WASHINGTON LEE UNIVERSITY Miles from nowhere, Radical calm, southern prep. 1400 undergraduate, 232 law school, even north-south distribu- tion, large number of in state students, 1.5% blacks, 27 coeds by exchange; selective, 1200 S.A.T. average. English and Politics superior departments. Law school taking turn upward. Most popular professors; Huntley (English), Jenks (History), Leyburn (Sociology), Pemberton (Philosophy). Tenure has left its mark. Courses tight and traditional. Memorization and plenty of tests. No particular required courses, easy distribution. Six weeks spring term offers best opportunity for independent work, few take the chance. No junior year abroad program. Some pass fail. Few stu- dent originated courses. Some exchange with area womens ' colleges. Tuition IS $2,200 and rising. Fair amount of loans, scholarships, and campus jobs. All freshmen live in dorms; most sophomores in frat houses; everyone else on their own. Off-campus varies from Walden pond to Harlem. Handsome campus succumbing to the asphalt-pothole-red clay syndrome. New buildings phony-coloney. Friendly, nice guys , stylishly long hair, blue jeans with tweed stuffed in closet. Students relaxed; few freaks. Generally well off Southerners and Northern sympathizers. Grinding and brown nos- ing popular pastimes. Dating involved process. Dates center on apartment parties and the smaller but still strong 15 fraternities. There is absolutely nothing to do in Lexington. Big drinking school, drugs becoming popular. Good inexpensive dope. Very little politi- cal activity since May, 1970, which brought W L into the 20th cen- tury, fightingto stay there. Grind during the week, party on weekend. Little interest in crea- tive arts as result of school policy. Contact week provides seven days of speakers which is about the extent of intellectual programs. Concert Guild brings music to Lee Chapel; the Dance Board brings losers to Doremus Gym. Student Government strives for law school recommendations, the Ring — Tum Phi for mediocrity. Political organizations vary from University Republicans (right of center) to John Birch Society. University Federation provides only means of community involvement in a town the university ignores. WLUR-FM steadily improving. Library desperate, gymnasium elaborate. People rap about Sports Illustrated, Playboy, television, and the big weekend. Escape to Washington, ski resorts, the Virginia coun- tryside, and the saunas. Wrestling: 17-21. Lebanon Valley; 12-36. Duke. 42-3. Washington College; 24-15. Eastern Mennonite; 6-40. Brown, Charley Pride, Wade Peery, DougMadison, Withers Davis, Rick Middleton, Tom Bear. Leslie D. Smith was the first black graduate of the law school. Twenty-six years old and an attorney in the civil rights division of the Justice Department, he was found mysteriously stabbed to death in his Washington. D.C. apartment last summer. No one knows why. A Brother of Mine Death is the ultimate fate of all mortals, but many live in afterdeath, through their dreams and goals, that they sought to establish in life, and in the hearts of those who hail them dear. This is not an attempt to immortalize Leslie, so his name can long be remembered. Surely he was a brother, who can not be replaced in the hearts of my family, because we loved him dearly. There is no need to put em- phasis on his past achievements, but there is a need to look at his attitudes toward life, especially here in Ameri- ca. His beliefs will yield greater value to us, through the recognition of his achievements. Leslie believed in America, not as it exists today, with its racial injustice, but as a place where every man could obtain his fullest freedom and be truly liberated. He saw hope for a country torn by racial strife; where freedom is genocide, and war is honor. He wanted peace and harmony to prevail, so that every man could be called a friend, whether he be Black or White. He did not let the racial discrimination that he experienced in the peanut fields of Mr. Charley as a child influence him with hatred. Nor did he complain about the fact that he was bused over fifteen miles away from home to an all Black high school, while he only lived fifteen yards from another school, but that school was all White. No one screamed about busing Leslie, and other Black children at that time, because it was for segregation. The system provides unequal education for Blacks. Today let me mention busing and the outcries against it could almost shatter eardrums. Why, because it means providing an equal and top quality education for Blacks. An education that Leslie was denied, but fortunately he over came his systematically imposed handi- cap! Leslie believed that true freedom for Blacks could not exist until they were provided with the highest quali- ty of education possible. He believed that this could not come about until the laws of the land be enforced to the fullest extent. The laws that are based on the belief that all men are created equal. Leslie believed that this country had the potential to become the greatest nation ever, if only the racial preju- dices that are now institutionalized could be overcome. He worked within the system, the very same system that discriminated against him. He saw hope that the system could be reformed. Many of us Blacks see differently. Leslie ' s death was not only a loss to my family, or the Black ' s, but a loss to the country as a whole. His thoughts, beliefs, and dreams were shared by many other young extinguished Black men who were struck down before they could reach the glory of their life. Let me say again that there are many other Blacks who believe differently. Let us pray for America ' s sake, that his thoughts, his belief and his dreams did not die with him.
