To the Students of Washington and Lee: Some of you may recall my remark to you on a pleasant April morning that I did not know any other group of young men who are heirs of a legacy of such distinction. In your behalf Washington made his greatest donation, embodying his dream for the future of the country he had helped to forge. In your behalf Lee labored for memorable years. Into your hands he committed his prophecy and his hope. To these illustrious names are joined many others of great distinction who toiled elsewhere to establish on this campus a concrete evidence of their faith in young life. It is not merely sentiment which assumes that upon you rests a peculiar obligation. Beyond the felicities of personal culture and beyond the profits of personal competence, education at ' ashington and Lee implies an acknowledgment of a high trust- P President.
