Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1959 volume:

Forward Progress is the traditional title of Washington's yearbook, and so far as we know, this title is unique with Washington. We are proud to posses this happy name. Progress in 1958 and 1959 has become a very important word, describing as it does the momentous change in our way of life brought about by the discoveries of the scientist, the mathematician, and the philosopher. Therefore, it is very fitting that, as our civilization stands on the new great frontier of the universe, we adopt Progress as the theme of our book as well as the name on the cover. Progress! 2 Dedicated To our Parents, whose love has been our inspiration, whose interest and encouragement have helped us to carry on when the going was difficult, and whose sacrifices have made our priceless opportunities in education possible—to you we respectfully dedicate The Progress of 1959. Board of T rustees MR. ARTHUR STEFFENSEN MR. HAROLD MARTHEDAL MR. BERNARD JENSEN There are five very important men on Washington Union High School's Board of Trustees. These men are important because they have the responsibility of hiring the principal, teachers, school employees, approving the school budget, authorizing the bills, discussing and adopting policies, maintaining good school conduct, authorizing the purchase of school equipment, and seeing that the school and its activities keep running smoothly. These men are Mr. Arthur Steffensen, President of the Board; Mr. Vernon Wynn, Vice President; Mr. William Hannickel, Clerk; Mr. Harold Marthedal, and Mr. Bernard Jensen. MR. VERNON WYNN MR. Among the many busy people at Washington who do their best to serve the school community are the bus drivers, the custodians, the Business Manager, and the secretaries. Handling supplies, doing clerical work, and answering correspond- ence for the administration are the jobs done by our school secretary, Mrs. Jewell. Mrs. Jensen, academic secretary, keeps records of all students and helps with correspondence regarding them. Mrs. Springston is the school bookkeeper; she helps Mr. MacDonald who is in charge of stu- dent body and school funds. Our custodians are responsible for the well kept appearance of our school buildings and grounds. Delivering students to and from school is the daily routine of the bus drivers. They also provide transportation away from home. BUS DRIVERS--FRONT ROW: J. Rush, A. Santopietro, A. Ventura, R. Ahlmeyer, J. Ferreira, D. Rinker. BACK ROW: J. Donabed. J. Machado, A. Hansen, H. We have a higher standard of living than ever before, better than any other nation, and each of us is charged with the responsibility of helping to keep our nation in the lead in every respect. It is up to all of us to take advantage of each opportunity as it arises. Many of you feel that you have had enough education at this phase of your life. I sincerely hope that if this is your decision, that you will give this considerably more thought before you let this become your final decision. We must prepare ourselves, both young and old, for the leadership if we are to keep abreast with the rest of the world. The leadership of tomorrow will be in the hands of those of your generation who have properly prepared themselves for it. Now that you are completing this phase of preparation for life, I wish to extend to each of you, best wishes for a bountiful life and success in your chosen field. HARRY GOWER Principal Senior Class The seniors have made great progress during their four years spent here at W.U.H.S. They came to Washington in 1955 and the sophomores had the time of their lives initiating them as freshmen. Later, when they in turn became sophomores, the greatest event in their year was the arrival of their Balboa blue class sweaters. Class rings were ordered during that year and arrived on the first part of their Junior year. The March of Dimes' talent show, in which they participated and placed first, plus the sponsoring of the Junior-Senior Prom were some of the other highlights of their third year. But good things don't last long, and we have to see the seniors leave. During the past year Bob Gardner was President; Steve Magnussen, Vice-President; Shirley Miguel, Secretary; Mary Ann Clay, Treasurer; and Bob Mayse, fall student council representative.
