LONG, Jr. Business Manager MAY231932 THE CALYX 1932 Published Annually by the Students of Washington and Lee University Volume XXXVIH FOREWORD WASHINGTON AND LEE lives on because of its alumni. From his college career, each has gone out to make a place for himself in the world, strengthened by the lessons learned here. Some, on account of their loyalty and service to the Uni- versity, have been selected to represent the others in this book. By this it is not meant to slight the rest, but rather to recognize them all by these few. To all the Alumni, this 1932 Calyx is dedicated. HARRY KILLINGER YOUNG WHOSE service and loyalty to the University, both in college and in after life, is now being climaxed by his service to Washington and Lee as Alumni Secretary. With one who knows more alumni than any other person connected with the University, it is thought that this dedication might be well begun. NEWTON DIEHL BAKER I AWYER, Mayor, Secretary of War, Hague Court L— Jurist ... all have made him internationally famous . . . but for his invaluable service as a Trustee and devoted alumnus, he has been given a place among our most well-known sons. JOHN WILLIAM DAVIS HIS service to his country as Congressman, Solicitor General, and Ambassador and his successful career as a lawyer has failed to diminish his loyalty to his University ... as proven by his work on the Board of Trustees of Washington and Lee. His name we include among our celebrated graduates. His career as a lawyer has been no less successful and his interest in the University again looms forth in his activities on the Alumni Com- mission of Dr. Gaines. CALYX 1932 THE final measure of greatness in the life of a University is not the magnitude of physical plant, not the impressiveness of statistics, but the power of life sent out from the campus. Within the first period of this institution ' s history it attracted George Wash- ington, who gave handsomely to its endowment. Within the second period it won from Lee a dedication of his immense service ; within the later years it has earned the friendship of hosts of judicious Americans. North and South. At no time did the plea for the University rest ui)on massive buildings or gigantic endowment. Eloquence is here in the beauty of environment, in abiding historical sentiment, in persuasive friendliness. But the compelling argument for the University is ultimately sounded by the character and the performance of the men who. shaped I)v its influences, go forth into the world. Washington and Lee greets with confidence this oungest group of her sons. these men for whom The Calyx of 1932 is a record of academic career. They belong to a great fraternity of distinguished personality They will maintain its standards, will fulfill their promise of life, so radiant before the eyes of us who have watched them. It endeavors to give them training that is both sound and thorough on the theoretical side, but which gives due attention to the practical side as well. ' ith such training we believe our graduates are pre- pared to enter the legal profession well equipped for all of its activities ; able to understand and judge criti- cally the underlying theories of the law, to pass judg- ment upon their fitness and application to the social and economic conditions of our time, to preside with credit and efficiency in any office of a judicial character, and to do with intelligence and discrimination the work of the advocate. Wilson. The purposes of the school were expressed in 1869 b - General Robert E. Lee. when he recommended the establishment of a school of commerce : Such a school ma}-, with great advantage, be added to the schools of the College, as many students may by its means prepare themselves for business pursuits while obtaining such scientific and literary culture in the (ither schools as time and opportunity may allow. The degree of Bachelor of Science is offered, with specialization groups in business administration, bank- ing and finance, accounting, foreign service, and public administration. There are fifty-five members of the senior commerce class this session. The school is a member of the Association of American Schools of Business. - 07 -c .d: .,rT Glover Duxn Hancock, A.B.. Its roots reach back to the early beginnings of the institution in the ighteenth century. Its organization has been broadened and extended at various times and now em- braces numerous departments and instructors and more than half of the student body. The College provides courses in the arts and sciences designed to afford a broad cultural education, together with special training in the field of the student ' s choice. The group system. with reasonable scope for election, is regarded as the most satisfactor - and effective means for the accomplishment of these ends. Under this system the subjects taught in the College are divided into four groups embracing foreign languages, English and ])hilosophv, the social sciences and the natural sciences. The student is re- quired to complete a limited number of courses in each of these groups, but is allowed freedom of choice with respect to the rest of the courses necessary for the attainment of his