CALYX 1932 THE final measure of greatness in the life of a University is not the magnitude of physical plant, not the impressiveness of statistics, but the power of life sent out from the campus. Within the first period of this institution ' s history it attracted George Wash- ington, who gave handsomely to its endowment. Within the second period it won from Lee a dedication of his immense service ; within the later years it has earned the friendship of hosts of judicious Americans. North and South. At no time did the plea for the University rest ui)on massive buildings or gigantic endowment. Eloquence is here in the beauty of environment, in abiding historical sentiment, in persuasive friendliness. But the compelling argument for the University is ultimately sounded by the character and the performance of the men who. shaped I)v its influences, go forth into the world. Washington and Lee greets with confidence this oungest group of her sons. these men for whom The Calyx of 1932 is a record of academic career. They belong to a great fraternity of distinguished personality They will maintain its standards, will fulfill their promise of life, so radiant before the eyes of us who have watched them.
