 0-4-1. At this point in the season the team entered the most difficult half of a tough schedule. The strong Bucknell Bisons and the Denison Big Red took advantage of the Generals on consecutive weekends, 54-0 and 35-0. Numerous injuries and a loss of spirit made a comeback effort even more difficult. After losing to Coast Guard in New London, 3-26, the Generals re- turned to Wilson field to stage a stunning upset over Georgetown (28-26) in the first annual ' Gobbler Bowl. FOOTBALL: Sal Abbruzzse. Lack of experience was the major problem for the soccer team this year. A majority of the team were freshmen and sophomores; as a result, it was a rebuilding year. The schedule was tough, however, with op- ponents like Virginia, Navy, and Madison. The Generals ' final record, 3-10, did not in- dicate the calibre of the team, as several of their losses were by one or two-goal margins. Although the offense twice made as many as five goals, the scoring was, for the most part, sporadic. With much of the pressure being placed on the defense, it was overworked and often un- able to hold off effectively the opposing team. Championship Meet this year. An enthusiastic atti- tude was sparked by a strong top five and by the idea that the harriers would be running on their own territory. Their hopes were dashed on November 8. A week before the state meet, W L was crushed by power- ful Eastern Mennonite and Madison College on a swift, flat course. Revenge was to be had when these teams ran on the hilly W L course in the V.C.A.A. State Meet. In the meet, how- ever, W L placed a distant fourth. Number one for W L was Tern Washington, who captured eighth place. Jim Frantz, Paul Thomson, Al Weeks, and Mike Burns rounded out the top five with 12th, 17th, 18th and 35th, respectively. W L ' s team was in good position the first two miles, but from there it was downhill. Washington and Frantz began to lose contact with the front runners and got caught up in the mud with the rest of the pack. Nonetheless, the team posted a rather impressive seasonal record of 8-5. The top five ran with a close time spread averaging between one and two minutes. The highlight of the season came when the top five went to Waltham, Massachusetts for the Division III, N.C.A.A. Cross- Country Championships. Not faced with any pressure to improve their records, the harriers ran well in a field of over five hundred runners. Maynard Ferguson with the W L Jazz Ensemble — January 20, 1976 The National Lampoon Show ' i ' -= ' - % The Visit Directed by Rob Mish, III Setting by Walter Romanctiuk, Jr. Lighting by Sam Steves, Scott Silverlight The Visit is a story that takes place in a little town in Central Europe, written by one who by no means sets himself apart from these people and who is not so sure that he himself would act differently ... I describe men, not marionettes, tell a story, not an allegory; I set up a world, not the moral ... I don ' t even try to confront my play with the world, because all this kind of thing happens naturally, by itself, as long as the audience is still a part of theatre. Tragedy presupposes guilt, despair, moderation, lucidity, vision, a sense of responsibility . . . Comedy alone is suitable to us. But the trag- ic is still possible even if pure tragedy is not. We can achieve the tragic out of comedy. We can bring it forth as a frightening moment, as an abyss that opens suddenly. Claire Zachanassian represents neither justice nor the Marshall plan, not even the Apocalypse; let her be just what she is: the richest woman in the world, able, because of her fortune, to behave like a heroine in Greek tragedy, absolute, cruel — perhaps like Medea. The big disappointment of the season was that the Generals were not invited to this year ' s NCAA Division III Finals. Certainly the team deserved to go. As far as victories went, the team came within one win of tying the school record of 20 held by two previous W L teams. Accordingly, this year ' s team will be remembered as one of W L ' s finest. The Generals went undefeated the entire month of January and went on to win 13 games in a row before losing to Old Dominion College — a Division II team. This was the tenth straight year Verne Canfield has coached his team to a winning season. Senior John Podgajny had much to do with the Generals ' success, averaging 17.7 points per game. Pod- gajny ended his W L career just 16 points short of 1,000 career points. Leading the Generals ' defense were Jeff Baum and Bob Flint in rebounding while freshman Mike Wenke added an occasional steal. Wenke, Dave Leunig and Ardith Collins on offense gave the team unexpected strength. Juniors Chris Larson, Kim Sims, Don Berlin, and sophomores Bob Forlenza and Pat Dennis provided depth off the bench for W L. Senior Norm Kristoff, who averaged 11 points per game last year, missed a lot of action because of a shoulder injury. Next year ' s Generals should have a good shot at capturing another VCAA crown because the team will lose only three graduating seniors. This goal was accomplished against formidable opponents: Duke, VMI, | VPI, Davidson, Swarthmore, Temple, and Delaware. The final record of 8-7 was due largely to the coaching of Head Coach Gary Franke and his assistant Jon | Spear. i The biggest dual meet win was a 22-15 verdict over Swarthmore (which lost | only one other match all season). The team also performed well in the Citadel I Tournament, with six finalists out of nine entries. The VCAA tournament, too, | was successful: four wrestlers reached the finals and Jim Crytzer won his sec- I ond consecutive title. • A great part of the team ' s success was due to the outstanding performances ? of six freshman wrestlers who won varsity letters. Kevin McFadden won 17 ■• matches and was voted the Outstanding Freshman Wrestler. Dan Kniffen won ' 15 matches and both Tom Morville and Graham Hudgins were victorious eight , times. Washington and Lee ' s lacrosse team would have had to go far to improve last year ' s record. This feeling is common to the