• WASHlNGTOil There are about 2,100 of us in the immediate W L Commu- nity. The W L Community, though, exists only in a geograph- ical sense. We are were all here for a finite space time. For each one of us, W L is a different place. You shouldn ' t feel offended if every page of this book doesn ' t look like i oiir W L. If on another extreme, you can ' t personally relate to (iiu part of the book, who are you? The 1973 CALYX is intended to serve as a soundtrack for your eyes; it was conceived as an artistic documentar) ' on the school year 1972-73, plus the 1972 Mock Convention. Inclusion of the Convention disrupts conventional chronological continu- ity, but then, the linear concept of time never made much sense anyway — just ulcers. The basic idea of this volume is the assembly of photos and words in a visually appealing manner. Words are held to a minimum, for photographs communicate more and faster. The conventional function of a yearbook is one of historical record. I have attempted to fuse history with art; I hope to tell you what you want to know and to make it fun, too. Conventional reference data, such as addresses of students, et cetera, are not included. The student directory has it all; there is where it belongs, here it would only serve to clutter things up. As to interpretations and implications of what is included herein, they are, in Shakespierre ' s words, As You Like It. Vi- sual art speaks for itself and does so in the language of the viewer. The one stress I moved away from is the concept of an event- oriented book. Sure, events of the year are in fact included, but so are the everyday things. Just plain old boring things, regular unoutstanding people doing them. If you think back on it, you ' ll have to admit that such things take up a lot of time around W L. The rigid academic structure which prevents W L from keeping up with the change of decades (though some would say centuries) condemned us to spend much of our time doing things which hindered our learning more than helping it. Spe- cific data inputs were required at phenomenally fast — and sometimes absurd — rates. And we pay someone else money for this? Such is the nature of a university, (monoversity?) The only thought I wish to provoke is upon the question of what we ' re doing here, or in some cases, if we ' re doing any- thing here. You are free, by choice of your way of life, to decide which group you fall into. There are those among us who limit themselves in their viewpoint on W L, and would even go so far as to limit the viewpoints of others.
