His chief reliance for achievement will be in certain intangibles : attitude toward learning, grace or social relationship, integrit}- of effort, capacity for honor and for faith. Bill Stone, one of the moguls of Mortgage Row, may be remem- bered as constantly gracing the cam- pus with his lumbering presence. From the vantage point of the Phi Kap house, the campus is but a park, full of towering trees, and those winding pathways which enter the portals of the college. Quite unique to be remembered is the marvel of the D. U. house — the Haines twins. A sure sign of Spring. . . and finals. But one must keep his mind on the books. Four dignified seniors, or maybe four seniors. Can you name them ? Saturday afternoon the roads, east and west, may be seen, full of care-worn students, looking for the sweets of the out-of-doors — or may- be Lynchburg. ArTEC THE C ILE A rare old snap shot in front of the K. A. house at 7 A. M. This picture has been puhhshed after numerous threats. A rapidly declining luxury, on the campus. Once an automobile was the mark of success in the whirl of college life, now a rarity. The president of Finals once had a habit of stealing someone else ' s oirl. Notice his guilty expression as he linds himself caught with all evi- dence against him. Two students of the Class of 1932, after final ball, with their lady friends. What the well dressed lady and gentleman wore back in 1932. The music had ceased but this melody will linger on. As one might have seen the S. A. E. fire or maybe this is the boon- fire to send otY the team to Virginia. W€Cr AND PLAT WITH THErACLLXr Dr. Livingston Smith will al- ways be remembered as the enig- ma to every freshman, for his unique expressions in class. Mr. Mattingly stands in our memories as the Czar of records and grade cards. Professor Phillips, the scholar- ly teacher of commerce, main- tained this pose especially for the Calyx so that his students may never forget. Even the steps of the gymnasium are becoming worn with the con- stant tap-tap of feet. Soon this popular building will maintain an archaic look that characterizes the university. Dr. Campbell, whose reign will be marked by historians, from the death of General Lee until the middle of the twentieth century, also posed for the Calyx. Members of the faculty are in- vited to attend the Freshman Camp, so that they may prove to the students that they are human. Henry W. Anderson, alumnus and Republican leader in Vir- ginia, was escorted to assembly to speak to the students. Billy Hinton, contemporary of Dr. Flick, posed just outside the Psychology labratory. Dean Moreland still maintains that the Law School is not a part of the university but IS the uni- versity. One of the parodies of the Sunny South is the heavy snow that often occasions the section. This picture was taken in about two feet of snow. ri lENDS Cr THE UNIVECSITT Mrs. Otis Mead, house mother to the Pi K. A. ' s, may be remem- bered by her genial smile and constant kindness to the students. Mrs. Lee, of Phi Kappa Sigma, always looking upon the students with sympathy, regardless of their week-ending. Mrs. Mosby lends a ray of home to the A. T. O. ' s and has con- verted the mansion from a dcir- mitory into a real home. Cy Young, coach, alumni sec- retary, ardent supporter of the university, always lends a helping hand to every activity. Mrs. Barely is popular among the house-mothers as well as the students, and ranks among earli- est of them all. She has been with the Phi Kappa Psi ' s longer than any of the present ones. Once called the false face house, the Delta Tau Delta man- sion has taken on a quaint colonial atmosphere of the decade of pros- perity. More snow to make the Yan- kee boys wonder why they came South, and the Dixie boys to look with amazement. The officer of the Day at Y. M. I. in charge of the neighboring cadets was caught on his post, to be snapped for the Calyx. ' i V ATHLETES The disastrous game with George Washington University. They still gloat over catching the Generals on an off year. Charlie Smith, sophomore foot- ball and basketball man. Jabbo, fruit vendor, trainer and most popular face on Mortgage Row. M. Peel Rivers, or the reason why the Swimming team has such a good reputation. Mattox tags out the champion base stealer of New York Uni- versity. The winner of the Finals Crew race, the Harry Lee Crew. Freshman wrestlers are taught by Coach Mathis to be winners. The start of the State Cross- country meet. Young, Backfield Coach From a viewpoint of scoring the 1932 team was a dismal failure, but each game was evenly contested regardless of the record. George Washington, w ' on the opener with a suprisingly powerful attack. The next Saturday the Generals playing Davidson on even terms gave in by the score of 7 to o. Navy then loomed up from an unsuccessfvd start to catch the Generals on an off day and administer a 33 to o defeat. Then Kentucky catching the Generals in a defeated mood fought their way to the long side of the score. In Norfolk, William and Mary was decisively outplayed, but the generals were outpointed again in scoring by 7 points. V. P. I. then with its superior team showed its ranking as a leader in the Southern Conference by adminis- tering a 32 to 6 defeat. But finally the Generals tasted victory for the first time, in defeating Virginia at their own homecoming. West Virginia, the jinks of the Generals and Maryland then played their parts to gain victories, until Duke finished the season on Thanksgiving by winning 13 to o. May this season only serve as a battle cry for future teams. f f% S3 rf 13 ■34 j a4 . .Mattox, Henthorne, Glvnn, Smith, D lk, Cakaian, Thomas.