team: it has been in the national semifinals for the three previous years, losing each time to the eventual national champion. But the record of the past three years has provided more than just exciting games and thrills. Coach Emmer said the members of the team seemed to have gained more con- fidence in each other. We ' ve experienced a lot of success over the past three seasons. We believe we can play against anyone and be successful. This fact was evidenced by the upgrading of this year ' s schedule. The Generals met some of the toughest competition in the na- tion. The schedule Included lacrosse powers Navy, Maryland and Hofstra. The team also played one of the best club teams in the na- tion, Mt. Washington. The Generals were strong in three of the four aspects of the game. The defense and goal were extremely tight. All-American defenseman Rob Lindsey, a tri-captain, re- turned with Third Team All-American Tommy Keigler. .Charlie Brown, one of the finest goalies in the nation, was once again in the nets. On the attack, tri-captains Rob Morgan and Donny Carroll returned for their senior years. The only question was the midfield, but with experience and maturation came im- provement in this area. The defense carried the team through most of the early games. Brown was excellent in goal and Keigler, Lindsey and John Strock showed that they deserved recognition. W L has been known as a late starting team. In 1975, the young midfield matured and the Generals won four straight games in two weeks, ending the season with a number five ranking in the nation. The final win came against Johns Hopkins in the first round of the tournament, 11-7. The Generals ended the 1975 season losing to Maryland, the even- tual national champion. This season, the early games proved to be the easiest. W L romped to lopsided vic- tories over N.C. State, Duke and Morgan State. But the Generals were not ready for the challenges offered by North Carolina and Navy. Both games were close, defensive struggles and though the Navy game was decided by a last-second goal, the Generals were defeated in both games. Against Virginia Tech, the W L offense exploded for 23 goals. Fans began to think the team was getting hot: the midfield was ready to play. The team won three of its next five games. One of the losses was to top-ranked Maryland by a close margin. The time had come for the spring surge. The final three regular season games were crucial for W L ' s hopes of gaining an NCAA tournament berth and a chance at winning the national cham- pionship. -TH d9--.. «? ■% «4 .Km ti ' ' V f ioto by Chris Volk 161 Craig Owens, co-chairman of the New York delegation, stepp ed to the microphone. New York casts all of her votes to the next president of the United States — Jimmy Carter! Balloons tell, cameras clicked and dele- gates went wild. With New York ' s votes. Carter won the presidential nominatior) of the 1976 W L Mock Democratic National Convention on the second ballot. The Mock Convention weekend began on Friday, May 7, with the tradi- tional parade. A procession of floats, one representing each state, wound through Lexington ' s streets. Crowds of students and Lexingtonians lined the streets, cheering as each colorful float passed by. Following the parade, 1,300 delegates assembled in the Doremus gymna- sium for introductory speeches and reports. The second session began at 8:00 that evening with the keynote address by Sen. William Proxmire (D.- Wis.), who discussed the issues of the 1976 presidential election. He at- tacked the Ford Administration, Reagan and Nixon, and urged W L students to become involved in government. Proxmire was followed by Rep. Donald Riegle (D.-Mich.). Riegle ' s outspoken address attacked the existence of tax loopholes that favor the wealthy and stressed the need for congressional reform in areas of lobby- ing, procedures and seniority. He emphasized the need for credibility in government and pointed out problems in the current welfare system. Jobs, Riegle said, should be the ultimate end of a successful welfare program. After the speeches the convention was turned over to the student dele- gates. A credentials battle underscored the stop Carter sentiment that became evident throughout the weekend. The credentials battle decided which of the two Puerto Rican delegations would be seated and became a 162 real test of Carter ' s strength. Carter won this battle only after the Illinois delegation belatedly cast its vote in favor of the minority plank. The remainder of the evening was given over to a conservative butchering of Stuart Coco ' s Democratic Platform. During this time, a big state caucus led by Everett Martin of the Illinois delegation discussed the next day ' s presidential balloting. The caucus decided that if Carter could obtain 1,200 votes on the first ballot, party unity would prevail and no serious stop Carter movement would be attempted. The next morning, after a warm-up speech by Sen. Dale Bumpers (D.- Ark.), the candidates were nominated and voted upon. On the first ballot Carter fell 134 votes short of the 1,504.5 votes needed to win the nomina- tion, but he did take over the 1,200 required to sidetrack presidential hope- fuls Hubert Humphrey, George Wallace, Jerry Brown and Morris Udall. On the second ballot Democratic party unity prevailed. In the name of Southern solidarity the 215 Wallace votes shifted to Carter. Eventually the entire convention jumped on the Carter bandwagon and the former Georgia governor received the nomination by a landslide. In a telephone message broadcast to the assembled delegates and ob- servers. Carter expressed thanks for the convention ' s confidence in him. He said, however, that he hoped to be nominated on the first ballot at the New York convention. The vice-presidential nomination was given by acclamation to Sen, Walter Mondale (D.-Minn.) after a confusing series of agreements. With Mondale ' s nomination, the 16th Mock Convention drew to a close, leaving the participants to await the results of the upcoming national convention and election. 