The goal of College is to graduate. This is accomplished by ac- cumulating 40 academic points and 40 social points. Accumulation of academic points occurs by passing Examinations, rolling over Midterms, and chance. Accumulation of social points occurs by drinking, fighting, barking, snorting, and other activities determined socially acceptable by one ' s peers. Movement in College occurs by luck, roll of the die, and following the instructions. Each year begins with Matriculation, proceeds through limited space, and ends by passing Examinations. When passing Exami- nations, one moves around unlimited space to complete a turn. When in unlimited space, one on his next turn returns to the Matriculation square of one ' s social and academic status. If these instructions have not clarified how one plays College proceed to Freshman Camp (on the fourth page of the game) for further in- complete instructions, otherwise choose a Token and begin the episodes College. Bibliography 1 Ibid. 2. Washington Hall 3. The page following this page by 3 pages Episodes of College R-ON OOT OV- G-l ON vJ --( TD TRocv; STOP goshenj OPxF CUf SS C Freshman Camp This page is dedicated to those who are confused with the College ex- perience. The following set of instructions should aid this great majority in the playing of College. The first thing any Freshman should know is how to move around. Movement occurs by the roll of the die, and everyone begins at the Ma- triculation squares. If you have 20 points or less you are restricted to year 1 (i.e. f ) ; 40 points or less year 2 (i.e. ); 60 points or less year 3 (i.e. ); and 80 points or less year 4 (i.e. LJ ). Move- ment is restricted to limited space (i.e. those squares within the circle and not on the circle) unless sent to unlimited space (i.e. those squares on the circle) by instructions on a card, instructions on a square, or to finish a turn. When passing an Examination square players must finish their turn by travelling in either direction in unlimited space. When in unlimited space, unless in the Infirmary, on one ' s next turn one proceeds to the Matriculation space your points qualify you for and then proceeds from there. When one comes to an intersection in limited space just continue in the year you are in unless you have enough points to be in the year you are crossing. Other helpful instructions to the Freshman at College are to take turns with one ' s class mates and to remember that graduation occurs upon ac- cumulation of 40 academic points and 40 social points. Also when you land on a square (which hopefully you will always do) do what the in- structions tell you, and when you land on a Drop-Add, Pass-Fail, Weak, or Weakend square draw the appropriate cards which are included in the back of the book. Two additional reminders — be sure and read the four sets of instruc- tions on the game board, and be sure and pick a token to represent you in your four years of College. Possible Tokens of College according to Major interest. It is to help the black student maintain his identity and to be his liason with the University, the Lexington community, and the various black student unions in Virginia. SABU is dedicated to presenting the different aspects of Black culture to the W L community. SABU also aids and advises the ad- ministration in recruiting, admitting, orienting, educating, and socially guiding the black student. During the year SABU, under the leadership of its president Eugene Perry formulated the plans and wrote the constitution for the Black Student Alliance of Virginia (BSAVa.). The first conference of BSAVa. was held at Washington and Lee on November 16. 1974. SABU also worked with the NAACP, the Boys Club, and a number of churches in the community. The highlight of the year was Black .Awareness Week when a number of prominent black speakers and a nationally known choir were brought to the campus. Black Awareness Week Black Awareness Week is held annually to project the ideas and feelings of blacks toward America and to give examples of the contribu- tions that blacks have made and are continuing to mai;e to society. Black Awareness Week also gives students at W L an opportunity to exchange ideas with prominent blacks who have had some of the same experiences. To show the different aspects of the black man and his culture. SABU prepared a comprehensive week of events. Dr. David Shannon — Pittsburg Theological Seminary, spoke on Black Religious Experience ; Sam Proctor — Dean of Graduate Education Rutgers University, discussed Black Educational Expe- rience; and The Reverend Wyatt T. Walker, Cai.aan Baptist Church, evaluated Contribu- tions of the Black Man to American Society; Also present for the event was Dr. Charles Henry, Asst. Commissioner of the Big Ten, and the Virginia Union University Choir. The week was topped off hy a formal dance — The Black Ball. Ty York Charlie Gholson Rick Gumpert Rick Heldrich Mr. Webster ' s definition of fraternity is sprinkled with words like formal, common, and same, but there is nothing about Delts that fit any of these. We party, get drunk, get wild even; and we book, we cram, sometimes even prepare for a course, and we jock it up. We do not pretend to like everything we do, yet we invariably do like most of what we do. Through all of this, the one thing that remains certain is that we are individuals brought together under the social banner of fraternity, that we try not to indulge in the absurdities of social facades, that we do offend each other and certainly commend each other, that we are Delts, and that we do care for each other. 152 Delta Tau Delta 1. Letter from the President ll is natural that at this time your thoughts arc of the future and of the life that lies ahead of you. This book may be for you — as my Calyx has been for me — more treasured in years to come than it is now. Then it may be that you will tmd through it a way not merely of remembering the past with nostalgia but also a way of renewing the enthusiasms and ide- alism of your college years. During freshman orientation it has been my habit to emphasize to incoming students how swiftly the time at Washington and Lee will go by. ' ou are now in a position to appreciate the truth of that thought. To me it only seems yesterday that you were in that freshman group. Those of us who live and work at your alma Mater send with you the hope that during our fleeting time together you have discovered something of the satisfaction which comes from the sharpened intellect and the disciplined mind. Our hope is also that you may take from here a heightened awareness of the timeless and noble ideals of integrity, tolerance and selfless concern of others. You have shared with us. as have generations before, a generous portion of that youthful est for life which tends to make optimists of us all. Thanks. Administration Staff Robert E.R.