degree. The degrees offered are Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. Among the special features provided in the College are a well equipped Dejiartment of Journal- ism and a carefullv organized Pre-] Iedical Course. V Toj rozv. left to riijht: Mortox. XEWCOMB HALL L 103 1 1932 CALYX The Commerce Club THE Coinmerce Clul) was organized last year by a group of senior commerce students. It had for its purpose the discussion of lousiness and commercial topics of current interest. The club met once a month and arranged programs for each meeting. All senior commerce students, the faculty, and the twenty juniors having the highest averages at the end of their sopho- more year, are in ited to join. The meetings were very informal and usually ended with refreshments in the form of cigars, cigarettes and gum. This year the club had a very enjoyable and success- ful year under the leadership of Joe Wright. The pro- grams arranged b - the program committee were all entered into with such a fine spirit that it was decided to ha e no outside speakers, but to let the students make talks along the lines suggested by the committee. The club has for two years been a success, and the benefits derived from it are of such a nature as to warrant its continuino- in the future. r 104 ] CALYX 1932 THE SENIORS SCIENCE Officers William Cleveland Knopf, Jr President Frank Henry Brady I ' icc-Prcsidcnt Charles Jackson Biddle Secretary-Treasurer Frank Richard Bailey Historian 106 ] 19 3 2 CALYX Frank Richard Bailey HUNTINGTON. Burks, Morison, Ade, Ladd, Hornor, SwixK, Wright, Vickers, Martin, Campbell, McClure, Sparks WITH an unprecedented number of visitors, combined with a large number of the student body, the 1932 Finals goes down in history as one of the most successful dance sets. Many novelties in decorations were used, and the orchestra received much favorable comment. The first activities of the set began on the night of June 3, when the Inter- fraternity Ball, led by Jack Ball, was held in the g mnasium. A new scheme of decorations was carried out for this dance in blue and white colors. On the morning of June 4. the Pan-White Friar dansant was held. The annual atifair was led by William Stone, President of the ' hite Friars, and Peel Rivers, President of the Pi Alpha Nus. In the afternoon of the day, the Delta Upsilon fraternity gave a tea dance at their house. Part of the Finals orchestra played for this dance. Following the tea dance, the annual boat races between the Albert Sydney and Harrv Lee crews was the scene of interest on the North River. That night Leigh Williams and Miss Grace Mayo, of Norfolk, led the figure for the Sigma German. The customary Sigma was formed. Decorations for this dance, remained blue and white. The Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Psi fraternities entertained at a joint dance during the afternoon of June 6. The Senior-z lumni Ball was held in the gym- nasium that night. This dance was led b. - a group of prominent alumni and Cy Young, alumni secretary, and the Seniors were led by Joe right. Following a fraternit - dance on June 6. came the Final Ball, which was the high spot in the set ' s activities. A new type of decoration was seen at this dance. The figure of Final Ball, designed by Mrs. Lucius Desha, was led by Eugene Martin, President of Finals, with Miss Margaret Colb, of Baltimore, : Iaryland. Rivers CALYX 1932 Coach James DeHart Football I931-I932 IN the fall of 1931, Jimmy DeHart left his coaching duties at Duke University, and came back to Washington and Lee to assume the position left vacant by former coach Eugene Oberst. Mr. DeHart found that he had a prodigious task to perform as he was to change the method of play from the Rockne system to that of his own. The fact that at the end of the year Washington and Lee emerged with the State Championship is proof enough as to how he overcame this difficulty. The Generals got ofif to a flying start by defeating Hampden-Sydney College 32-0, which put the student body in high spirits and lent moral support to the players. On October 3rd the over-jubilant Generals had quite a startling reverse when Davidson downed them 7-0 on our home field. The fact that the Generals gained four times as much in yardage will always serve to soften the defeat. Following this unhappy event the Generals packed up and took a trip where they met with two startling defeats ; the University of Kentucky and the University of West Virginia. In the Kentucky game the teams were evenly matched, except for one of the Kentucky backs who seemed to run wild throughout the entire game, and when the final whistle blew, the game was theirs with a score of 45-0. The expe- rience at West Virginia proved equally as heart-breaking as the Generals were again defeated. The score this time being 19-0. Home-coming occurred on October 24, and it was a gala day for the Generals. Our ancient rivals, the LTniversity of Virginia, brought a strong team over, and [ 293 ] f ' ' i LADD MANAGER JONES HEAD CHEER LEADER RYLAND JUNIOR. MANAGER HANLEY-E were fully prepared to administer another stinging defeat to the much disheartened Generals. But the day turned out to