CALYX The College THE College is naturally the oldest division of ' ashing;ton and Lee University. Its roots reach back to the early beginnings of the institution in the ighteenth century. Its organization has been broadened and extended at various times and now em- braces numerous departments and instructors and more than half of the student body. The College provides courses in the arts and sciences designed to afford a broad cultural education, together with special training in the field of the student ' s choice. The group system. with reasonable scope for election, is regarded as the most satisfactor - and effective means for the accomplishment of these ends. Under this system the subjects taught in the College are divided into four groups embracing foreign languages, English and ])hilosophv, the social sciences and the natural sciences. The student is re- quired to complete a limited number of courses in each of these groups, but is allowed freedom of choice with respect to the rest of the courses necessary for the attainment of his degree. The degrees offered are Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. Among the special features provided in the College are a well equipped Dejiartment of Journal- ism and a carefullv organized Pre-] Iedical Course. V Toj rozv. left to riijht: Mortox.