4 photo by W. Patrick Hinely Rep. Donald Riegle of Michigan MSmM 1 ■ 168 Washington and Lee will receive approximately $11 million from the estate of the late John Lee Pratt, a prominent business executive and philanthropist, who died December 20 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, at the age of 96. Washington and Lee was in the most favored cate- gory in Mr. Pratt ' s will. Two educational institutions in Virginia, the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute State University, will receive bequests of the same size as Washington and Lee ' s and seven other educational institutions will receive bequests in smaller amounts. Washington and Lee ' s bequest is designated to strengthen salaries and expand the University ' s scholarship program. The large bequests to other in- stitutions are subject to additional provisions that if any of the other bequests fails, then it would come to this university. During his lifetime, Mr. Pratt was a generous anon- ymous benefactor of a number of educational and charitable organizations: A profile of Mr. Pratt published in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star on the day of his funeral described him as a philan- thropist who quietly and without fanfare gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations and causes he felt worthwhile. Mr. Pratt was a student for one year at Randolph- Macon College in Ashland, then transferred to the University of Virginia, where he received his degree in civil engineering in 1905. After graduation he joined E.I. duPont de Nemours Company of Wilmington, Delaware, and eventually rose in that company and in General Motors, with which duPont merged in 1917. He was elected GM vice president in 1922, became a director of the company a year later, was a member of the executive committee for 11 years, and served in other executive capacities with the GM board until 1952. In a comment on Mr. Pratt and on the significance of his gift to Washington and Lee, President Robert E.R. Huntley said: Colleges sometimes overuse such words as ' great ' and ' magnificent ' — but I think it is objec- tively fair by any measure to say that those words perhaps understate the impact of John Lee Pratt ' s bequest to Washington and Lee University. In the same way, President Huntley said, I do not think we can overestimate what it has meant to us to have had his friendship, personally and institu- tionally — nor what it has meant ot us to have received his enthusiastic endorsement of our charac- ter, our strengths, and our aspirations. Mr. Pratt was a businessman of lengendary acumen: he created his estate by means of his own talents and his own abilities and his own uncanny powers of judgment. And drawing on those for- midable resources, Mr. Pratt judged Washington and Lee University — and found us worthy. Omicron Delta Kappa Phi Eta Sigma John G. Berry Alan Chipperfield Francis C. For us. it is a valuable reference book that helps create the interlock of our University ' s history and its heritage. No alumnus I know looks back at student days here as a time characterized by lack of importance or little interest. I believe that the Class of 1976 will find more reason than many others to argue that you were here at Washington and Lee over years of unusual impact on this institution. You have witnessed dramatic changes in the physical development of the campus, and you have participated in and benefited from sub- stantive growth in the University ' s academic purpose. To those of us who view Washington and Lee in longer perspective, your class has been a source of assurance and encouragement. We have seen in you a heartening renewal of attitudes and concerns for what so many alumni identify as the traditional values of the Washington and Lee experience. Some yearbooks are more successful than others in capturing the essence of this experience. I am con- fident that your editors have labored diligently to achieve this objective. I hope that this volume will be a warm and welcome companion on many occasions throughout your lives when you find within its pages the happy reminder . . . Yes, that ' s the way it was, and wasn ' t it wonderful! In it are carried the Nikon cameras which were used tor all the pics except Chuck Flowers on 218 and Bill Thomson on this page which were shot with a Rollei 35 S. Collages, layout, and design by WPH. As for the pics on this page: above is a yet un-numbered chapter from The Book of Palms, a yet unpublished book. It and the cat foto are presented as relief from the overpopulated preceding 57 pages. The cat is Chloe. The Colours of Chloe range from a 9% gray under the chin to 86% gray in some body and tail stripes. The Colours of Chloe is also ECM record album ST 1042, which along with other equally good contemporary soundz provided the ongoing inspiration needed for a mammoth project like this. Under Chloe is Bill Thomson, caught in the act, and under him is Jeff Lee, trying to evade the camera Both are to be thanked for long hours with strange pieces of orange plastic wired to their ears. Otherwise this would all have been impossible. Bottom pic is myself-portrait. WPH. ff OE OL SS Class of 1977 Salvatore John Abbruzzese Howard Cobb Alexander. The 1976 Calyx, far from being a monument to the Bicentennial, represents the 1975-76 academic year as a record reference memory book. A scrapbook. A photographic statement of Washington and Lee, for Washington and Lee. In the future you may find yourself wondering about what happened at W L during ' 75-76. Most of it is here. In the future you will probably miss friends you have made at W L — both students and professors. Most of them are here. And you may smile at memories of staying up all night for an exam, wandering into the co-op at 7 a.m. for a cup of coffee, getting an A, getting an F, lacrosse games, grain parties, studying . . . a smile or a grimace, both ephemeral, unlike photographs, paragraphs and names. j ijm iK 11 Lexington.