be a walk away for W. and L. as they marched time after time through the Wahoo aggregation. The final score was 18-0. The last day of October found the Generals in Nor- folk matched against one of the strongest teams that it played the entire season, William and Mary. Although the game ended in a scoreless tie, this was the contest that decided that the title of State Champions should rest upon the shoulders of Washington and Lee. By now the Generals were functioning with machine- like precision, which was well corroborated by the outcome SAWYERS H-B STEVENS C WOFFORD T of the next two games. Virginia Polytechnic Institute was easily defeated by a score of 6-0. It was the first time in several years that W. and L. had put the pants on V. P. I., and the success proved quite gratifying. Next in line came the Princeton Tigers. The Generals upset all the dope and expectations by charging through the Tigers for a victory of 6-0. The entire contest was a wonderful exhibition of football. At College Park the much cherished Generals again proved their salt, but were defeated 13-7 by Maryland. The last game of the season was lost to Duke, 6-0. This game BO WILSON QB MOSOVICH E MATTOX H-B MORRIS T NESBITT- G ended the season, and, although it was a defeat, the season was in itself a success. The Generals team loses many of its hest men this year, such as: Mitchell and Bailey (co-captains), Mattox, Tilson. Martin, Nesbitt, MacDonald, and Stephens. How- ever the prospects for next year are very good with fifteen lettermen back, and a wealth of good Sophomore material available. With such good material the season of 1932 should be nearly perfect. Weighing everything, all in all, it seems that the Gen- erals are on the upgrade. Here ' s wishing them a bright and victorious season. COLLINS F-B Results Sept. 26 — W. L 2 ; Hampden-Sydney Oct. 3— VV. L o : Davidson 7 Oct. 10 — W. L o; Kentucky 45 Oct. 17 — W. Sawyers, Wilson, Steinberg, and Mosovich came up from the ranks of the championship freshman team, and from football, Bailey was drafted to jump center. The season was marked by well-played games at home, and an occasional hard fought victory away from home. It opened with two practice games against the Shawnee Club, and Salem Independ- ents. The former was defeated by the score of 34-8, while the latter, amateur champions of this section, were overwhelmed by the final count of 60-25. After the Christ- mas holidays, St. Johns was the first team met. and they were defeated, 22-15. One of the most thrilling games ever seen on the local floor was witnessed when Maryland, Southern Con- ference champions, was met in the first conference game of the season. At the end of the regulation time the score was tied 36-36. At the end of two overtime periods. Maryland won, 42-38. The next night the tired Generals traveled to Charlottesville and Virginia won, 25-11. V. P. I. was met in the next conference game, and the Gobblers were defeated. 28-18. Then came two defeats in a row away from home, one by Xavier University, 28-23. and by the University of Kentucky. The Generals braced and defeated North Carolina State, 20-15, by means of a strong defense. A few nights later, Duke won in the last thirty seconds, the final count being 30-27. For the second consecutive year the Blue and White defeated West Virginia University, this time bv a score of 31-30. William and Mary, Virginia Conference champions, was the victim of a 31-17 onslaught. V. P. I. was then met at Blacksburg and the Generals held the Gobblers to three field goals, but lost, 22-16, when V. P. I. made 16 points by means of free throws. The team then went on the road, lost to Maryland, defeated Duke 21-12 (thereby being the only team to beat them on their home floor this season), and lost to N. C. State and North Carolina University. The last home game was against the University of Virginia and the Generals showed a real fighting spirit then, after trailing, 13-5, they tied the score at the end of the regulation time, and won m the overtime. 2i-i7- Prospects for next year are very bright, with all the letter men due to return, and an exceptionally strong freshman squad coming up. Smith THE 1 93 1 baseball season was one of the best Washington and Lee has enjoyed for several years. The team won twelve and lost five games, also finished in a tie with V. M. I. for second place in Sonthern Conference Tri-State League. North Carolina University finished first by defeating North Carolina State in the final game of the season. The season was begun in an auspicious manner when Jack Jarrett shut out Georgetown LTniversity 8-0, allowing only three hits. Methvin. a left-hander, did equally as well when he shut out Bridgewater four days later 12-0. Injuries handicapped the team severely in mid-season, and during this time one game was lost to University of North Carolina 8-7, and two games to the LTniversity of Maryland, who was afterwards defeated twice. Only one game was lost within the state, and this was to V. P. I. at Blacksburg. The Generals defeated them later, 8-2, thereby getting first claim to the State title. The two feature games on the schedule were the two Commencement games