By carrying on the traditions and living up to the aspirations of its founders, Washington has accomplished many things in the year 1940-1941. A new student governing body, Student Senate, was inaugurated in October to replace the defunct Student Council. Members of the Senate were appointed by a faculty committee and its purpose is to act as an advisory board in the formulation of regulations for the control and administration of student activities. Dr. Vfilliarn Henry Stead was appointed Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration at the beginning of the academic year. Dean Stead is also chairman of the Department of Economics, succeeding the late Dean George W. Stephens. - The School of Engineering, in responseto the needs of the day, offers an Engineering Defense Training Course in night school. Prom BOO applicants, 175 rnen were selected to take the twenty-Week course designed to fit engineers for placement in the defense industries of our countryf.

an H:-.,, Xxx, f . Cyclotron under construction A , F TE, Q bf: J ft, L N September, the Student Publications Bureau replaced the Associated Students Advertising Bureau. Under the direction of Paul Lashly, all business managerships have been abolished and Assistant Directors have been put in charge of the various student publications. Facilities of the Bureau have been almost doubled and the staff will be enlarged to include twice as many. solicitors as last year. Construction of the 96-ton cyclotron in the Washington University Engineering School is nearing completion. The atom-smasher, which is the second largest in the country, forms a radio-active substance which will be studied for its medical uses. The University suffered irreparable loss in theldeaths of Dr. George Ware Stephens, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Dean of Students and Dr. Frank M. Debatin, Dean of the University College. We find in the lives of these two men a record of loyalty and service that will be a lasting inspiration to young men and women. ' Important changes in the Athletic Department were the appointment of Frank Loebs as head football coach and Bob Kinnan as basketball and track coach. Two prominent Washington alumni died: David Franklin Houston, former Chancellor who helped in the development of the Washington University Medical School and Dr. Quitman Newell, professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology in the School of Medicine. u.