with the University of Maryland, the Generals winning both at College Park and Lexington, 6-5 and 4-3. The work of the whole infield and the ]iitching of Jarrett were the bright spots in the team ' s play. The team was managed by Wilbur Owen of South Boston, Virginia, and W. C. It was a well-balanced organization and also one which boasted several star performers. In spite of the calibre of the team it lost three dual meets because the opponents also had exceptionally strong teams. The University of North Carolina and William and Alary College defeated us, but only after many thrilling races, and only after the last event had been run. On the other hand, overwhelming victories were scored against Richmond Uni- versity, which failed to win a single event, and Maryland University which was on the small end of a 92 to 34 score. The University of Virginia was defeated 53 to 37 in the opening meet of the season held in Doremus Gymnasium. In the Indoor Southern Conference games, won by North Carolina, we finished second in a field of sixteen. In the state meet which closed the season, we also finished second. No account of the season would l)e complete without mention of the consistent work of Ade. Johnson, and Edmonds in the dashes. Sheppard and Broderick in the middle distances, and Gladden and Mahler in the longer runs. Our high jumpers. Rivers, Cook and Curtis were verv de])endable. and Bailey and Stevens were usually ahead in the weights. Perhaps the outstanding performance of the }-ear was turned in by Finkelstein who equalled the world ' s record in winning the 70- ard low hurdles in the Southern Conference Indoor Games. Speer won the high hurdles in this same meet for the second time in as mam- years, set a state record in the outdoor high hurdles, and made a new school record in his event. Tilson PUNCHING out a total of twenty-six individual victories to their opponents fifteen, the Washington and Lee varsity boxers won four of their six dual matches, to make an average of sixty-six and two-thirds per cent. Both defeats, which were inflicted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and North Carolina University, were closely contested meets. The margin of defeat was one and two victories, respectively. Robertson, midget 115-pound southpaw, who won ever} ' dual meet bout this year, was defeated in the finals at the Southern Conference Tournament for the 115-pound championship. This hard hitting southpaw was the first General mittman to reach the finals or score a point in the Southern Conference Meet since the advent of the sport at Washington and Lee. Collins, who represented the 175-pound class for the Generals was not eliminated from the Conference tournament until the semi-finals, when he lost on a decision. Of the letter men this year. Robertson. Tilson and Srulowitz will be lost by graduation, but we will have the following monogram winners around which to build our 1933 varsity: Tucker. Seraphine. Farmer. Mincher. Pound. Collins, and Martin. All of these with the exception of Pound and Collins have been on the varsity for only one year. Five promising freshmen will be eligible for the varsity squad next year: Cleveland. Robert, Smith, Lough, and Short. Mathis THE Washington and Lee wrestling team went through a very successful season, winning all of its meets and holding undisputed claim to the Southern Conference Championship. This marked the third consecutive undefeated season for the Generals and gave them a record of eighteen consecutive victories. During the 1931-32 season the blue and white matmen won from Johns Hopkins Uni- versity, University of North Carolina, Davidson College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Duke University, and Army. This marked the third year in a row that the Generals have won from Army. The Army meet this year was held in Lexington and attracted the largest crowd that has ever witnessed a wrestling meet at Washington and Lee. Outstanding wrestlers on the 1931-32 championship team were Evans 118 pounder, Smith 145 pounder, Wright 165 pounder, and Mitchell heavyweight. All four of these men won all of their matches and are without a doubt the best wrestlers at these weights in the conference. Osterman, 135 pounder, lost only one match during the season and Abramson won all the matches he took part in. However he withdrew from school in February and did not take part in the Duke and Army meets. Prospects for next year ' s team look far from good, with Mitchell, Osterman, Flagg, Abramson, Nelson, and possibly Wright out of competition. The freshmen wrestlers went through a five meet schedule without a defeat. This record gives Washington and Lee freshmen wrestling teams twenty-one consecutive victories over a period of four years. Victories this year were won over University of North Carolina, Greenbrier Military Academy, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and two victories over Augusta Military Academy. Thomas, Sarkis and Munger were undefeated on the freshmen team. Ruffner and Mendolia in the heavier weights also had good records for the season and with another year ' s experience should develop into first class varsity wrestlers.
